Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isaiah Berlin, in his "Tribute to a Friend", wrote about the historian Jacob L. Talmon (1916-1980): "No matter what his theoretical interests were, or the topics on which he was lecturing or writing, his deepest concern was with the Jewish people, its history, its religious, moral and social values, its place among the nations, its future in Israel and the diaspora." These words capture the essence of Talmon's political essays presented in Mission and Testimony. Talmon was chosen by an international committee of scholars as one of the twenty major historians of the twentieth century, declaring that "his historiography was a convincing apologia for human freedom." He owes his fame primarily to his magnum opus, the trilogy that began with The Origins of Totalitarian Democracy (1952), continued with Political Messianism (1960) and concluded with The Myth of the Nation and the Vision of Revolution (1981). This edited collection of Talmon's essays comprises the following: Part I, "The Nature of Jewish history", deals with the Jewish presence in history, the universal significance of Jewish history, and the impact of Jewish intellectuals. Part II, "From Anti-Semitism to the Holocaust", concerns the anti-Semitic climate of opinion that led to the Holocaust. Part III depicts the regional and global situation of the State of Israel. In Part IV, "Intellectual and Political Debates", Talmon confronts intellectuals and statesmen such as Arnold Toynbee and Menachem Begin. Part V, "Profiles in History", depicts the intellectual portraits of the historian Lewis Namier and the physicist and champion of human rights Andrei Sakharov.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching the Christian faith to children, young adults and those new to Christianity can be a daunting task. Many resources portray Jesus Christ as coming on the scene of an unfolding drama in the world, heroically reinvigorating those who believed in God, and showing us a whole new side of God. Other resources overlook the rich examples of God's work in the world in the Old Testament. Jacob's Testimony demonstrates with Scripture that salvation through Jesus Christ had been planned long before His birth and that very few of His teachings were new. An in depth examination of the Old Testament lays the groundwork for the salvation and eternal life that are now available through Jesus Christ and the power that can be ours through the Holy Spirit. An examination of the New Testament ties the theology of salvation and faith back to the Old Testament at every step of the way.Jacob's Testimony is a teaching resource for use by individuals, families, churches and small groups and has separate editions for children/youth and adults. Each chapter includes Scripture reading and discussion questions. The ideal use of Jacob's Testimony includes having a leader supervise the reader's progress through the resource. Readers will come to understand and appreciate what it means that God the Father is a “living God” and learn anew how popular accounts in the Old Testament were established by divine providence as the precursor to the advent of Jesus Christ. Leaders can purchase the separate Leader's Guide to enhance the reader's progress.

Book excerpt: This book is about how the enemy tried to steal the joy and life of my son; however, God said, He shall live and not die to declare the works of the Lord. This book speaks of the trials my family had to endure and overcome in order to allow God to have His way in Jacob's life. It is a book of strength and encouragement to allow parents not to give up on their children. In spite of the tricks of the enemy, I had to take a stand on the Word of God because I was not going to allow him to destroy my family and steal my son. God blessed me with Jacob and He has given me the blue print for his life. That blue print is the Word of God. I remember driving one day and God showed me Jacob standing in an empty field. He had several balloons in his hand and he released them in the air. He stood and watched the balloons go up into the air. Once they had reached a certain height the balloons burst and the pieces of the balloon came back down. God said that was Jacob's life. As I praise God for the victory the praises reach Him in heaven. When the praises go up the blessings come down. Through all that I have been through, I thank God for the victory. Jacob is a prince of the royal priesthood, and he is a boy after God's own heart. Children are blessings from God and it is our job to train them as God has trained us in the Word of God. Stay focused and know that with God all things are possible. When you look at Jacob you are looking at a miracle. If you ever want to know what a miracle is just look what the enemy tried to do and look at what God did in return. Look at how the enemy tried to take his life many times even before he was born. However, God knew he would rise above the situation and be placed at the right hand of God. He is a prince of the royal priesthood and a child after the heart of God. He is a blessed child and he is on course with God. He is in the hand of the Potter and I refuse to allow him to come out until God takes him out. When he does come out he will go forth in the ministry that God has already prepared for Him. He is a leader and he is able to gather others in the direction that he wants them to go into. Through Jacob's trials and tribulation God gave me freedom. "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" Matthew 11: 28-30. God allow me to freely release him and give him back to God. The weight and burden I had carried for years was released and now I am able to walk in the glory of the Lord. I love to see him smile, laugh, and be himself. God is doing new things in his life. Many times you see the glory but you do not know the story behind the glory. Jacob has a fighting spirit, however God is using it for his good. When the enemy tries to attack him, he knows how to fight through the Word of God. He was born to be a leader and to go against the odds. We must totally depend on God and know that His Word does not come back void. You have to get to a point that you are ready to take the enemy head on. It is not a time to cry and give up, but a time to defend and attack. Jacob has given us so much joy and I thank God for all that He has done and is going to do in his life. I give all the praises and honor to Him for molding and shaping Jacob in the image He desires for him.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A legal thriller that’s comparable to classics such as Scott Turow’s Presumed Innocent . . . tragic and shocking.”—Associated Press NOW AN EMMY-NOMINATED ORIGINAL STREAMING SERIES • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Entertainment Weekly • Boston Globe • Kansas City Star Andy Barber has been an assistant district attorney for two decades. He is respected. Admired in the courtroom. Happy at home with the loves of his life: his wife, Laurie, and their teenage son, Jacob. Then Andy’s quiet suburb is stunned by a shocking crime: a young boy stabbed to death in a leafy park. And an even greater shock: The accused is Andy’s own son—shy, awkward, mysterious Jacob. Andy believes in Jacob’s innocence. Any parent would. But the pressure mounts. Damning evidence. Doubt. A faltering marriage. The neighbors’ contempt. A murder trial that threatens to obliterate Andy’s family. It is the ultimate test for any parent: How far would you go to protect your child? It is a test of devotion. A test of how well a parent can know a child. For Andy Barber, a man with an iron will and a dark secret, it is a test of guilt and innocence in the deepest sense. How far would you go? Praise for Defending Jacob “A novel like this comes along maybe once a decade . . . a tour de force, a full-blooded legal thriller about a murder trial and the way it shatters a family. With its relentless suspense, its mesmerizing prose, and a shocking twist at the end, it’s every bit as good as Scott Turow’s great Presumed Innocent. But it’s also something more: an indelible domestic drama that calls to mind Ordinary People and We Need to Talk About Kevin. A spellbinding and unforgettable literary crime novel.”—Joseph Finder “Defending Jacob is smart, sophisticated, and suspenseful—capturing both the complexity and stunning fragility of family life.”—Lee Child “Powerful . . . leaves you gasping breathlessly at each shocking revelation.”—Lisa Gardner “Disturbing, complex, and gripping, Defending Jacob is impossible to put down. William Landay is a stunning talent.”—Carla Neggers “Riveting, suspenseful, and emotionally searing.”—Linwood Barclay
