Book Jacques Majorelle 1886 1962

Download or read book Jacques Majorelle 1886 1962 written by Félix Marcilhac and published by Norma. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: -The complete works of Jacques Majorelle, an orientalist painter of the 20th century -1050 works have been documented by Felix and Amelie Marcilhac -With paintings inspired by scenes from Sudan, Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire and Morocco, this book collects Majorelle's fascinating (and occasionally exoticising) depictions of north-west African life Jacques Majorelle (1886-1962) is an emblematic figure of Orientalism. The son of the cabinet-maker Louis Majorelle, he trained at the Ecole nationale des Beaux-arts appliques of Nancy then in Paris, at the Academie Julian. Majorelle traveled through Spain, Egypt and Italy, starting from 1908. In 1917 he moved to Morocco. There, he developed a singular chromatic language which gave him a place divested of all influences among his contemporaries. Landscapes, bazaar scenes, and portraits, he based his art around the city of Marrakech where he lived, as well as across the rest of Morocco. He gathered inspiration from his many trips to Sudan, Guinea and Cote d'Ivoire, amassing a considerable oeuvre of over 1,000 works in which light, colour and a certain viewpoint on exoticism played a decisive role.

Book The Architecture of Psychoanalysis

Download or read book The Architecture of Psychoanalysis written by Jane Rendell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thought-provoking book, Jane Rendell explores how architectural space registers in psychoanalysis. She investigates both the inherently spatial vocabulary of psychoanalysis and ideas around the physical 'setting' of the psychoanalytic encounter, with reference to Sigmund Freud, D.W. Winnicott and Andre Green. Building on the innovative writing methods employed in Art and Architecture and Site-Writing, she also addresses the concept of architecture as 'social condenser' a Russian constructivist notion that connects material space and community relations. Tracing this idea's progress from 1920s Moscow to 1950s Britain, Rendell shows how interior and exterior meet in both psychoanalysis and architectural practice. Illuminating a novel field of interdisciplinary enquiry, this book breathes fresh life into notions of social space."

Book Lessons from the Great Gardeners

Download or read book Lessons from the Great Gardeners written by Matthew Biggs and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like heirloom seeds and grafts from trees, advice from great gardeners handed down through the centuries has shaped the science and art of gardens across the globe. Spanning gardeners from fifteenth-century Japan to the contemporary United States, Lessons from the Great Gardeners profiles forty groundbreaking botanists, nurserymen, and tillers of earth, men and women whose passion, innovation, and green thumbs endure in the formal landscapes and vegetable patches of today. Entries for each gardening great highlight their iconic plants and garden designs, revealing both the gardeners’ own influences and the seeds—sometimes literal—that they sowed for gardens yet to sprout. From André Le Nôtre in seventeenth-century France, who drew on his training as an architect and hydraulic engineer to bring the topiary form to Vaux-le-Vicomte and Versailles, to the work of High Line and Lurie Garden designer Piet Oudolf, and Thomas Jefferson’s advice on creating protected garden microclimates for help growing early crops and tender fruit like figs (with peas, a Jefferson favorite), Lessons from the Great Gardeners is a resource as rich as the soil from which it springs. Featuring lush illustrations harvested from the archives of the Royal Horticultural Society, as well as sections on a dozen international gardens that showcase the lessons of the greats, this homage to the love of good, clean dirt is sure to inspire readers to get out in the sun and dig.
