Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of Imagination offers a multidisciplinary perspective on the contemporary relationship between politics and the imagination. What role does our capacity to form images play in politics? And can we define politics as a struggle for people’s imagination? As a result of the increasingly central place of the media in our lives, the political role of imagination has undergone a massive quantitative and a qualitative change. As such, there has been a revival of interest in the concept of imagination, as the intimate connections between our capacity to form images and politics becomes more and more evident. Bringing together scholars from different disciplines and theoretical outlooks, The Politics of Imagination examines how the power of imagination reverberates in the various ambits of social and political life: in law, history, art, gender, economy, religion and the natural sciences. And it will be of considerable interest to those with contemporary interests in philosophy, political philosophy, political science, legal theory, gender studies, sociology, nationalism, identity studies, cultural studies, and media studies.

Book Climatic Variability in Sixteenth Century Europe and Its Social Dimension

Download or read book Climatic Variability in Sixteenth Century Europe and Its Social Dimension written by Christian Pfister and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multidecadal cooling is known to have occurred in Europe in the final decades of the sixteenth-century. It is still open to debate as to what might have caused the underlying shifts in atmospheric circulation and how these changes affected societies. This book is the fruit of interdisciplinary cooperation among 37 scientists including climatologists, hydrologists, glaciologists, dendroclimatologists, and economic and cultural historians. The known documentary climatic evidence from six European countries is compared to results of tree-ring studies. Seasonal temperature and precipitation are estimated from this data and monthly mean surface pressure patterns in the European area are reconstructed for outstanding anomalies. Results are compared to fluctuations of Alpine glaciers and to changes in the frequency of severe floods and coastal storms. Moreover, the impact of climate change on grain prices and wine production is assessed. Finally, it is convincingly argued that witches at that time were burnt as scapegoats for climatic change.

Born Gerardo Gonzalez in 1930, he rose from humble beginnings in Camaguey Cuba to become Kid Gavilan, the Welterweight Champion of the World. During the early days of 1950s television, Gavilan became an instant sensation and TV's first superstar attraction. Easily recognizable in his classy white trunks and shoes, Kid Gavilan thrilled crowds around the world with his flashy style and trademark "Bolo Punch." Throughout his championship reign 1951-'54, the "Keed" was virtually unbeatable in the welterweight class. Gavilan fought the greatest boxers of his era including Sugar Ray Robinson, Ike Williams, Carmen Basilio, Beau Jack, Billy Graham, Carl "Bobo" Olson, Ralph "Tiger" Jones, Chuck Davey and others.During a time when organized crime controlled the fight game, Gavilan had the courage and character to remain true to his sport. At the height of his title reign, mob promoters like Frankie Carbo and Frankie "Blinky" Palermo robbed him of his crown and denied him the opportunity to regain the championship.Retiring to Cuba national hero, Gavilan was thrust into Castro revolution and virtually forgotten as a champion. Returning to the United States in 1968, his greatness was finally recognized when he was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame (1985) and the International Boxing Hall of Fame (1990).

Book Asdell s Patterns of Mammalian Reproduction

Download or read book Asdell s Patterns of Mammalian Reproduction written by Virginia Douglass Hayssen and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 1036 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the appearance of the second edition of Sydney A. Asdell's widely used Patterns of Mammalian Reproduction in 1964, the field of reproductive physiology has expanded dramatically. Accordingly, this revision adopts a different structure from previous editions, substituting empirical delineations for physiological interpretations. With the emphases now on a presentation of the published facts of mammalian reproduction, it provides a thorough compilation of what is known about the basic reproductive biology of each of the 4300 mammalian species. To gather information, the authors examined more than 20,000 publications, dating up to 1992. They used primary sources as much as possible, supplementing them with English translations of Russian, Finnish, Chinese, and Japanese journals. The data are presented in taxonomic order. Each familial account summarizes the pattern of reproduction for the family and provides lists of citations arranged by topic of the literature on the endocrinology, reproductive anatomy, and reproductive physiology of the family. Following each account is a tabular listing of species-specific data for neonatal mass and size, weaning mass and size, litter size, age at sexual maturity, estrous cycle length, gestation length, lactation length, number of litters per year, and seasonality of reproduction. For each of these reproductive variables, the range of data gleaned from the literature is given, together with the source of each value listed.Virginia Hayssen is Assistant Professor of Biology at Smith College. Ari Van Tienhoven is Professor of Animal Physiology, Emeritus, at Cornell University. Ans Van Tienhoven assisted in the compilation of data for the book.
