On his return to America he was shocked to discover the general ignorance of things Italian in his own country, but was gratified to find a strong desire to hear the truth about them. Whenever he talked of Italy, he found interested and sympathetic listeners, who were amazed to learn what he had to disclose. As a result, he was asked to jot down the gist of these conversations, which he has been most willing to do in the hope that thereby he will reach a larger audience. As will be evident, no attempt at literary composition, or an historic essay on Italy's contribution to the war, has been attempted. It is more a connected recital of random conversations, relying upon the vivid impressions burned into his memory by the events narrated, and supplemented by reference to personal letters written at the time to his friends. While frankly and purposely pro-Italian, the writer has sternly resisted any temptation to exaggerate the truth as to facts and conditions, and hopes and believes that he has recorded a just and moderate estimate of Italy's attitude and accomplishments during the Great War. In the high valleys from Cordevole to the Padola the attack was pressed; the whole region of Ampezzo fell into Italian hands in July; and a strong foothold was obtained on the mountain ranges which descend from the Col di Lana towards Agai and Pieve di Livinallongo. This campaign in the north-eastern corner was typical of the warfare waged along the long ff'ontier of the Trentino wedge. The results may appear small when estimated in terms of mountain heights and little known mountain towns; but the rough ground, the serious obstacles prepared by the enemy, and the tenacious re sistance offered by the Austrians, who in this region were the pick of their mountain troops, made the achieve ment extraordinary. Through August the Italian pressure in these heights went on without slackening; in Sep tember the strong position of Mount Coston was taken; and through Octo ber and November, in the face of an intensifying severity of weather, some very strong positions on the Col di Lana, and the mountain ranges which stretch from the Sasso di Rezzodi to Ornolla, were conquered after a severe struggle. I have sought to emphasise a point of View that is general and increasing in Italy: that it is unworthy of great cities and a great nation to depend unduly on tourists who come to gape idly at noble monuments. But I hope that my neglect of paint and masonry may not be construed as ignorance of the fact that Italy has been the mother of the arts, the torch-bearer of civilisa tion throughout the dark ages, the creator and giver of all the colours and perfumes and joys still left for dreamers' souls. The point is that, during and after war, Italy must concern herself more particularly with sober, practical matters, such as trade and commerce and the enemy's confusion in every walk of life.
