Book excerpt: In December 2003 the painter Jack Vettriano, a coalminer’s son, met his parents off the train from Scotland on his way to collect an OBE. Over the last few years Vettriano has had a meteoric rise to fame – emerging from the unlikely background of the Scottish coalfields, unknown and untutored, he has become Scotland’s most successful and controversial contemporary artist. Appearing on posters and cards, mugs and umbrellas, prints of his work outsell Van Gogh, Dali and Monet and his paintings have been acquired by celebrities around the world. 'The Singing Butler', Britain's most reproduced painting, fetched a record £744,800 at auction in April 2004. Vettriano’s images have an often mysterious narrative and are a gateway to an alluring yet sinister world. Daylight scenes of heady optimism, painted against backdrops of beaches and racetracks, are counterbalanced by more disquieting canvases of complex night-time liaisons in bars and clubs, bedrooms and ballrooms. Both sexes are clearly styled – the men hard-edged and mysterious, the women seductive and enigmatic. Yet beneath the confident posturing, Vettriano recognizes our inherent human frailty, that there is no victor in the struggle between duplicity and desire. Men and women are ultimately trapped by the machinations of intense love and passion with little control over their destiny. 'Jack Vettriano' presents about thirty new images, as well as some recently surfaced works, plus the best of the paintings previously published in 'Lovers and Other Strangers' and 'Fallen Angels', also by Pavilion. In March 2004 Melvin Bragg’s The South Bank Show broadcast a programme dedicated to Jack entitled Jack Vettriano: The People’s Painter. Reissued in smaller user-friendly format.

An elegant accompanying essay by critic Anthony Quinn recounts Jack's early years and his emergence as a successful artist. Filled with mysterious men and curvy, seductive yet enigmatic women, Jack's paintings are tales without text, storyboards about love and lust, possession and longing, pursuit and conquest. Book Contemporary British Art

    Book Details:
  • Author : Grant Pooke
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2012-11-12
  • ISBN : 1135654832
  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book Contemporary British Art written by Grant Pooke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few decades have been among the most dynamic within recent British cultural history. Artists across all genres and media have developed and re-fashioned their practice against a radically changing social and cultural landscape – both national and global. This book takes a fresh look at some of the themes, ideas and directions which have informed British art since the later 1980s through to the first decade of the new millennium. In addition to discussing some iconic images and examples, it also looks more broadly at the contexts in which a new ‘post-conceptual’ generation of artists, those typically born since the late 1950s and 1960s have approached and developed aspects of their professional practice. Contemporary British Art is an ideal introduction to the field. To guide the reader, the book is organised around genres or related practices – painting; sculpture and installation; and film, video and performance. The first chapter explores aspects of the contemporary art market and some of the contexts within which art is made, supported and exhibited. The chapters that discuss various genres of art practice also mention books that may be useful to support further reading. Extensively illustrated with a wide range of work (both known, and less well-known) from artists such as Chris Ofili, Rachel Whiteread, Damien Hirst, Banksy, Anthony Gormley, Jack Vettriano, Sam Taylor-Wood, Steve McQueen and Tracey Emin, and many more.

Book The Upper Room

    Book Details:
  • Author : Chris Ofili
  • Publisher : Victoria Miro
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 72 pages

Download or read book The Upper Room written by Chris Ofili and published by Victoria Miro. This book was released on 2002 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Installation of 13 paintings of rhesus macaque monkeys in a large walnut-panelled room designed by architect David Adjaye. The room is approached through a dimly-lit corrridor, which is designed to give a sense of anticipation. Each painting depicts a monkey based around a different colour theme (grey, red, white etc.). The twelve smaller paintings show a monkey from the side and they are based on a 1957 Andy Warhol drawing. The larger monkey is depicted from the front. Each painting is individually spotlit in the otherwise darkened room. The room is designed to create an impressive and contemplative atmosphere. The paintings each rest on two round lumps of elephant dung, treated and coated in resin. There is also a lump of the dung on each painting. Strictly speaking, each work is mixed media, comprising paint, resin, glitter, mapping pins and elephant dung. The Upper Room as a whole is described by the Tate (which bought the piece in 2005) as an "installation". The Upper Room is a reference to the Biblical Last Supper of Jesus and his disciples, hence the thirteen paintings. Ofili states the work is not intended to be offensive, but rather to contrast the harmonious life of the monkeys with the travails of the human race.

Book excerpt: From the Orange Prize-nominated author of The Observations comes an absorbing, atmospheric exploration of one young woman’s friendship with a volatile artist and her place in the controversy that consumes him. Jane Harris’s Gillespie and I presents a strongly voiced female protagonist evocative of Moll Flanders and Becky Sharp, who offers a keen sensibility, deeply felt observations, and poignant remembrances of the world of a young artist in turn-of-the-century Glasgow in this fantastic work of historical fiction. London’s Sunday Times calls Gillespie and I “a literary novel where the storytelling is as skilful as the writing is fine.” Fans of The Piano Teacher and The Thirteenth Tale will find it irresistible and unforgettable.

Book A Book of Satyrs

Download or read book A Book of Satyrs written by Austin O. Spare and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-06-07 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A richly illustrated book of images. Some of Spare's techniques, particularly the use of sigils and the creation of an "alphabet of desire" were adopted, adapted and popularized by Peter J. Carroll in the work Liber Null & Psychonaut. Carroll and other writers such as Ray Sherwin are seen as key figures in the emergence of some of Spare's ideas and techniques as a part of a magical movement loosely referred to as chaos magic. Zos Kia Cultus is a term coined by Kenneth Grant, with different meanings for different people. One interpretation is that it is a form, style, or school of magic inspired by Spare. It focuses on one's individual universe and the influence of the magician's will on it. While the Zos Kia Cultus has very few adherents today, it is widely considered an important influence on the rise of chaos magic.

Book excerpt: "From 1967, up until his death, Eduardo Paolozzi was involved with the innovative British literary magazine Ambit, using its pages as a space for some of his most experimental and innovative creations, pushing at the boundary between text and image. Collages, visual essays and fragments from novels, drawing on pop culture images from newspapers, magazines and advertisements. Reprinted in their entirety for the first time, Paolozzi's works for Ambit tackle the war in Vietnam, the acceleration of Japanese technology, and the utopias of mass advertising. The Jet Age Compendium reproduces the Paolozzi pages from Ambit along with magazine covers, poems and advertisements that originally appeared alongside the artist's work. The book is housed in a day-glo pink sleeve that also contains an essay written by David Brittain which puts Paolozzi's work for the magazine into context"-- Publisher's website.
