Book excerpt: A reckoning with one of our most beloved art forms, whose past and present are shaped by gender, racial, and class inequities—and a look inside the fight for its future Every day, in dance studios all across America, legions of little children line up at the barre to take ballet class. This time in the studio shapes their lives, instilling lessons about gender, power, bodies, and their place in the world both in and outside of dance. In Turning Pointe, journalist Chloe Angyal captures the intense love for ballet that so many dancers feel, while also grappling with its devastating shortcomings: the power imbalance of an art form performed mostly by women, but dominated by men; the impossible standards of beauty and thinness; and the racism that keeps so many people of color out of ballet. As the rigid traditions of ballet grow increasingly out of step with the modern world, a new generation of dancers is confronting these issues head on, in the studio and on stage. For ballet to survive the twenty-first century and forge a path into a more socially just future, this reckoning is essential.

But she has a secret. She wants to be a stand-up comedian, but she's pretty sure girls like her - big girls, girls who don't get all the boys, girls who a lot of people don't see - don't belong on stage. That hasn't stopped her dreaming though, and when the seemingly perfect opportunity to write routines for older, cooler, impossibly funny Leo arises . . . well, what's a girl to do? But is Leo quite an interested in helping Haylah as he says he is? Will Haylah ever find the courage to step into the spotlight herself? And when oh when will people stop telling her she's 'funny for a girl'?!

Download or read book Born and Made written by Sarah Franklin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2006-10-30 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are new reproductive and genetic technologies racing ahead of a society that is unable to establish limits to their use? Have the "new genetics" outpaced our ability to control their future applications? This book examines the case of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), the procedure used to prevent serious genetic disease by embryo selection, and the so-called "designer baby" method. Using detailed empirical evidence, the authors show that far from being a runaway technology, the regulation of PGD over the past fifteen years provides an example of precaution and restraint, as well as continual adaptation to changing social circumstances. Through interviews, media and policy analysis, and participant observation at two PGD centers in the United Kingdom, Born and Made provides an in-depth sociological examination of the competing moral obligations that define the experience of PGD. Among the many novel findings of this pathbreaking ethnography of reproductive biomedicine is the prominence of uncertainty and ambivalence among PGD patients and professionals--a finding characteristic of the emerging "biosociety," in which scientific progress is inherently paradoxical and contradictory. In contrast to much of the speculative futurology that defines this field, Born and Made provides a timely and revealing case study of the on-the-ground decision-making that shapes technological assistance to human heredity.

Beautiful and headstrong, Chloe, orphaned as a child, worked as a scullery maid for as long as she could remember. Raised by Madame, she hoped she would remain in her position indefinitely. Garret Bloodwyn, a bounty hunter by trade and vampire nobleman by birth, had little interest in anything other than collecting his next reward. When his father, Lord Bloodwyn, summons him to participate in the annual visit to the village of their namesake, Garret grudgingly accepts. When Chloe finds herself offered to the young vampire lord, she can't think of a worse circumstance. Yet, that fateful night changes the lives of not only the two young lovers but of everyone around them. As their passions run deep, along with tempers, their worlds are turned upside down. A whirlwind of desire, blood thirst, and testing the boundaries of the vampire/human relationships, the two face more challenges than any couple should. Will their bond be strong enough to bear all that falls before them or will the strain tear them apart?

'So much of its virtue has entered into its outward form that whatever may happen to it there is no change. From the beginning it was as it is now.''Then by God, sir, ' Reginald Montague exclaimed, 'you've got the transport of the world in your hands.'Neither of the two men made any answer. The Persian, sitting back in his chair, and Sir Giles, sitting forward on the edge of his, were both gazing at the thing which lay on the table. It was a circlet of old, tarnished, and twisted gold, in the centre of which was set a cubical stone measuring about half an inch every way, and having apparently engraved on it certain Hebrew letters. Sir Giles picked it up, rather cautiously, and concentrated his gaze on them. The motion awoke a doubt in Montague's mi
