Book excerpt: A 2017 Caldecott Honor Book that The New York Times calls “both classic and ultracontemporary,” Leave Me Alone! is an epic tale about one grandmother, a giant sack of yarn, and her ultimate quest to finish her knitting. One day, a grandmother shouts, "LEAVE ME ALONE!" and leaves her tiny home and her very big family to journey to the moon and beyond to find peace and quiet to finish her knitting. Along the way, she encounters ravenous bears, obnoxious goats, and even hordes of aliens! But nothing stops grandma from accomplishing her goal—knitting sweaters for her many grandchildren to keep them warm and toasty for the coming winter. Vera Brosgol's slyly clever and unexpectedly funny modern folktale is certain to warm even the coldest of hearts. Book excerpt: In today's society the government seems to have control over our lives no matter which way we turn. The rules and reglations regarding what we can or cannot do seem to have no end. It wasn't that many years ago that a person could live a life free to do pretty much whatever they wanted as long as they didn't hurt anyone or interfere with someone else's freedoms. The courts are out of control and put people in jail for minor infractions. Prosecutors want convictions and don't care whether you are guilty or not, they just want a high conviction rate because they think it looks good on their record. People are tired of the endless laws and want a simpler life free of all the restrictions making us a slave to our government, the courts and the police who watch over us constantly. Occasionally in all government offices, in the courts and in the police departments you will encounter an individual without scruples, or common sense who is not qualified to hold his/her position. The end result is, that person is going to perpetrate unjustifiable actions against innocent individuals or deny them access to their rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness according to what our country was founded upon. Money seems to be the law of the land now. You've got it they want it!

Book Leave Me Alone with the Recipes

Download or read book Leave Me Alone with the Recipes written by Cipe Pineles and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saveur “Best New Cookbooks of the Year" Finalist for the Gourmand Award for Cookbook Design The newly discovered illustrated recipes of wildly influential yet unsung designer Cipe Pineles, introducing her delectable work in food and art to a new generation. Not long ago, Sarah Rich and Wendy MacNaughton discovered a painted manuscript at an antiquarian book fair that drew them in like magnets: it displayed a vibrant painting of hot pink beets and a hand-lettered recipe for borscht written in script so full of life, it was hard to believe it was more than sixty-five years old. It was the work of one of the most influential graphic designers of the twentieth century--Cipe (pronounced “C. P.”) Pineles, the first female art director at Condé Nast, whose impact lives on in the work of Maira Kalman, Julia Rothman, and many others. Completed in 1945, it was a keepsake of her connection to her childhood's Eastern European food--she called it Leave Me Alone with the Recipes. For Wendy and Sarah, it was a talisman of a woman they had not known was their idol: a strong, independent spirit whose rich archive--of drawings, recipes, diaries, and letters to family and friends--led them into a dazzling history of mid-century design, art, food, New York City society, and culture. They teamed up with Maria Popova of Brain Pickings and Debbie Millman of Design Matters, along with contributors Mimi Sheraton, Steven Heller, Paula Scher, and Maira Kalman, to present Cipe Pineles's life and work as it should be presented--in glorious color. With Pineles's illustrated cookbook and a section of updated recipes as its centerpiece, this gorgeous volume will delight foodies and design devotees alike.

Book Leave Me Alone

Download or read book Leave Me Alone written by Michael Calpino and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America faces grave challenges in this second decade of the twenty-first century. Debt and deficits, moral degradation, terrorism, corruption, and unemployment, to name a few. The one thing all these problems have in common is that they were caused by government, made worse by more government and they will not be solved until we, as Americans, accept the fact that government is the problem and not the solution. If we are going to solve our problems and make it through this difficult time in our history, we must embrace the pure liberty of our heritage, the freedom for all promised in our founding documents. It is this generation over the next decade that will decide the future for our posterity and the fate of freedom in the world. Whether they curse us in the darkness or admire us for lifting the light of liberty once again is up to us.

Book The Complete Short Stories of Natalia Ginzburg

Download or read book The Complete Short Stories of Natalia Ginzburg written by Natalia Ginzburg and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natalia Ginzburg (1916-1991) is today recognized as one of the foremost woman writers to emerge from twentieth-century Italy. The Complete Short Stories of Natalia Ginzburg brings together in English translation for the first time the eight short stories that Ginzburg wrote between 1933 and 1965. These early works are significant in the context of Ginzburg's wider repertoire. The key themes and ideas occurring therein would come to characterize much of her later work, particularly in terms of her exploration of the difficulties implicit in developing and sustaining meaningful human relationships. Her short stories also provide intriguing insight into the development of her trademark literary style. Including an introduction by the translator and extensive contributions from Alan Bullock, Emeritus Professor of Italian at the University of Leeds, The Complete Short Stories of Natalia Ginzburg encourages a deeper understanding of Ginzburg's life's work and compliments those other collections and individual works which are already widely available in English.

Book excerpt: “The right thing never just happens; you have to make it happen.” Morgan knows her parents left her in boarding school so they could travel the world, which is why hardly anything changes when they’re killed in an accident during her freshman year at Fairfield. But every orphan needs a guardian, and Morgan’s is her uncle Tom, a famous and somewhat eccentric author. Tom’s New York City apartment has plenty of space for Morgan, and her room is the nicest one she’s ever seen, but her uncle, uncomfortable suddenly raising a fourteen-year-old girl, seems distant and preoccupied. Alone in an unfamiliar world, Morgan imagines what her school roommate, the popular and sarcastic Trinck, would think of everything. Would she approve of Morgan’s newly discovered love of reading or the friends she makes in New York? Slowly, Morgan makes a place for herself that is all her own and reflects on the person she is becoming—whether Trinck would like it or not.
