Book The Book Trade in the Italian Renaissance

Download or read book The Book Trade in the Italian Renaissance written by Angela Nuovo and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work offers the first English-language survey of the book industry in Renaissance Italy. Whereas traditional accounts of the book in the Renaissance celebrate authors and literary achievement, this study examines the nuts and bolts of a rapidly expanding trade that built on existing economic practices while developing new mechanisms in response to political and religious realities. Approaching the book trade from the perspective of its publishers and booksellers, this archive-based account ranges across family ambitions and warehouse fires to publishers' petitions and convivial bookshop conversation. In the process it constructs a nuanced picture of trading networks, production, and the distribution and sale of printed books, a profitable but capricious commodity. Originally published in Italian as Il commercio librario nell’Italia del Rinascimento (Milan: Franco Angeli, 1998; second, revised ed., 2003), this present English translation has not only been updated but has also been deeply revised and augmented.

Book Italian Confraternities in the Sixteenth Century

Download or read book Italian Confraternities in the Sixteenth Century written by Christopher F. Black and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-08-28 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confraternities were - and are - religious brotherhoods for lay people to promote their religious life in common. Though designed to prepare for the afterlife, they were fully involved in the social, political and cultural life of the community and could affect all men and women, as members or as the recipients of charity. Confraternities organised a great range of devotional, cultural and indeed artistic activities in addition to other functions such as the provision of dowries and the escort of condemned men to the scaffold. Other works have studied the local activities of specific confraternities, but this is the first to attempt a broad survey of such organisations across the breadth of early modern Italy. Christopher Black demonstrates clearly the extent, diversity and influence of confraternal behaviour, and shows how such brotherhoods adapted to the religious and social crises of the sixteenth century - thus illuminating current debates about Catholic Reform, the Counter-Reformation, poverty, philanthropy and social control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'In a subject of this magnitude, the author's coverage is impeccable ... Patronage in Renaissance Italy is an absolute must.' - The Art Book A perfect read for art historians and their students and for lovers of Renaissance art and civilization. In this first comprehensive study of patrons in the Italian quattrocento, Mary Hollingsworth shows how the patron - rather than the artist - carefully controlled both subject and medium in artistic creation. In a competitive and violent age, she explains, image and ostentation were essential statements of the patron's power. As a result, perceived cost became more important than artistic quality (and buildings, bronze, or tapestry were considered more eloquent statements than cheaper marble or fresco). Since Christian teaching frowned on wealth and power, money also had to be spent on religious endowments made in expiation. But here too the patron was in control, and used the arts and other means to express religious belief, not aesthetic sensibility. Artists in the early Renaissance were employed as craftsmen, Hollingsworth concludes, and only late in the century did their relations with patrons start to adopt a pattern we might recognize today. Praise for Mary Hollingsworth: 'Many readers, specialists and non-specialists alike, will welcome this book as a reliable and straightforward introduction to an important and interesting subject' - Literary Review 'She writes authoritatively, drawing on a vast store of knowledge' - Frances Spalding, The Sunday Times 'A thorough, readable and skilfully crafted survey' - Burlington Magazine 'This book will be of interest to anyone who looks at art in fifteenth-century Italy [and] will be particularly salutary for anyone who teaches or studies art history.' - Apollo Mary Hollingsworth is an academic and an expert in Renaissance art and architecture. Her published works include The Medici, The Borgias, and The Cardinal's Hat.

Iain Fenlon and James Haar have analysed this vast repertoire as it is found in manuscript and print offer information concerning the date and provenance of many fundamental sources together with a view of the subject which differs radically from previous treatments. Their study is divided into two parts. The first covers the rise and early cultivation of the madrigal, chiefly in Florence and Rome. The second contains a detailed descriptive inventory of all known manuscripts and printed editions, finishing with lists of contents and concordances in each case. This important study will serve those with an interest in Renaissance music and the changing cultural ambience of early sixteenth-century Florence and Rome.
