Book Wit and Wisdom of the Italian Renaissance

Download or read book Wit and Wisdom of the Italian Renaissance written by Charles Speroni and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-03-25 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first ample collection of facetiae, or witty tales, from the Italian Renaissance to be published in English. Witty and wise anecdotes had been known to the ancient Greeks and Romans in the form of apothegms, but not until the Renaissance did the true facetia acquire an independent life and popularity, and begin to spread rapidly throughout Italy and beyond the Alps. The publication of Poggio Bracciolini's Liberfacetiarum was largely responsible for this vogue: his collection met with tremendous success and resulted in the assembly of numerous other collection of facetiae. The facetia, which has some affinities with the longer, more carefully elaborated novella, is a brief narrative, varying in length from a few lines to two or three pages, whose main purpose it to entertain an excite laughter, and often concludes with a piece of pungent repartee. Both the facetia and the novella have often been censured for licentiousness, but most of them have a healthy moral, or at least a shrewd bit of psychology to impart. Above all, the facetia, like the novella, adds a new dimension to the overall, complex picture of the Renaissance. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Book Dante s Comedy and the Ethics of Invective in Medieval Italy

Download or read book Dante s Comedy and the Ethics of Invective in Medieval Italy written by Nicolino Applauso and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dante's Comedy and the Ethics of Invective in Medieval Italy proposes a new approach to invective and comic poetry in Italy during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and opens the way for an innovative understanding of Dante’s masterpiece. The Middle Ages in Italy offer a wealth of vernacular poetic invectives—polemical verses aimed at blaming specific wrongdoings of an individual, group, city or institution— that are both understudied and rarely juxtaposed. No study has yet provided a scholarly examination of the connection between this medieval invective tradition, and its elements of humor, derision, and reprehension in Dante’s Comedy. This book argues that these comic texts are rooted in and actively engaged with the social, political, and religious conflicts of their time. Political invective has a dynamic ethical orientation that is mediated by a humor that disarms excessive hostility against its individual targets, providing an opening for dialogue. While exploring medieval comic poems by Rustico Filippi (from Florence), Cecco Angiolieri (from Siena), and Folgore da San Gimignano, this study unveils new biographical data about these poets retrieved from Italian state archives (most of these data are published here in English for the very first time), and ultimately shows what the medieval invective tradition can add to our understanding of Dante’s Comedy.

Book New Italian Joke Book

Download or read book New Italian Joke Book written by Irv Ott and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-05-21 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asked by a group of Middle Easterners why they were a target of good-natured jokes, a popular Hispanic comedian recently said, “Because it's your turn.” The hypersensitive political-correct crowd would have us believe that there is currently some kind of unprecedented assault on immigrants and immigration. But ours is a country of newcomers, none of whom were welcomed with open arms. The Irish, Jewish and Italians, for instance, were not cosseted as they might be today. They were subjected to mockery as well as employment and housing discrimination. Thankfully, none were so brittle, nor their accomplishments so superficial or their pride so hollow that a cartoon or joke could take it all away. This historic reprint of a 1909 joke book is not remarkable for its wit but as evidence of the bias that plagued nearly all ethnicities in this country. Contained here within are mostly standard jokes of the day with an exaggerated Italian accent added; occasional use of the “D” word is unfortunate but a reality of the time. None of the jokes are spiteful. Handier than the free PDFs on the web, this you can hold, bookmark, highlight and shelve. An inexpensive imperative for any history buff or comedy aficionado.
