Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A legal thriller that’s comparable to classics such as Scott Turow’s Presumed Innocent . . . tragic and shocking.”—Associated Press NOW AN EMMY-NOMINATED ORIGINAL STREAMING SERIES • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Entertainment Weekly • Boston Globe • Kansas City Star Andy Barber has been an assistant district attorney for two decades. He is respected. Admired in the courtroom. Happy at home with the loves of his life: his wife, Laurie, and their teenage son, Jacob. Then Andy’s quiet suburb is stunned by a shocking crime: a young boy stabbed to death in a leafy park. And an even greater shock: The accused is Andy’s own son—shy, awkward, mysterious Jacob. Andy believes in Jacob’s innocence. Any parent would. But the pressure mounts. Damning evidence. Doubt. A faltering marriage. The neighbors’ contempt. A murder trial that threatens to obliterate Andy’s family. It is the ultimate test for any parent: How far would you go to protect your child? It is a test of devotion. A test of how well a parent can know a child. For Andy Barber, a man with an iron will and a dark secret, it is a test of guilt and innocence in the deepest sense. How far would you go? Praise for Defending Jacob “A novel like this comes along maybe once a decade . . . a tour de force, a full-blooded legal thriller about a murder trial and the way it shatters a family. With its relentless suspense, its mesmerizing prose, and a shocking twist at the end, it’s every bit as good as Scott Turow’s great Presumed Innocent. But it’s also something more: an indelible domestic drama that calls to mind Ordinary People and We Need to Talk About Kevin. A spellbinding and unforgettable literary crime novel.”—Joseph Finder “Defending Jacob is smart, sophisticated, and suspenseful—capturing both the complexity and stunning fragility of family life.”—Lee Child “Powerful . . . leaves you gasping breathlessly at each shocking revelation.”—Lisa Gardner “Disturbing, complex, and gripping, Defending Jacob is impossible to put down. William Landay is a stunning talent.”—Carla Neggers “Riveting, suspenseful, and emotionally searing.”—Linwood Barclay

Download or read book The Story of Joseph and the Family of Jacob written by Ronald Wallace and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-01-31 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging exploration of the Joseph story by trusted Bible scholar Ronald Wallace offers a fresh look at Genesis 37-50 and its continuing relevance to life in our modern world. Wallace traces the life of Joseph through his enslavement and subsequent rise to power in Egypt to the place where he would save the nascent tribe of Israel from sure starvation. Throughout these fourteen powerful and important chapters in Genesis, Joseph grapples with jealousy, selfishness, integrity, and other issues that remain pertinent to all believers today. Designing his work with personal or group Bible study in mind, Wallace divides the scriptural text into small, easily digestible sections and provides short yet deeply insightful reflections on each part of the story. In scouring the narrative for its implicit meanings, Wallace uncovers many aspects of the Joseph story, including its ongoing relevance to the development of Old Testament scripture, its significant echoes in the New Testament, and its implications for today's church. Written and arranged to provoke discussion as it is read, Wallace's 'Story of Joseph and the Family of Jacob' is an ideal choice for all who seek substantive and fulfilling Bible study resources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the Bible and its account of God's action in the world give meaning to our lives and provide us with the foundation for our actions. In this bestselling textbook, Craig Bartholomew and Michael Goheen survey the grand narrative of the Bible, demonstrating how the biblical story forms the foundation of a Christian worldview. In considering the biblical story, the authors emphasize the unity of the whole, viewing the Bible as a drama in six acts: creation, sin, Israel, Christ, church, and new creation. Two overarching themes--covenant in the Old Testament and kingdom in the New Testament--tie the biblical story together. Throughout, the authors suggest, God is revealed through the story and calls us to participate in his drama. The third edition has been updated and revised throughout. Additional resources for students and professors are available through Textbook eSources. "I am delighted to see solid scholarship made easily accessible in this splendid fashion."--N. T. Wright, University of St. Andrews; former bishop of Durham

Book excerpt: This book traces the lives of the author and other African-American women she interviewed about their African-American fathers. The author states that the most powerful relationship an African-American woman will ever have with a male is the one she has or doesn't have with her father. Whether present or absent Houston-Little asserts: fathers impact their daughter's lives in ways that sometimes defy description. If young African-American girls grow up with a loving, involved father in her life, the young girl seems to do well and lead a balanced life. She doesn't appear to be haunted by serious emotional and physical illnesses. While on the other hand, when a young girl does not have any relationship with her father or one that she perceives is less than adequate, serious issues may arise. Often a relationship that is perceived as less than adequate is as devastating as not having a relationship with her father at all. If a young girl's relationship with her father is non-existent or less than adequate, it is at this point that the "drama" appears to begin. "Drama" refers to a series of actions, reactions that the young girl, adolescent, soon to be adult female initiates and responds to a result of her perception. Perceptions that lead to "drama" are that the young girl in question believes her father does not care/love her. She may also believe that she can't trust anyone, especially men. No matter how hard she tries, she may also believe she'll never be good enough in any tasks she undertakes. These different "scenes", frames of reference affect the young girl and all those with whom she interacts. It's almost as though the young girl has a script from which she takes her cues. Often no one with whom she interacts even has a

Book The Harriet Jacobs Family Papers

Download or read book The Harriet Jacobs Family Papers written by Jean Fagan Yellin and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 1052 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although millions of African American women were held in bondage over the 250 years that slavery was legal in the United States, Harriet Jacobs (1813-97) is the only one known to have left papers testifying to her life. Her autobiography, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, holds a central place in the canon of American literature as the most important slave narrative by an African American woman. Born in Edenton, North Carolina, Jacobs escaped from her owner in her mid-twenties and hid in the cramped attic crawlspace of her grandmother's house for seven years before making her way north as a fugitive slave. In Rochester, New York, she became an active abolitionist, working with all of the major abolitionists, feminists, and literary figures of her day, including Frederick Douglass, Lydia Maria Child, Amy Post, William Lloyd Garrison, Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Fanny Fern, William C. Nell, Charlotte Forten Grimke, and Nathan Parker Willis. Jean Fagan Yellin has devoted much of her professional life to illuminating the remarkable life of Harriet Jacobs. Over three decades of painstaking research, Yellin has discovered more than 900 primary source documents, approximately 300 of which are now collected in two volumes. These letters and papers written by, for, and about Jacobs and her activist brother and daughter provide for the thousands of readers of Incidents--from scholars to schoolchildren--access to the rich historical context of Jacobs's struggles against slavery, racism, and sexism beyond what she reveals in her pseudonymous narrative. Accompanied by a CD containing a searchable PDF file of the entire contents, this collection is a crucial launching point for future scholarship on Jacobs's life and times.

Book excerpt: Switching places with someone else has never been more fun than in this novel about following your dreams and finding your heart from the author of Meant to Be --perfect for readers of Emery Lord and Morgan Matson! Meet Sloane Emily Jacobs: a seriously stressed-out figure skater who choked during junior nationals. Now meet Sloane Devon Jacobs, a spunky ice hockey player who's been suspended from her team for too many aggressive hip checks. The two girls are on their way to skating camps in Montreal when a luggage mix-up causes them to meet. Pretty soon, the Sloanes realize that this is the opportunity they’ve been waiting for: the chance to escape their lives and switch places for the summer. But it didn't occur to Sloane E. that she might meet a hockey hottie; and Sloane D. never expected to run into a familiar (and very good-looking) face from home. It's not long before the Sloanes discover that convincing people you're someone else might be more difficult than being yourself. *** "A twist on the identity-swap that's both cozily familiar and fresh . . . . sweetly uplifting." --Publishers Weekly "Enjoyable." --Kirkus Reviews “Sweet and satisfying.” --Booklist “Super cute, super hilarious and a totally fun read. I’m a big fan of the “two people switch places and fool everyone around them” plot line (see: The Parent Trap), and Being Sloane Jacobs pulled it off awesomely.” –HelloGiggles.com
