Book excerpt: From the renowned psychologist who introduced the world to “growth mindset” comes this updated edition of the million-copy bestseller—featuring transformative insights into redefining success, building lifelong resilience, and supercharging self-improvement. “Through clever research studies and engaging writing, Dweck illuminates how our beliefs about our capabilities exert tremendous influence on how we learn and which paths we take in life.”—Bill Gates, GatesNotes “It’s not always the people who start out the smartest who end up the smartest.” After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., discovered a simple but groundbreaking idea: the power of mindset. In this brilliant book, she shows how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. People with a fixed mindset—those who believe that abilities are fixed—are less likely to flourish than those with a growth mindset—those who believe that abilities can be developed. Mindset reveals how great parents, teachers, managers, and athletes can put this idea to use to foster outstanding accomplishment. In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. She introduces a phenomenon she calls false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset. She also expands the mindset concept beyond the individual, applying it to the cultures of groups and organizations. With the right mindset, you can motivate those you lead, teach, and love—to transform their lives and your own.

Download or read book No Tears for Carol written by Vaughn West Carol Vaughn West and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "No tears for Carol" is the story of a courageous woman and her struggle to survive in a world she did not understand or feel she belonged in. Borne into a world of the occult, she escaped only to endure an incestuous childhood marked by terror, and physical and emotional abuse, which locked her away in a traumatic fog until she was seventeen years of age. How much pain and abuse can one person endure? The answer is "endless" as long as she is walking in the arms of her Heavenly Father. This is my story. It is a lifetime of memories, pain, terror and finally freedom. It is a story of a shaky faith in a 'daddy' God who never condemned the times I fell but rewarded me endlessly for the times I allowed Him to gently pick me up and try once more! My life is like a movie, as if I am walking this journey with you. I see no faces in my childhood and I disassociate as though I were merely a spectator looking on. I believe that life is an illusion, a conglomerate of facts we tell ourselves to make it through the day and night. I was a chameleon, taking on the persona of those around me, flowing from one dictator to the next. In retrospect it was the knowledge that I was "invisible," that even the dead dry hay, fed to the cattle, had more value than I did. That was my legacy from my mother! I ask you not to focus on Carol but on Jesus Christ, who walked this journey with me. It was His love and strength that got me through it. God did not want puppets to follow Him around so He gave man free will. The people in my life chose to abuse me. I also chose to abuse myself. But Jesus told me He would, "Restore the years the locust have eaten," and my friend He has done just that. I believe my book will give hope, courage and compassion to understand individuals who have such unfortunate afflictions.

Book excerpt: Skip tracer Henry Swann cares little about anything but money, so when a beautiful Upper East Side woman shows up in his office and hires him to find her missing husband, he smiles and takes the cash. But when this seemingly simple missing-person case turns into homicide, Swann finds himself trapped in a complex web of connections and multiple identities that takes him out of New York City and across two continents. Praise for SWANN’S LAST SONG … “Swann’s got the smarts and hard-boiled cynicism of Sam Spade, but he’s also got a wicked sense of humor that keeps things cool even when the action gets hot.” —Brian Kilmeade, author of New York Times bestseller The Games Do Count “Salzberg’s a hell of a writer. He delivers thrills, insight and plenty of laughs. Swann is a very cool take on the classic P.I.” —Andrew Klavan, author of True Crime and Don’t Say a Word “A veritable travelogue of suspense, Swann’s Last Song grabs hold of the reader and doesn’t let go. Salzberg’s anti-hero is a soulful investigator and one of the most paradoxically endearing characters I’ve come across. I hope this isn’t Swann’s last song.” —Joy Behar (co-host of The View) “Salzberg defies expectations left and right in this subtly subversive, genre-twisting page turner. Swann’s Last Song is where literature meets entertainment” —Mark Goldblatt, author of Africa Speaks

Download or read book When Jack Was with Us written by B. K. Holway and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban realism in the tradition of E.L. Doctorow, William Kennedy, Philip Roth and Jimmy Breslin, "When Jack Was With Us" immerses the reader in neighborhood life in New York City from the late 1950's through the late 1960's. Unlike many other novels by Baby Boomers, this novel makes no attempt to sugarcoat or nostaligize; it presents life as the author saw it while growing up, in all its beauty and all its brutality. There is no single protagonist; a number of characters whose lives intertwine each seek to make the best out of their lives amid the rich and often volatile ethnic tapestry of New York, against the backdrop of social change as the novel moves from the somnolent 1950's through the turbulent 1960's. Each character struggles and finds his/her damnation or redemption amid a city that personifies a nation in flux. It is a "coming of age" not only for the characters but for the greater American collective psyche.
Download or read book The Price of Salt or Carol written by Patricia Highsmith and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2004-03-17 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A great American writer…Highsmith's writing is wicked…it puts a spell on you." —Entertainment Weekly Patricia Highsmith's story of romantic obsession may be one of the most important, but still largely unrecognized, novels of the twentieth century. First published in 1952 and touted as "the novel of a love that society forbids," the book soon became a cult classic. Based on a true story plucked from Highsmith's own life, The Price of Salt (or Carol) tells the riveting drama of Therese Belivet, a stage designer trapped in a department-store day job, whose routine is forever shattered by a gorgeous epiphany—the appearance of Carol Aird, a customer who comes in to buy her daughter a Christmas toy. Therese begins to gravitate toward the alluring suburban housewife, who is trapped in a marriage as stultifying as Therese's job. They fall in love and set out across the United States, ensnared by society's confines and the imminent disapproval of others, yet propelled by their infatuation. The Price of Salt is a brilliantly written story that may surprise Highsmith fans and will delight those discovering her work.
