Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Mase Winslow travels back in time to post–Civil War South Carolina, he leaves behind his friend, Zoey Antonelli, to deal with the harsh realities of modern-day New York City alone. What he doesn’t know is that he’s also leaving her with the constant reminder of a hidden love she harbors for him. Rather than fading, her feelings continue to grow over the next ten years, gradually pushing her toward an emotional cliff that could destroy her. As she struggles with the regret of not professing her love while he was present, she turns to a journal Mase left her. From its pages she attempts to piece together an implausible life that would reunite the present with the past. It is only when the power of the memory stones comes into play that such an impossibility becomes reality. Using the stones, and with love as her only objective, she sets off on a journey that will not only redefine what true love really is but also highlight the difficulties we must sometime endure to achieve it.

Book The Unfinished Dollhouse

Download or read book The Unfinished Dollhouse written by Michelle Alfano and published by Cormorant Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No mother is prepared for the moment when a child comes out to her as a person whose physical gender is out-of-keeping with his emotional and psychological gender-identity. In Michelle Alfano's intimate memoir, she recounts her experience as the mother of a transgender child. The central metaphor of The Unfinished Dollhouse tells the story: on Frankie's fourth birthday, her parents Michelle and Rob purchased a kit to create a beautiful dollhouse. Michelle imagined building the home, buying the tiny pieces of furniture and accessories to fill it and, more importantly, the times she and her daughter would spend constructing the perfect dollhouse - a fantasy of domestic and familial happiness. Frankie expressed no interest in such typically girlish pursuits because Frankie harboured a secret - a secret about gender. In the years to follow, Frankie's parents experienced an education in parenting a child transitioning from female to male - which pronouns to use, how to disclose the information to friends, family, school and how to deal with the reactions of all - some heartening, some surprising, some disappointing. There is no memoir like The Unfinished Dollhouse in the Canadian cultural landscape, a memoir by the mother of a transgender child.

Book The Hallowed Eve

  • Author : Jack Santino
  • Publisher : University Press of Kentucky
  • Release : 2021-10-21
  • ISBN : 0813184584
  • Pages : 214 pages

Download or read book The Hallowed Eve written by Jack Santino and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Northern Ireland, Halloween is such a major celebration that it is often called the Irish Christmas. A day of family reunions, meals, and fun, Halloween brings people of all ages together with rhyming, storytelling, family fireworks, and community bonfires. Perhaps most important, it has become a day that transcends the social conflict found in this often troubled nation. Through the extensive use of interviews, The Hallowed Eve offers a fascinating look at the various customs, both past and present, that mark the celebration of the holiday. Looking through the lenses of gender, ethnicity, and religious affiliation, Jack Santino examines how the traditions exist in a nonthreatening, celebratory way to provide a model of how life could be in Northern Ireland. Halloween, concludes Santino, is a marriage of death and life, a joining of cultural opposites: indoor and outdoor, domesticity and wildness, male and female, old and young. Although current folk and popular traditions can be divisive, Halloween in Northern Ireland is universally considered to belong to everyone, regardless of their background or political leanings. The holiday is a dramatic example of how a community comes together one day a year, and these Northern Irish traditions capture the fundamental and everyday dimensions of life in Ulster.

Book Growing up in the Rockies

Download or read book Growing up in the Rockies written by Janice N. Richards and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-07-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My heart drifts back to the Rocky Mountains as I sit and look out the window. I see the snow that once brought such joy to my heart. I remember the days when I would have been known as a snow bunny. I think of my poor mother and how difficult it was for her to keep me indoors, for I was a mountain girl. I climbed the mountains. I chased the animals. I found all of Gods creatures beautiful. I was my fathers child. He roamed the wilderness and I learned from him. I loved to live life and I was very, very happy. It makes me very sad when I think of children who have not experienced such happiness, for I was one of the lucky ones. That is why I wish to share my life with you. I hope that in this day and age of single parents that maybe someone who reads this can get hope from the true meaning of family. I had a family that surrounded me with love and I never understood the meaning of poverty even though we were very poor. I always felt like our life was normal and that was how the whole world was. It would not be till my adult years that I would find this not to be true, and to experience the pain of a life that I had never known. It is hard for me to know where to begin as I remember back on the life that I loved and miss so much. However I wish to share the memories that made me who I am today.
