Book excerpt: The International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) Satellite has been in continuous operation since January 26, 1978. To date, approximately 65,000 spectra have been stored in an archive at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. A number of procedures have been generated to facilitate access to the data in the IUE spectral archive. This document describes the procedures which include on-line quick look of the displays, search of an observation data base for selected observations, and several methods for ordering data from the archive. Book Cross Calibration of Far UV Spectra of Solar System Objects and the Heliosphere

Download or read book Cross Calibration of Far UV Spectra of Solar System Objects and the Heliosphere written by Eric Quémerais and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-21 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of a working group sponsored by ISSI in Bern, which was initially created to study possible ways to calibrate a Far Ultraviolet (FUV) instrument after launch. In most cases, ultraviolet instruments are well calibrated on the ground, but unfortunately, optics and detectors in the FUV are very sensitive to contaminants and it is very challenging to prevent contamination before and during the test and launch sequences of a space mission. Therefore, ground calibrations need to be confirmed after launch and it is necessary to keep track of the temporal evolution of the sensitivity of the instrument during the mission. The studies presented here cover various fields of FUV spectroscopy, including a catalog of stellar spectra, datasets of Moon Irradiance, observations of comets and measurements of the interplanetary background. Detailed modelling of the interplanetary background is presented as well. This work also includes comparisons of older datasets with current ones. This raises the question of the consistency of the existing datasets. Previous experiments have been calibrated independently and comparison of the datasets may lead to inconsistencies. The authors have tried to check that possibility in the datasets and when relevant suggest a correction factor for the corresponding data.

Book Haunted Data

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lisa Blackman
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2019-01-24
  • ISBN : 1350047066
  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book Haunted Data written by Lisa Blackman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haunted Data explores the concepts that are at work in our complex relationships with data. Our engagement with data – big or small – is never as simplistic or straightforward as might first appear. Indeed, Blackman argues that our relationship with data is haunted with errors, dead ends, ghostly figures, and misunderstandings that challenge core assumptions about the nature of thought, consciousness, mind, cognition, affect, communication, control and rationality, both human and non-human. Using contemporary controversies from 'weird science' including the field of priming and its uncanny relations to animal telepathy, as well as artificial intelligences and their curious relation to psychic research ('clairvoyant computers'), Blackman shows how some of the current crises in science in these areas reveal more than scientists are willing or even able to acknowledge. In addition to proposing a new theory of how we might engage with data, Haunted Data also provides a nuanced survey of the historical context to contemporary debates, going back to the 19th Century origins of modern computation and science to explain the ubiquity and oddness of our data relations. Drawing from radical philosophies of science, feminist science studies, queer theory, cultural studies, and the field of affect studies, the book develops a manifesto for how artists, philosophers and scientists might engage creatively and critically with science within the context of digital communication.

Book Stellar Spectral Classification

Download or read book Stellar Spectral Classification written by Richard O. Gray and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-29 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by leading experts in the field, Stellar Spectral Classification is the only book to comprehensively discuss both the foundations and most up-to-date techniques of MK and other spectral classification systems. Definitive and encyclopedic, the book introduces the astrophysics of spectroscopy, reviews the entire field of stellar astronomy, and shows how the well-tested methods of spectral classification are a powerful discovery tool for graduate students and researchers working in astronomy and astrophysics. The book begins with a historical survey, followed by chapters discussing the entire range of stellar phenomena, from brown dwarfs to supernovae. The authors account for advances in the field, including the addition of the L and T dwarf classes; the revision of the carbon star, Wolf-Rayet, and white dwarf classification schemes; and the application of neural nets to spectral classification. Copious figures illustrate the morphology of stellar spectra, and the book incorporates recent discoveries from earth-based and satellite data. Many examples of spectra are given in the red, ultraviolet, and infrared regions, as well as in the traditional blue-violet optical region, all of which are useful for researchers identifying stellar and galactic spectra. This essential reference includes a glossary, handy appendixes and tables, an index, and a Web-based resource of spectra. In addition to the authors, the contributors are Adam J. Burgasser, Margaret M. Hanson, J. Davy Kirkpatrick, and Nolan R. Walborn.

Book Analysis of the IRAS Low Resolution Spectra

Download or read book Analysis of the IRAS Low Resolution Spectra written by Irene Little-Marenin and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of the IRAS low resolution spectra show that the 8-22 micron spectral range show a variety of emission features. The strongest features in spectra of M stars are the 10 and 18 micron silicate emission features. In addition a three-component feature with peaks at 10, 11 and 13.1 micron and a weak, broad 9-15 micron feature is present in many M variable stars. Most carbon stars show the 11.2 micron SiC emission feature as well as, in some cases, an unidentified 8-9 micron emission feature. The MS, S and SC stars show a range of emission features whose peaks range from 10 to 11.2 micron. The excess emission above the underlying photospheric continuum in the 8-22 micron region for S Mira variables shows a sharp increase for period greater than about 370 days.

Download or read book The Magellanic Clouds written by Raymond Haynes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1991-02-28 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symposium 148 "The Magellanic Clouds and their Dynamical Interaction with the Milky Way" was the first IAU Symposium held in Australia since 1973. In all, 23 countries were represented by 149 participants. The Symposium was held from July 9 to 13, 1990 at Womens College, the University of Sydney. The last symposium on the Magellanic Clouds' was held in 1983 in Ttibingen, Germany. Since then new ground-and satellite-based instruments have become available. A range of results from these instruments were presented at IAU Symposium 148 and are published in these proceedings. IAU Symposium 148 was timed to coincide with the commissioning of the Australia Telescope, and indeed, a few of the first results from that instrument were presented at this Symposium Over the next decade the Australia Telescope is destined to make a major impact on Magellanic Cloud research. Papers are arranged in five main sections reflecting the Symposium timetable: • Large-Scale Structure and Kinematics • Star Formation and Clustering • Stellar Evolution • The Interstellar Medium • The LMC-SMC-Galaxy System These are preceeded by both the introduction to and the summary of the Symposium. Questions and answers from the oral sessions are reproduced at the end of each section.
