Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Italian Navy in the World War 1915-1918: Facts and Figures When the European war broke out in August, 1914, the Italian Navy had in course of completion a programme which was com mensur'ate with the financial resources of the nation and framed within the limits of a policy that was devoid Of. Any aggressive or imperialistic character. The/ realisation of this programme would have enabled the italian fleet to maintain the proportions of to 1 with that Of France, and 4 to 3 with that of Austria. The outbreak of the conflict, however, arousing new and dangerous eventualities, caused a change in this programme in the quantitative sense; while, on the other hand, the revolution which was taking place in the methods Of naval warfare - a revolution which started practically at the beginning of hostilities and totally destroyed a whole body of naval traditions; necessarily had the effect Of modifying in the qualitative Sense the plans which would have enabled Italy to defend herself and take the offensive at sea. The losses which the British Navy suffered in the earliest days Of the-war from the work Of the German submarines the increasingly effective assistance of aircraft as a means of scouting and for bombing fortified places and ships; the daily growing employment of mines whether as a protection for ports and whole tracts of sea, or for laying insidious zones Of danger-all necessary to Observe the greatest caution i squadrons for Offensive operations. Book Britain and Italy in the Era of the Great War

Download or read book Britain and Italy in the Era of the Great War written by Stefano Marcuzzi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an important reassessment of British and Italian grand strategies during the First World War. Stefano Marcuzzi sheds new light on a hitherto overlooked but central aspect of Britain and Italy's war experiences: the uneasy and only partial overlap between Britain's strategy for imperial defence and Italy's ambition for imperial expansion. Taking Anglo-Italian bilateral relations as a special lens through which to understand the workings of the Entente in World War I, he reveals how the ups-and-downs of that relationship influenced and shaped Allied grand strategy. Marcuzzi considers three main issues – war aims, war strategy and peace-making – and examines how, under the pressure of divergent interests and wartime events, the Anglo-Italian 'traditional friendship' turned increasingly into competition by the end of the war, casting a shadow on Anglo-Italian relations both at the Peace Conference and in the interwar period.

Book Naval History of World War I

Download or read book Naval History of World War I written by Paul G Halpern and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2012-04-15 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been a number of studies published on the activities of British and German navies during World War I, but little on naval action in other arenas. This book offers for the first time a balanced history of the naval war as a whole, viewed from the perspective of all participants in all major theaters. The author's earlier examination The Naval War in the Mediterranean, 1914-1918, centered on submarine activities and allied efforts to counteract this new menace. With this welcome sequel he again takes the reader beyond those World War I operations staged on the North Sea. Halpern's clear and authoritative voice lends a cohesiveness to this encompassing view of the Italians and Austrians in the Adriatic; the Russians, Germans, and Turks in the Baltic and Black Seas; and French and British in the Mediterranean. Important riverine engagements--notably on the Danube--also are included, along with major colonial campaigns such as Mesopotamia and the Dardanelles. The role of neutral sea powers, such as the Swedes in the Baltic and the Dutch in the East Indies, is examined from the perspective of how their neutrality affected naval activity. Also discussed is the part played by the U.S. Navy and the often overlooked, but far from negligible, role of the Japanese navy. The latter is viewed in the context of the opening months of the war and in the Mediterranean during the height of the submarine crisis of 1917.

  • Pages : 466 pages

Download or read book The White War written by Mark Thompson and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1915, Italy declared war on the Habsburg Empire. Nearly 750,000 Italian troops were killed in savage, hopeless fighting on the stony hills north of Trieste and in the snows of the Dolomites. To maintain discipline, General Luigi Cadorna restored the Roman practice of decimation, executing random members of units that retreated or rebelled. With elegance and pathos, historian Mark Thompson relates the saga of the Italian front, the nationalist frenzy and political intrigues that preceded the conflict, and the towering personalities of the statesmen, generals, and writers drawn into the heart of the chaos. A work of epic scale, The White War does full justice to the brutal and heart-wrenching war that inspired Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms.
