Download or read book Irish Identity and the Literary Revival written by George Watson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1979, Irish Identity and the Literary Revival, through the works of W.B. Yeats, James Joyce, J. M. Synge, and Sean O’Casey, documents the complex spectrum of political, social and other pressures that helped fashion modern Ireland. At least three sets of cultural assumptions coexisted in Ireland during the years between 1890 and 1930, -- English, Irish and Anglo-Irish, each united by a common language but divided by considerable tensions and strain. The question of Irish identity forms the central theme of the study, and illustrates how it was a major, even obsessive concern for these writers. Subsidiary and interwoven themes constantly recur. Themes such as the concepts of the peasant and the hero, political nationalism, the meaning of Ireland’s history and the validity of her cultural traditions. Rather than use the literature concerned as merely endorsing evidence for a sociological or political thesis, this study allows its major themes and issues to emerge and develop from direct and close study of the work of the writers. This book will be of interest to students of literature and history.

Download or read book A J M Synge Literary Companion written by Edward A. Kopper and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1988 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 'literary companion,' Kopper includes excellent chapters devoted to (1) brief biography and chronology, (2) Synge's prose, (3) each of his six plays, (4) poems, (5) use of Christian and pagan motifs, (6) use of Irish mythology, (7) literary influences on Synge, (8) Synge's relationship to the Irish Literary Renaissance, (9) Synge's language of women, (10) his use of language generally, and (11) an assessment of Synge's achievement. In addition, Kopper includes a superb select bibliography; a detailed list (with annotation) of characters, locales, and motifs; and stage histories of Synge's plays. . . . Strongly recommended all libraries--academic and public--maintaining 20th-century Anglo-Irish literature collections or general drama/theater collections. Choice This companion to Synge's work covers the important issues in Synge criticism from about 1900 to the present day. Each essay includes a bibliography, and a general bibliography follows. Also included are a brief chronology; a glossary of characters, locales, and motifs; and representative stage histories which also describe productions of Synge's plays in Ireland, the United States, and several other countries. The final essay is the editor's assessment of Synge's overall contribution, and the volume concludes with a general index. This work takes into account the prominence that Synge and other writers of the Irish Renaissance have attained in recent years in the worldwide academic community. The essays deal with Synge's use of language, his place in the Irish Renaissance, his reputation abroad, the forces that influenced his thought and writing, and the foreign productions of his plays. Each essay supplements the author's analysis with bibliographical citations and a synthesis of previous Synge criticism in order to allow for further research. By combining thorough coverage of the basic issues and sources of Synge criticism with fresh approaches provided by a group of distinguished scholars, Kopper has produced an important study of Synge and his milieu. It should prove valuable for college and university courses in modern literature and the Irish Renaissance, modern drama, and the theatre.

Download or read book Joe Frisco written by Ed Lowry and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography of vaudeville comedian Joe Frisco captures the world of show business in its transition from the heyday of vaudeville through film and radio to the early years of television. As Paul M. Levitt tells us, Joe Frisco in his day was so famous for his jazz dance that F. Scott Fitzgerald mentions him when describing one of Gatsby’s parties: "Suddenly one of these gypsies in trembling opal seizes a cocktail out of the air, dumps it down for courage and moving her hands like Frisco dances out alone on the canvas platform." Seeking to reintroduce this spontaneous and original wit to us, Levitt transforms the manuscript left by Frisco’s fellow entertainers Ed Lowry and Charlie Foy into a book as entertaining as the great comic himself. It follows Frisco’s career from his beginnings in Chicago on the midwestern circuit, through his New York heyday in vaudeville theatres and nightclubs, to his final years in Los Angeles when first film and then television came to dominate show business. Lowry and Foy, both vaudeville insiders, describe Frisco’s world, with its hotels, theatres, restaurants, clubs, racetracks, and, not least, its famous people—Flo Ziegfeld, W. C. Fields, Walter Winchell, George Jessel, Bing Crosby (who contributed the foreword to this book), even William Randolph Hearst. Ed Lowry bought a mail-order course at fourteen, taught himself to dance, and launched a half-century career in theatre. Charlie Foy, the second child in the family troupe known as "Eddie Foy and the Seven Little Foys," shared an apartment and the stage with Joe Frisco for several years.

Book excerpt: Although occasionally found in bits and pieces in anthologies and in some period dramatic comedies, vaudeville humor has never before been available in one collection--performers rarely if ever kept a record of their jokes and routines. Fortunately, Ed Lowry was an inveterate collector. He kept copious notebooks of jokes and routines that he not only commissioned but also stole from other comics, clipped from newspapers, and copied from now defunct popular magazines of the day.
