Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times–bestselling author’s classic novel of life and death drama inside a major American hospital—“easy to read and hard to stop reading” (Kirkus Reviews). Change is in the air when a new board chairman sets out to modernize and expand Three Counties Hospital in Burlington, Pennsylvania—a once venerable institution whose standards have slipped. Dynamic Dr. Kent O’Donnell, a Harvard Medical School–trained surgeon, accepts the board’s offer to lead and reform the rundown, disorganized hospital because he wants to make his mark on the world. As medical-board president, O’Donnell faces his greatest challenge in Dr. Joe Pearson, Three Counties’ elderly head pathologist. Once an excellent diagnostician, Pearson is now out of touch with the latest research and procedures in laboratory medicine. But if the hospital lets the imperious doctor go, it risks losing an important benefactor’s financial support. Arthur Hailey’s fascinating, dramatic, and scrupulously researched story reveals both the professional, personal, and romantic aspects of an administrator-surgeon’s life, as well as the tragedies and moments of joy that occur every day in a hospital—a place where life often begins and ends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infectious and non-infectious tubulointerstitial nephropathies are old subjects but there is enough confusion and disagreement on terminology and etiopathogenesis to warrant a new look at these problems. We were fortunate in having at the Pediatric Nephrology Seminar 6 and as contributors to this volume, the representative- or shall I say "originators"? - of each of the three most identifi able positions: Dr. Renee Habib - congenital anomalies, Dr. John Hodson - reflux, and Dr. Robert Heptinstall - infection. Although some tend to hold onto one position and exclude others, in this case there was overlapping of perception. Dr. Habib accepts a role for infection in reflux and for infection in the presence of obstruc tion; Dr. Hodson accepts infection and congenital anomalies as modi fiers; and Dr. Heptinstall takes an overall position whicm encompas ses the three. Thus the first part of the book emphasizes the complexity of something as seemingly simple as UTI and demonstrates awareness of disagreement even among the pros about meanings, interpretations, and treatment. Drs. Gustavo Gordillo, Jorge de la Cruz and their associates emphasize the importance of predisposing factors for UTI; Dr. Materson focuses on the workup of the patient, Dr. Zillerueloon bacteriological aspects, and Dr. Gorman on treatment approaches. Dr. Vaamonde reviews nephrotoxic agents. Finally, Drs. Andres and Noble review the immunological aspects of various tubulointer stitial nephritides.

Download or read book Pathology and Law written by Gregory Davis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-03 with total page 1200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost all pathologists face legal issues when dealing with the specimens they work with on a day-to-day basis, whether it involves quality control and assurance in handling the specimens, facing the possibility of malpractice suits, or serving as an expert witness in a trial. Written in an easy to read, conversational tone, with a dose of good humor, this book fills the need for a handbook that discusses the full spectrum of legal issues that many pathologists face, written from a pathologist's point of view. Organized in 12 user-friendly chapters, the book begins with a comparison of Law and Medicine and explains the basics of the American Legal System. It continues with discussions of the impact of law on the practice of pathology, including such topics as specimens with potential legal implications, the controversy of saving organs for teaching, procuring and saving specimens for toxicology testing and DNA confirmation in identity testing. A must-have section on malpractice suits covers reasons why patients sue, what to do if sued, and reducing the chance of being sued. The author addresses expert witness testimony, including how to be an expert witness, conflicts of interest, conduct in a courtroom, what to say and what not to say. Quality control and assurance as it applies to the pathologist is also discussed. Legal implications for the information age, including the use of internet and e-mail with regard to patient confidentiality is discussed in detail. Case samples are scattered throughout the text to illustrate the principles discussed. Every term is defined in the glossary.
