Book excerpt: 'The Great North-Western Conspiracy in All Its Startling Details' is a firsthand account of the investigation into the Confederate conspiracy to destroy cities in the North through arson and other means during the American Civil War. The book uncovers trading with the enemy by Union officials and the involvement of the Sons of Liberty in a plan to free Confederate prisoners and arm themselves with weapons from federal arsenals. If successful, the plan would have led to a Northwestern confederacy and a dismembered North. The author, I. Winslow Ayer, presents a concise and connected history of the conspiracy, shedding light on the magnitude, sagacity, and completeness of the plot, which posed a significant threat to the Union's victory.

Book The Devil Is in the Details Analysis of Substantial Market Power in Fijian Markets

Download or read book The Devil Is in the Details Analysis of Substantial Market Power in Fijian Markets written by Releshni Karan Reddy and published by Scientific Research Publishing, Inc. USA. This book was released on 2022-07-13 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiji, being remotely located with a small population, does not attract many players to its economy. Fewer players with large market shares coupled with high barriers to entry allow firms with substantial market power (“SMP”) to form. This research aims to explore the existence of SMP amongst selected markets and the adequacy of Fiji’s regulatory law, which is inspired by the US and EU competition regulation models. Based on the analysis of competition cases and in-depth interviews with members of the Fijian competition authority, the research examines how FCCC has dealt with the issues of testing SMP in relevant markets. Three industries were randomly selected as case studies. These were the telecommunications industry, shipping industry and the LPG industry. SMP was tested using a three-stage test. Stage One was choosing the relevant market and Stage Two was analysing the market conditions such as market shares of players and barriers to entry. Stage Three was analysing whether the player could maintain its price independently of its consumers and competitors. If Stages Two and Three was affirmative in respect of Stage One, SMP was held to exist. Legislation was closely examined to identify and verify the test of firms holding SMP. The results show existence of firms holding SMP in the chosen markets in telecommunications, shipping and LPG sectors. Competition legislation in Fiji does not limit the mere existence of SMP but punishes abuse of its SMP. The results identify the ways in which the authority seeks to adjust its competition system to the particularities of a small developing country, in terms of legislation, economy, culture and institutional framework. The existing legislation needs to be reformed to include provisions identifying tests for SMP. The study reveals inconsistencies between the formal provisions of the competition law and the manner in which it is applied and advances recommendations for improvement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You know how people say that the Devil is in the details? Learn how God is in the details through this inspiring book that kicks the Devil out and gives God full reign in the details of planning your church or religious group event. Learn how to: Seek God for direction from the initial idea through the big day. Cultivate positive relationships, even with those who may be difficult or disgruntled. Develop a proven planning time line that will keep you on track, no matter when you start in the process. Keep the event fresh, even if its the umpteenth event anniversary. Kick the Devil out and give him no foothold in the planning process. I have enjoyed reading the book, God Is in the Details, by Evangelist Lynne Shivers. In it she brings out the importance of planning our events with a purpose and with excellence. Often, we do not think about the planning that goes into an event and are discouraged by the results. But if we planned in advance, things would certainly turn out much better. The book also brings out another important point, and that is God is in the details. This is a must-read book; its a great resource guide for any group leader in the planning of an event. I give it two thumbs up. Bishop Gary Harper Pastor, Greater Grace Temple-Taylor, Taylor, MI

Book The Devil Is in the Details

Download or read book The Devil Is in the Details written by Rachel VanSickle-Ward and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The level of detail in a given law can have dramatic consequences for how that law is interpreted and applied. In The Devil Is in the Details, Rachel VanSickle-Ward focuses on the dynamics of social policy construction in the United States in order to better understand why the wording of legislation can range from the specific to the ambiguous. When policies are high salience, the fissures produced by partisan discord, interest group diversity, and pluralistic executive branches promote ambiguous policy. When policies are lower profile, this relationship is more tenuous and, at times, inverted, with contention producing more policy detail. Put simply, on important and controversial legislation, ambiguity serves as a vehicle for compromise when key participants disagree over details. Moreover, fragmentation is a more powerful driver of ambiguity than limits in technical expertise or legislative capacity. This multi-method investigation is the first to measure statute specificity directly. VanSickle-Ward combines comprehensive content analysis of more than 250 health and welfare bills passed in 44 states in the 1990s and 2000s with in-depth interviews of policy-making elites.
