Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A free black man in London wanders too close to the docks on the wrong day. A woman gives birth alone in a barn loft near an Australian outback crossroads. A mother removes her apron, walks away from her family, and tells her secrets only once. A woman in a California living room sobs as her husband informs the assembled adult children that the youngest is only half-brother to the rest. A mental health agent in Idaho struggles with addiction, bureaucracy, and an affection for one of her charges, a dark-haired transient from Australia. In Paula Marie Coomer's Jagged Edge of the Sky connections of blood and circumstance emerge from a kaleidoscopic narrative in which these and other characters navigate rugged personal terrains of loss and hope. The resulting literary landscape is spare and challenging as the Australian outback, mythical as the American West. With a relentless eye, Paula Marie Coomer flinches from neither the gruesome nor the humorous in this fractured tale of loners, siblings, parents, and lovers.

Book Ren Magritte and the Art of Thinking

Download or read book Ren Magritte and the Art of Thinking written by Lisa Lipinski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-04 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For René Magritte, painting was a form of thinking. Through paintings of ordinary objects rendered with illusionism, Magritte probed the limits of our perception—what we see and cannot see, the nature of representation—as a philosophical system for presenting ideas, and explored perspective as a method of visual argumentation. This book makes the claim that Magritte’s painting is about vision and the act of viewing, of perception itself, and the process of how we see and experience things in the world, including paintings as things.

My rare blood type sends vampires into temporary paralysis right before I have to finish the job by hand. Basically, I'm a glorified chew toy. This second edition retains O'Meara's detailed visual descriptions and sketches, accompanied by stunning new images taken by amateur photographer Mario Motta and observations by Magda Streicher. The astrophysical descriptions have been updated to account for the many advances in our understanding of the objects, not least due to an armada of space-borne observatories and the new technologies used in large ground-based telescopes. Ideal for observers who have completed the Messier objects and are looking for their next challenge, Deep-Sky Companions: The Caldwell Objects is a fitting tribute from a renowned visual observer to one of astronomy's most famous personalities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lights in the Sky: Are We Not Alone? features twelve extraordinary stories about UFO witnesses or abductees. Are we alone? This age-old question has been debated since the beginning of time. Thousands of UFO sightings are reported every year, in every country and every part of the world. Even more go unreported, and the number of encounters rise each year. There have been mass sightings by hundreds of people at once. Similar descriptions of beings and encounters have been documented by people thousands of miles apart. Research and scientific studies done by credible professionals have verified alien recordings on video and photographs. Stories and theories of visitations by superior beings have been documented and handed down through the generations, spanning back to the earliest recorded history. There are biblical references and ancient texts describing superior being visitations, as well as images of airborne objects and nonhuman creatures depicted in historical paintings and sculpture, dating back to the cavemen. Unexplained architecture and civilizations, far advanced for the time periods, are scattered throughout the world. Giant primitive symbols are carved in the Earth’s surface that can only be seen from the sky. With millions of galaxies, billions of stars, and infinite planets scattered throughout space, the odds that life exists elsewhere are high. Has planet Earth been visited by those not of this world?

Adventure and romance together in high-speed pursuit of Happily Ever Afters throughout the universe. If you’ve been looking for love in all the wrong galaxies, find your alien mate with the Intergalactic Dating Agency! ALPHA STAR She just wanted a quiet place to hide from the world. Instead, she found adventure with a sexy alien seeking his mate and a once-in-a-lifetime chance for a cosmic love… Recovering from a traumatic concussion, Zoe Nazario fears she’ll never trust her own senses again. So when she stumbles over a shiny chrome cube, she laughs off its chirpy announcement that she’s the lucky bride of an alien prince. Aliens? Love? Yeah, no. Better to be dazed and confused—and alone—than desperately delusional. Sinclarion “Sin” Fifth-Moon Jax feels most at home roaming the infinite stars with his cybernetic enhancements and princely privilege to protect his misfit spaceship crew. But his imperial great-grandmother, despairing of his free-flying ways, demands he settle down to claim his solar system inheritance—and the Big Sky Intergalactic Dating Agency has already identified his perfect match in Sunset Falls, Montana, Earth! Grudgingly resigned to seizing the woman of his destiny, Sin instead gets an innocent Earther girl—who rejects him utterly. But when he realizes an interstellar menace is stalking his reluctant bride, he can’t just leave her behind…even if his five mating rings threaten to lock with desire when she’s near. The small-town Earther girl and the arrogant alien prince must join forces to survive a vast and treacherous universe, but what happens when they find that Sin’s inheritance might be a lie—and so is his perfect match with Zoe? RED SHIFT Unmated drakling shifters are one of the hottest threats in the universe, as everyone knows…everyone except this one drakling with amnesia and the innocent Earther girl trapped with him! Banished from his homeworld for refusing a mate that would tame his fiery beast, Honey the drakling followed his wandering prince into battle and then—more terrifying yet—into courtship. But then espresso-induced amnesia leaves him marooned in the backwater wilds of Big Sky Country, Montana, Earth, lost and alone but for a female with hair as dark as the night skies and hidden sparks in her eyes. Tisha Beauchamp just wanted a weekend in her granny’s remote cabin with her girlfriends to figure out her life plan. No one said a thing about an early snowstorm or invading aliens! And now she’s stuck in the mountains by herself—until her one-woman pity party gets crashed by a wild, red-haired man with no memories, strange dragon-ish tattoos, and a scorching touch… Though he has forgotten his name, his beast, and the freedom of space, the feverish urge to claim Tisha grows stronger with every night under the pale light of Earth’s solitary moon. But if he finds his way back to his ship and himself, how can he burn forever with his bold, bright Earther girl? DARK MATTER While it is a verifiable reality that the universe is vast and strange, no one in all those lightyears could ever love an emotionless, soul-sucking space vampire. Unless there are deeper truths out there somewhere… The secretive, ancient species of the vrykoly were designed to pilot the deathly cold distances of space, and Ivan has never known anything else; even his dreams have always been black and empty. Though he guides the Sinner’s Prayer to a neglected little planet to find brides from the Intergalactic Dating Agency, Ivan dispassionately considers bonding and mating to be irrational pursuits. But when his captain and first officer find incandescent love with the extraordinary females of Earth, this vrykoly is forced to wonder if he was—dare he say it?—wrong. After the tragic death of her first love, Montana river guide Delaney Nazario thought she’d be alone forevermore. So she quietly signed up with the Big Sky matchmaking outpost in Sunset Falls, hoping an alien will whisk her away. Instead it was her two roommates who found their mates—also staving off an attack by interstellar mercenaries trying to kidnap Earth women. Now Del is being guarded by a silent, hulking, scary vrykoly—who might be the only being in the universe she could never, ever date. But while there are deeper truths in the universe, there is also secret menace. And Big Sky’s only hope is a space vampire who’s never felt anything and an Earther girl who feels too much. AFTER BURN When Vaughn Quaye’s older sister goes missing in Big Sky Country, she’s willing to risk everything to hunt down the only man who seems to know anything about the mysterious mail order bride agency that closed under suspicious circumstances. Except Vaughn is risking more than her life–she’s discovering a universe of danger and desire she never knew existed. Dejo Jinn, sole proprietor of Jinn Data Recovery, just wants to steal–no, sorry, not steal, recover–the data left behind at the abandoned Intergalactic Dating Agency when it was forced to close after mistakenly losing some brides. He has no interest in revealing his extraterrestrialness to a clueless if distractingly curvy Earther, but after they are attacked and she sees his green blood, his secret is outed. Now reluctant partners, he’ll have the chance to steal–sorry, recover–the valuable data and she’ll get her sister back. Assuming they don’t end up dead. • Author : Yuan Qu
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2017-07-18
  • ISBN : 0231544650
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book The Songs of Chu written by Yuan Qu and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sources show Qu Yuan (?340–278 BCE) was the first person in China to become famous for his poetry, so famous in fact that the Chinese celebrate his life with a national holiday called Poet's Day, or the Dragon Boat Festival. His work, which forms the core of the The Songs of Chu, the second oldest anthology of Chinese poetry, derives its imagery from shamanistic ritual. Its shaman hymns are among the most beautiful and mysterious liturgical works in the world. The religious milieu responsible for their imagery supplies the backdrop for his most famous work, Li sao, which translates shamanic longing for a spirit lover into the yearning for an ideal king that is central to the ancient philosophies of China. Qu Yuan was as important to the development of Chinese literature as Homer was to the development of Western literature. This translation attempts to replicate what the work might have meant to those for whom it was originally intended, rather than settle for what it was made to mean by those who inherited it. It accounts for the new view of the state of Chu that recent discoveries have inspired.

Book Spying from the Sky

Download or read book Spying from the Sky written by Robert L. Richardson and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “must read” story of America’s first high-altitude aviation program and one of its pilots (Francis Gary Powers Jr.). William “Greg” Gregory was born into a sharecropper’s life in the hills of North Central Tennessee. From the back of a mule-drawn plow, Greg learned the value of resilience and the importance of determined living. Refusing to accept a life of poverty, he found a way out: a work-study college program that made it possible for him to leave farming behind forever. While at college, Greg completed the Civilian Pilot Training Program and was subsequently accepted into the US Army’s pilot training program. Earning his wings in 1942, he became a P-38 combat pilot and served in North Africa during the summer of 1943—a critical time when the Luftwaffe was still a potent threat, and America had begun the march northward from the Mediterranean into Europe proper. Following the war, Greg served with a B-29 unit, then transitioned to the new, red-hot B-47 strategic bomber. In his frequent deployments, he was always assigned the same target in the Soviet Union: Joseph Stalin’s hometown of Tbilisi. While a B-47 pilot, Greg was selected to join America’s first high-altitude program, the Black Knights. Flying RB-57D aircraft, he and his team flew peripheral “ferret” missions around the Soviet Union and its satellites, collecting critical order-of-battle data desperately needed by the US Air Force at that time. When the program neared its design end—and following the Gary Powers shoot-down over the Soviet Union—Greg was assigned to command of the CIA’s U-2 unit at Edwards AFB. Over this five-year command, he and his team provided critical overflight intelligence during the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam buildup, and more. He also became one of the first pilots to fly U-2s off aircraft carriers in a demonstration project. Spying from the Sky is the in-depth biography of William Gregory, who attended the National War College, was assigned to the reconnaissance office at the Pentagon, and was named vice-commandant of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) before retiring from the force in 1972.
