Book excerpt: Through 67 interviews and 59 colour photographs, It's a Living reveals the energy and struggle of the world of work in Vietnam today. A goldfish peddler installing aquariums, a business school graduate selling shoes on the sidewalk, a college student running an extensive multi-level sales network, and a girl doing promotions but intent on moving into management, are just a few of the people profiled. Based on frank and freewheeling interviews conducted by students, the book engages a broad range of Vietnamese, both living in Vietnam and abroad, on their feelings about work, life and getting ahead. By providing a ground-level view of the texture of daily working life in the midst of rapid and unsettling change, the book reveals Vietnam today as a place where ordinary people are leveraging whatever assets they have, not just to survive, but to make a better life for themselves, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Download or read book It s a Long Story written by Willie Nelson and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Willie Nelson shares his life story in this "heartfelt" bestselling memoir of true love, wild times, best friends, and barrooms (Washington Post). "Unvarnished. Funny. Leaving no stone unturned." . . . So say the publishers about this book I've written. What I say is that this is the story of my life, told as clear as a Texas sky and in the same rhythm that I lived it. It's a story of restlessness and the purity of the moment and living right. Of my childhood in Abbott, Texas, to the Pacific Northwest, from Nashville to Hawaii and all the way back again. Of selling vacuum cleaners and encyclopedias while hosting radio shows and writing song after song, hoping to strike gold. It's a story of true love, wild times, best friends, and barrooms, with a musical sound track ripping right through it. My life gets lived on the road, at home, and on the road again, tried and true, and I've written it all down from my heart to yours. Signed, Willie Nelson.
Download or read book Naked Men written by Alicia Giménez-Bartlett and published by Europa Editions. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Planeta Prize–winning novel from the author of the Petra Delicado series: “A highly literate noir, a powerful tale of lives spiraling out of control” (NB magazine). Irene’s husband has left her for a younger woman and her family business is on the verge of collapse, but the last thing she wants is to be the subject of gossip or pity. So she starts spending time with a divorcée who, in liberating herself from the bonds of marriage, has also freed herself from the clutches of the old crowd of “couple friends.” Javier is a literature teacher who suddenly loses his job at a Catholic school. He’s not ambitious—the months go by and no work materializes. Then, almost by accident, he gets back in contact with a cocky friend from his youth who introduces him to the world of stripping and male prostitution. Circumstance brings Irene and Javier together: he gets some extra cash and mental stimulation out of their relationship, and she finds an outlet for her frustrations. However, Irene doesn’t want to have sex with him—she just wants to see him naked, humiliated, dominated. Their relationship takes a troubling turn, but things may be even more complicated than they seem. Alicia Giménez-Bartlett weaves a tale of economic and personal devastation, portraying the ways that life’s disappointments can bring people to do things they never would have imagined. “Incendiary . . . This provocative dive into gender, power, and class uses diverse viewpoints to craft a powerful story and an unpredictable, memorable ending.” —Publishers Weekly “A stark realist portrait of characters who are searching for their place in a world without redemption.” —Culturamas

In this highly entertaining and motivational book, John sets out to prove that when we do what we love, we're actually more likely to be happier, healthier, wealthier, and more successful. He addresses the significant blocks that people experience when they consider doing what they love, including: "Doing what you love is for time off, not work", "Doing what I love would be selfish", "I just don't know what I love" and "I could never make a living from doing what I love". Through no-nonsense ideas, fascinating facts and motivating calls to action, John brings us from pessimism to inspiration, so that our thoughts become powered by "F**k it, I can't waste any more of my life", "F**k it, I will find a way to make this work", "F**k it, I will do what I love". F**k It: Do What You Love is not just a book: it's a step-by-step map to get every single person to spend their precious time on this planet doing what they love.

Download or read book Mickey s Fight written by Mark Macholl and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wasn’t dreaming; I was visiting. I had a unicorn race with Jesus, Mary, and Jesus’ dad. Mick’s father, Mark, was stunned to hear the words from his son, who was battling cancer. He posted the story on Facebook—allowing people to intimately step inside their lives. After his son’s diagnosis, Mark had doubts and was even angry, but God stood close to him and led his family across the country seeking treatments banned in some places. Jesus gave him and his wife, Rachel, the strength to do whatever it took to save their boy. The Macholls’ need to help their son also ignited a desire to promote change and educate the world about the ineffectiveness of conventional medicine versus integrative care. They seek to spark a movement that will give parents a choice and provide hope after a grim diagnosis. The stakes for Mark and Rachel couldn’t be higher: their young son’s life. With candor, they share the ups and downs they went through during a struggle that ultimately brought them closer to God—and each other.
Download or read book The Scramble A Single in Seattle Novella written by Kristen Proby and published by 1001 Dark Nights Press. This book was released on 2023-03-06 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An all-new holiday meet-cute romance from New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Kristen Proby and 1001 Dark Nights… There are two things you need to know about me. 1: I’m never late. And 2: I hate Christmas. Yes, I’m a girl who hates the holidays. My entire, enormous family is already enjoying their holiday vacation in Iceland, but thanks to my busy job and having to meet them there, I’m late. They could have chosen any holiday to fly across the world, but Christmas won, which sent me scrambling because the end of the year is my busiest time. It’s difficult to carve out moments to see the family at all. So, now, I’m forty thousand feet in the air, trying to get to Iceland before Christmas morning, all while also attempting to get some work done. If only the hot guy next to me would leave me be. Dylan says I should put the work away until after my holiday and relax a bit. And while his suggestion of spending some time together on the north Atlantic island seems preposterous, I can’t help but feel intrigued when he promises to show me how to enjoy the Yuletide season properly. After all, I can’t possibly spend every minute with my family. But how do I just shrug off my duty to my job and throw caution to the wind for a stranger...no matter how handsome he is? Because that’s something else about me: I never throw caution to the wind—even a beautiful, blustery Icelandic wind. Then again, Mama always said, “Never say never…” **Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “It’s a Wonderful Life” has become an important holiday tradition for families. But why does the movie have such a profound effect on people and what are its major themes? James Dillon answers those questions by highlighting the movie’s recurring motifs and themes. As someone who has walked a similar path to George Bailey, he’s the perfect person to tell this story and share life lessons such as: • Sometimes, miracles simply involve looking at things differently. • Viewing the movie through a lens of spiritual faith can be a productive way to move closer to the Lord. • George’s life is a journey and a struggle to discover what was there from the beginning, what was always with him even in times of darkness, and what would be there at the end: God’s love. The author also explores the background and context of the movie’s origins, the life of its director, Frank Capra, and its place in our culture. Suggestions to facilitate small group discussions are included. Take a spiritual journey and reflect on your faith and purpose with The Gospel of “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
Download or read book It s a Bear And It s Coming written by Charlie Rohrbaugh and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when an ordinary hunter is exposed to some rather extraordinary opportunities? From the first hunt in Canada’s British Columbia it’s easy to see that the guides and supporting staff are the heroes of these adventures. Too often they are the unsung and tireless professionals that make or break a hunter’s trip. In the end, it is their hunting prowess that makes for a successful hunt, whether or not an animal is taken. It all begins in the wilderness of British Columbia on hunts for elk, moose, caribou and mountain goat. The sheer vastness of the wilderness and rugged remoteness of the region adds an element of difficulty and danger not normally encountered in other locales. Add to that the presence of the fearless grizzly bears prowling the mountains and things can get dicey in the blink of an eye. “Some days you get the bear, and some days the bear gets you,” takes on an entirely new meaning as you start the day, hoping today doesn’t fall into either of those categories. From British Columbia the scene shifts to Wyoming for mule deer and turkeys followed by a whirlwind trip to South Africa for plains game. Barely back from South Africa long enough to do laundry, we headed off to Idaho on a spring black bear hunt. Two more trips to Wyoming followed for antelope and elk before heading back to South Africa for Kudu and Waterbuck. Between the last two Wyoming trips, our first grandchild was born and the second was on the way. That was the impetus for beginning to document the details of these trips. Someday, hopefully our grandchildren will be able to read about my experiences with the same interest I used to read about others’ hunts when I was a boy. Then maybe, just maybe one or more of them will find their way out to where the wild things live to see, hear, smell and feel for themselves what it’s like to be truly alive and free.
