Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "After the fire that destroyed the Archaic Temple of Poseidon, a layer of burnt debris was left on the site beneath the floor of the Classical temple. A portion of the layer seems to belong to the temple treasury that included objects of precious metals and gems that had been stored in one or more wooden chests. While the majority of the 500+ items recovered represent dedications, only the smaller pieces survived intact. Fragments of large bronze vessels and utensils appear to be the remains left behind after most of the metal was salvaged for melting and recasting. In time, the objects range from the early 7th to the early 5th century with a concentration in the second half of the 6th century B.C. In type, they represent personal possessions of athletes and warriors, women, craftsmen and fishermen, while a few figurines and tripods were made for dedication. In Appendix A, Julie Bentz discusses the ceramic evidence for the date of the fire; Appendix B contains a table illustrating the distribution of objects by type within the burnt layer."--Abstract on item.

Book excerpt: Two successive temples, built on the same foundations, are discussed in this detailed architectural history: an Archaic building built around 700 B.C. and a Classical 5th-century successor. Little is left visible at Isthmia of the temples that would have dominated the sanctuary, and, therefore, this study presents a painstaking exercise in detective work. This yields important results, such as an almost complete reconstruction of the Archaic roof, and a detailed investigation of the workings of the perirrhanterion (a basin for ablutions). Traces of color on the architectural fragments of the temple have been painstakingly recorded, and an appendix discusses the evidence for an unusual 32.04 cm foot being used as the basis for construction.

This was prompted by the need to update it with the new results of historical and archaeological research on the panhellenic sanctuaries and their games, as well as from the need to replace and supplement the photographic material of the many sites and monuments where excavation and restoration works have provided new insights. In this way readers have in their hands a book that is fully up to date about the Pan-Hellenic games and ancient Greek athletic. Modeled after physical exercises and competitions that existed in earlier Near Eastern cultures, hundreds of athletic games took place in Greek antiquity, extending across every area of the Mediterranean in which Greek culture flourished. Of the vast number of games, four attained the status of panhellenic games: the Olympic games, held at Olympia in honor of Zeus; the Pythian games at Delphi, at the festival of Apollo; the Isthmian games, at the sanctuary of Poseidon at Isthmia; and the Nemean games, celebrated in the sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea. In this second edition, as well as updating the text to take account of recent scholarship and re-ordering, Robin Osborne has addressed more explicitly the weaknesses and unsustainable interpretations which the first edition chose merely to pass over. He now spells out why this book features no ‘rise of the polis’ and no ‘colonization’, and why the treatment of Greek settlement abroad is necessarily spread over various chapters.
