Book Breathe

Download or read book Breathe written by Imani Perry and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2020 Chautauqua Prize Finalist 2020 NAACP Image Award Nominee - Outstanding Literary Work (Nonfiction) Best-of Lists: Best Nonfiction Books of 2019 (Kirkus Reviews) · 25 Can't-Miss Books of 2019 (The Undefeated) Explores the terror, grace, and beauty of coming of age as a Black person in contemporary America and what it means to parent our children in a persistently unjust world. Emotionally raw and deeply reflective, Imani Perry issues an unflinching challenge to society to see Black children as deserving of humanity. She admits fear and frustration for her African American sons in a society that is increasingly racist and at times seems irredeemable. However, as a mother, feminist, writer, and intellectual, Perry offers an unfettered expression of love—finding beauty and possibility in life—and she exhorts her children and their peers to find the courage to chart their own paths and find steady footing and inspiration in Black tradition. Perry draws upon the ideas of figures such as James Baldwin, W. E. B. DuBois, Emily Dickinson, Toni Morrison, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Ida B. Wells. She shares vulnerabilities and insight from her own life and from encounters in places as varied as the West Side of Chicago; Birmingham, Alabama; and New England prep schools. With original art for the cover by Ekua Holmes, Breathe offers a broader meditation on race, gender, and the meaning of a life well lived and is also an unforgettable lesson in Black resistance and resilience.

Book excerpt: CHANGES is the story of a family in crisis; it is the story of an immigrant family trying to cope with life in urban America, about the trauma that cross-cultural conflicts bring, the pressure to conform or do your own thing, against the backdrop of todays America. In order to integrate into the mainstream, or for that matter, pursue the American Dream, can an immigrant family maintain their identity, their native lifestyle, in the turbulent ambiance of urban America or do they succumb to its pressures and change their lifestyle altogether? These are the fundamental questions that most immigrants face, and have to deal with. Many succeed; others fail, while a few just hang in there. The main characters are Ebo, the husband and father; Christina, the wife and mother, and Chris and Lisa, two teenage kids, aged sixteen and eighteen. In the face of overwhelming odds, Ebo tries to maintain control of the family, and tries to do it the only way he knows how; the old fashioned way. Along the way, he runs into a few characters that expose him to some of the diversity on the American social, cultural and political landscape.

A licensed minister and an MBA in accounting coming together to cowrite this novel? No, Snare of the Fowler is a wild ride that is definitely not your typical thriller. It is so much more… Imani Richards, a forensic accountant, is on the job of a lifetime: consulting with the FBI on an investigation into a pharmaceutical company that may be involved in drug trafficking and money laundering. Then everything goes sideways. The FBI’s suspicions seem to be confirmed when Imani’s life is threatened, more than once. Someone is clearly trying to scare her off the case. Desperate, Imani recites a powerful prayer of protection, Psalm 91, that she learned as a child. And it works! More than that, this thriller takes a sharp, exciting turn, as Imani learns that this scripture has unlocked a power within her—and she discovers a supernatural destiny no one could have believed possible. Two Lemon Women are the coauthors of Snare of the Fowler and use their unique professional experience—one as a minister and the other as an accountant—to shape this powerful page-turner. More than a work of fiction, the novel presents to readers the possibility that we can all have supernatural powers if we learn to tap into the right power source.

Book Papers on Language and Culture an African Perspective

Download or read book Papers on Language and Culture an African Perspective written by Mary Nyambura Muchiri and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-05-19 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the papers reproduced here have either been presented at a national or international conference, and some have been published elsewhere. I have obtained permission to republish because I think it is important to have them all together. The idea came to me when I was asked, during an interview, why I wrote on such different topics as part of my scholarship. The question was based on the different publications in which the person asking had found them. I had to explain that they are all on language and culture, two areas that are closely interrelated. It occurred to me that having all the papers published in one volume would help show how they relate to one another, and thereby provide a more meaningful dialogue on the general topic. I therefore hope that although each paper stands alone, use of cross-referencing will provide a cumulative effect that is impossible when the papers are read as separate publications. The last chapter is not a paper in the traditional sense, in that it is just a list of words. However, it adds to the readers understanding of the Kikuyu language. The semantic domains are a people groups way of understanding, categorizing and labeling the world around them. I hope it will be especially important as a source for future scholars who will want to analyze the culture and thought processes of their ancestors.
