Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My analysis of the plays aims to provide key insights about the theatrical potential of each play, and how it was externalised on the stage of the Swan. The introduction begins with an exposition of my approach and methods and an outline of the literary context of Jacobean and Caroline revenge tragedies and some of the problems in staging them for a present-day audience. Then it describes in detail the history and structure of early modern playhouses and of the Swan Theatre at Stratford-upon-Avon. A chapter on each of the six plays whose production is analysed at length follows. The key questions raised by all productions are how to deal with scenes or moments of horror, and, relatedly, of bizarre or macabre comedy; how to present female characters constructed according to different assumptions from those of a present-day audience, and, similarly, how to handle misogynistic discourse; whether or not to update the play through costume, setting, and topical parallels; and, more generally, how to use the stage of the Swan Theatre most effectively.

Book Jacobean Revenge Tragedy and the Politics of Virtue

Download or read book Jacobean Revenge Tragedy and the Politics of Virtue written by Eileen Jorge Allman and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Maid's Tragedy, The Second Maid's Tragedy, Valentinian, and The Duchess of Malfi appeared on the English stage at a time when disenchantment with King James and nostalgia for Queen Elizabeth cast doubt on the traditional analogy between maleness and authority. In their sensational portrayal of politics and sex, these revenge tragedies challenge the dogmas of patriarchalism and absolutism on which James based his rule." "Focusing initially on the first three plays, Eileen Allman examines the genre's resident tyrants, revengers, androgynous heroes, and virtuous heroines."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Themes and Conventions of Elizabethan Tragedy

Download or read book Themes and Conventions of Elizabethan Tragedy written by Bradbrook and published by Foundation Books. This book was released on 2016-08 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book formed the basis of the modern approach to Elizabethan poetic drama as a performing art, an approach pursued in subsequent volumes by Professor Bradbrook. Its influence has also extended to other fields; it has been studied by Grigori Kozintsev and Sergei Eisenstein for instance. Conventions of open stage, stylized plot and characters, and actors' traditions of presentation are realted to the special expectations which a rhetorical training produced in the listeners. The general discussion of tragic conventions is followed by individual studies of how these were used by Marlowe, Tourneur, Webster and Middleton. For this second edition, Professor Bradbrook has revised her material and written a new introduction. A new final chapter on performance and characterization describes the conventions of role-playing. Dramatists before and after Shakespeare are compared with him in their methods of showing a complex identity on stage. This chapter also considers the work of Marston, Chapman and Ford in relation to the themes and conventions studied in earlier chapters.

Book Reader in Tragedy

Download or read book Reader in Tragedy written by Marcus Nevitt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique anthology presents the important historical essays on tragedy, ranging from antiquity to the present, divided into historical periods and arranged chronologically. Across its span, it traces the development of theories and philosophies of tragedy, enabling readers to consider the ways in which different varieties of environmentalist, feminist, leftist and postcolonial thought have transformed the status of tragedy, and the idea of the tragic, for recent generations of artists, critics and thinkers. Students of literature and theatre will find this collection an invaluable and accessible guide to writing from Plato and Aristotle through to Freud, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and 21st century theorists. Ideas of tragedy and the tragic have been central to the understanding of culture for the past two millennia. Writers and thinkers from Plato through to Martha Nussbaum have analyzed the genre of tragedy to probe the most fundamental of questions about ethics, pleasure and responsibility in the world. Does tragedy demand that we enjoy witnessing the pain of others? Does it suggest that suffering is inevitable? Is human sexuality tragic? Is tragedy even possible in a world of rolling news on a digitally connected planet, where atrocity and trauma from around the globe are matters of daily information? In order to illustrate the different ways that writers have approached the answers to such questions, this Reader collects together a comprehensive selection of canonical writings on tragedy from antiquity to the present day arranged in six sections, each featuring an introduction providing concise and informed historical and theoretical frameworks for the texts.

Book Four Revenge Tragedies

Download or read book Four Revenge Tragedies written by Thomas Kyd and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis Bacon described revenge as a 'kind of wild justice'. Then as now, early modern playwrights and their theatre-going public were fascinated by the anarchic energies that a desire for retribution unleashes. Rather than rehearsing familiar conventions, each of these plays presents a unique social and cultural milieu where dark fantasies of revenge are variously played out. In Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy a grieving father seeks public justice for the murder of his son by envious princelings. When his attempts are thwarted he turns a court spectacle of murder into the 'real' thing. Blackly comic in its tone and style, The Revenger's Tragedy (anon.) presents vengeance as mimetic art, witty and cruel. Ford's 'Tis Pity She's a Whore represents an innovative re-working of the genre as a brother's love for his sister leads to his spectacular revenge on his rival, her husband, in a society in which brutal retaliation for perceived wrong is the norm. In Webster's The White Devil crimes of passion ignite revenge in the courts of the Italian city states. This student edition contains fully annotated, modernized texts of each play together with an introduction discussing the dramatic and poetic style of each play, focusing on its action and play of ideas.
