Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italy and the Rise of a New School of Criticism in the 18th Century (With Special Reference to the Work of Pietro Calepio) The following essay belongs to and supplements a larger work on Italian Literary Criticism in the 17th and 18th centuries which will be published later when the researches into that criticism are finished. Material for this research, conducted under the direction and with the assistance of the Carnegie Trust, was collected in the academic year, 1919-20, in several libraries in Italy, notably the Biblioteca Nazionale and the University Library of Naples, thd Biblioteca Civica of Bergamo, the Biblioteche Marucelbnna, Laurenzcana and Magleabecehiana of Florence, and the Biblioteca Vittorio Emmanuele of Rome; some detail was also culled from the British Museum. Apart from those libraries I enjoyed the privilege of consulting the private collection of Benedetto Croce, and may state that the general principles and methods illustrated in the investigation owe largely their origin to his suggestion and encouragement. Book The Autobiography of Giambattista Vico

Download or read book The Autobiography of Giambattista Vico written by Giambattista Vico and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Autobiography of Giambattista Vico is significant both as a source of insight into the influences on the eighteenth-century philosopher's intellectual development and as one of the earliest and most sophisticated examples of philosophical autobiography. Referring to himself in the third person, Vico records the course of his life and the influence that various thinkers had on the development of concepts central to his mature work. Beyond its relevance to the development of the New Science, the Autobiography is also of interest for the light it sheds on Italian culture in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.Still regarded by many as the best English-language translation of this classic work, the Cornell edition was widely lauded when first published in 1944. Wrote the Saturday Review of Literature: "Here was something new in the art of self-revelation. Vico wrote of his childhood, the psychological influences to which he was subjected, the social conditions under which he grew up and received an education and evolved his own way of thinking. It was so outstanding a piece of work that it was held up as a model, which it still is."

Book Italy and the English Romantics

Download or read book Italy and the English Romantics written by C. P Brand and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-09 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fashionable and well-informed interest in Italy was a feature of English intellectual life in the first half of the 19th century. Most cultured people could read Italian and knew something of Italian literature. Young ladies learned to sing in Italian, whilst young gentlemen completed their education with a tour in Italy. Painters went there to make copies from Raphael; architects to sketch the Graeco-Roman ruins. Men of letters in particular found themselves drawn to Italy and much Romantic literature reflects this interest; many works owe their origin to Italian literature. In this book, which was originally published in 1957, Dr Brand traces the growth and decline of the social fashion which made Italy the goal of so many cultured Englishmen. He examines in particular the extent and significance of Italy's fascination for the English romantic writers, and traces the effects of the fashion in music, painting, architecture and political affairs.

The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.
