Book Restoring the Oceanic Island Ecosystem

Download or read book Restoring the Oceanic Island Ecosystem written by Isamu Okochi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loss of biodiversity on tropical and subtropical oceanic islands is one of the most pressing conservation issues. These oceanic islands are well known for their unique fauna and ? ora, which evolved over long periods in isolation from external perturbation. However, the maj- ity of these islands in the Paci? c were eventually settled by Polynesians and then by Europeans; by about 200 years ago, only a few island groups remained untouched. The Bonin Islands are one of these groups. The Bonin Island group is one of the most remote in the world. The islands are located 1,000 km south of Japan off the eastern fringe of Eurasia. They were ? rst discovered by the Japanese in 1670, settled by Westerners from Hawaii in 1830, and ? nally recognized as a Japanese territory in 1862 on condition that previous settlers would be protected and allowed to remain with full rights. Because of this complicated history, the Bonins have two names.

Book excerpt: The classic New York Times bestselling story of heroism and sacrifice--by the author of Flags of Our Fathers, The Imperial Cruise, and The China Mirage. This acclaimed bestseller brilliantly illuminates a hidden piece of World War II history as it tells the harrowing true story of nine American airmen shot down in the Pacific. One of them, George H. W. Bush, was miraculously rescued. What happened to the other eight remained a secret for almost 60 years. After the war, the American and Japanese governments conspired to cover up the shocking truth, and not even the families of the airmen were informed of what happened to their sons. Their fate remained a mystery--until now. FLYBOYS is a tale of courage and daring, of war and death, of men and hope. It will make you proud and it will break your heart.

Book Engaging the Other Japan and Its Alter Egos 1550 1850

Download or read book Engaging the Other Japan and Its Alter Egos 1550 1850 written by Ronald P. Toby and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Engaging the Other: “Japan and Its Alter-Egos”, 1550-1850 Ronald P. Toby examines new discourses of identity and difference in early modern Japan, a discourse catalyzed by the “Iberian irruption,” the appearance of Portuguese and other new, radical others in the sixteenth century. The encounter with peoples and countries unimagined in earlier discourse provoked an identity crisis, a paradigm shift from a view of the world as comprising only “three countries” (sangoku), i.e., Japan, China and India, to a world of “myriad countries” (bankoku) and peoples. In order to understand the new radical alterities, the Japanese were forced to establish new parameters of difference from familiar, proximate others, i.e., China, Korea and Ryukyu. Toby examines their articulation in literature, visual and performing arts, law, and customs.

  • Publisher : Otago University Press
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book Tsugaru written by Nanyan Guo and published by Otago University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tsugaru is located in the north-west corner of Japan's main island, Honshu. With a rugged landscape and challenging weather, it was bypassed by Japan's industrial development after World War Two. As a result, it is rich in culture and diversity, with people of many different dialects and traditions. This book serves both as an introduction and as a study on regional identity in the modern state. The interesting essays examine many aspects of Tsugaru life and culture: some history, the 'Ysugaru shamisen', the region's distinctive lacquerware, sculpture, literature ad the performing arts.
