Book excerpt: Hey, you. Are you debating whether to destroy something with your bare hands or curl up on the couch for a decade or two? This book will solve all of your problems. (Sheesh, that's aiming a bit high.) This book is a cup of hot coffee, a ginormous bar of chocolate, or the magical fairy that comes over and does your dishes while you lie in the fetal position clutching a fluffy pillow. Sometimes when life falls apart the only acceptable response is hysterical laughter. When things get so far gone, so spectacularly a world away from any plans you made or dreams you dreamed, you feel it bubbling up inside of you and you scream, "It's not fair!" And it isn't. Fair is an illusion, and life is weird. This book will help you laugh at life's absurd backhands. This book is an empathetic groan of our collective unfairnesses. You might want to throw it across the room, and you might want to hug it like your new best friend. This book is about us sitting down together in our shared mess, taking a deep breath, gripping hands, looking the hard stuff in its beady little eyeballs, and bahahahaaing at it. Life's not fair, but we can learn to love this life we didn't choose.

Book excerpt: An abusive childhood has forged Nathan Kirkland into the man he has become-a hard-working, strong-minded, self-made millionaire. Add to that his extraordinary good looks, and he appears to have it all. There's just one problem: to blunt the pain of his past, Nathan has walled himself into isolation, both emotional and physical. Social interactions unnerve this intentional loner, and Nathan is convinced that the only way to avoid hurt is to be the one doing the hurting. While many around him fall for his chameleon-like personalities, there are some who know the destruction of which Nathan is capable and are determined to bring it to light. Threatened, Nathan becomes merciless in his quest for revenge and frantic in his struggle to maintain the facade of his life. But when confronted with an unattainable woman, Nathan can no longer hide behind his pretense of perfection, and his long-sequestered vulnerability unfolds. His all-too-flawless world turns upside down, opening emotions Nathan thought he'd buried long ago and leading to chilling consequences. The Loner is a tightly woven tale of a man who is not what he seems to be and a fascinating probe into the psyche of a person who discovers the inevitable price of fleeing the past.

Book excerpt: “[T]hemes of motherhood, love, and addiction collide in heartbreaking and dangerous ways” in this provocative and fascinating debut novel (Publishers Weekly). After twenty years of addiction to cloud, a drug which wipes the user’s short-term memory, Mellie’s mind is a messy collection of fragments. Now a single mother, she has decided to get clean with the help of a tough-minded sponsor. She desperately clings to her fragile sobriety, but on the evening of her twenty-ninth day sober, a stranger pulls into Mellie’s driveway—and her heart surges. To protect her new life and her two-year-old daughter, Mellie must now piece together the shards of her traumatic past. Shifting between 1988 and 2010, Melanie Conroy-Goldman’s debut novel is “bizarre and beautiful, equal parts brainy lit and gut-bucket pulp” (Mary Gaitskill, author of Bad Behavior).

Book Low Income Students Human Development and Higher Education in South Africa

Download or read book Low Income Students Human Development and Higher Education in South Africa written by Melanie Walker and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2022-07-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores learning outcomes for low-income rural and township youth at five South African universities. The book is framed as a contribution to southern and Africa-centred scholarship, adapting Amartya Sen's capability approach and a framework of key concepts: capabilities, functionings, context, conversion factors, poverty and agency to investigate opportunities and obstacles to achieved student outcomes. This approach allows a reimagining of 'inclusive learning outcomes' to encompass the multi-dimensional value of a university education and a plurality of valued cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes for students from low-income backgrounds whose experiences are strongly shaped by hardship. Based on capability theorising and student voices, the book proposes for policy and practice a set of contextual higher education capability domains and corresponding functionings orientated to more justice and more equality for each person to have the opportunities to be and to do what they have reason to value. The book concludes that sufficient material resources are necessary to get into university and flourish while there; the benefits of a university education should be rich and multi-dimensional so that they can result in functionings in all areas of life as well as work and future study; the inequalities and exclusion of the labour market and pathways to further study must be addressed by wider economic and social policies for 'inclusive learning outcomes' to be meaningful; and that universities ought to be doing more to enable black working-class students to participate and succeed. Low-Income Students, Human Development and Higher Education in South Africa makes an original contribution to capabilitarian scholarship: conceptually in theorising a South-based multi-dimensional student well-being higher education matrix and a rich reconceptualisation of learning outcomes, as well as empirically by conducting rigorous, longitudinal in-depth mixed-methods research on students' lives and experiences in higher education in South Africa. The audience for the book includes higher education researchers, international capabilitarian scholars, practitioners and policy-makers.

Book excerpt: AT THE CROSSROAD the decisions we take at every crossroad in our lives shape our destiny. Egypt, after the Second World War, was torn between the East and West. Occupied by the British and ruled by a corrupt King, it was inevitable that by 1952 the country would be convulsed by a military revolution. We follow four young people born during the occupation and learn how their lives and loves intertwine with the political events of their country. Nadia lives a western lifestyle, but suffers the intellectual and physical repressions imposed upon her by a conservative Moslem father. Melanie, whose mother is British, enjoys the semblance of a free and emancipated life in a world that never completely accepts her. Sammy, brought up in England, is still a product of the Middle East. He succeeds in escaping from the political restrictions of the military regime, but cannot escape his macho culture. Hassan is the victim of his ideals. His belief in the revolution is shattered when he perceives the corruption of the new government and when the Egyptian Army is defeated in the Suez Canal War. Through the adventure, romance, joy, and tragedy of our four protagonists, we get a glimpse of life in the Middle East in the fifties and sixties.

Book The Albert Samson Mysteries Volume One

Download or read book The Albert Samson Mysteries Volume One written by Michael Z. Lewin and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A trio of thrilling cases for the Indianapolis private eye from the “fast, funny, and brilliant” three-time Edgar Award finalist (Wall Street Journal). Michael Lewin “has brains and style”—and so does his Indy gumshoe, Albert Samson, so relaxed he doesn’t even carry a gun. In these three mysteries collected in one volume, Samson uses his wits to solve some very seedy crimes (Los Angeles Times). Ask the Right Question: Private investigator Albert Samson gets a shake-up with his new client: sixteen-year-old Eloise Crystal is desperate to find her biological father. What the detective unearths is the kind of dirt that makes people do desperate things. Thrust into a moneyed clan of old secrets and killer deceptions, Samson discovers that the first lie may be Eloise’s. The Way We Die Now: When Vietnam veteran Ralph Tomanek is charged with manslaughter, Samson believes there’s more to the story. But why was a man with a history of PTSD hired as an armed guard in the first place? The answer is a dizzying case of blackmail that lands Samson on the wrong end of the gun. The Enemies Within: Samson’s new client is Bennett Willson, a struggling writer looking for justice. It’s a pretty glitzy case for the cheapest detective in Indianapolis: Strong-arm a big-time Broadway producer who allegedly stole Willson’s play. Unfortunately, Willson proves to be as pure as the Indianapolis slush. What he wants is revenge. For Samson, finding out why could mean the final curtain call. The recipient of a Mystery Masters Award, a Raymond Chandler Society Award, and a Maltese Falcon Society Award, Michael Lewin, “writes with style and sensibility and wit . . . He can frighten the reader, too” (Ross Macdonald).
