Book Issues Raised During the Army After Next Spring Wargame

Download or read book Issues Raised During the Army After Next Spring Wargame written by Walt L. Perry and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 1999 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army After Next (AAN) wargames provide a structured forum for a discussion of national security issues associated with the nature of warfare in the early-to-mid 21st century. This report summarizes issues generated during the AAN Spring Wargame 1998. The wargame was set in 2021. The major game activity involved an attack by Red on the states on the south shore of the Persian Gulf. The United States was also involved in a multinational peacekeeping operation in Indonesia. In addition, continuing border conflict between India and Pakistan escalated dangerously during the game, eventually resulting in nuclear weapon use. These three separate events were designed to examine the role of AAN forces in global conflicts. Five dominant themes cut across the twelve issues identified in this study: rapid deployment into theater, asymmetric responses, urban warfare, homeland defense, and information operations.

Book excerpt: The Army After Next (AAN) project, led by the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), was initiated by the Chief of Staff of the Army (CSA) in February 1996. The project's goals are to link Army XXI to a long-term vision of the Army extending well into the next century, and to ensure that this vision informs evolving Army research and development requirements. At the request of the TRADOC's Deputy Chief of Staff for Doctrine (DCSDOC), RAND Arroyo Center is supporting TRADOC in this effort. As part of the AAN project, TRADOC is conducting a series of high level wargames to explore issues affecting the development of the U.S. Army after about 2010. The 1998 Spring Wargame is the third game in the series. All of these games have been held at the Center for Strategic Leadership at the Army War College. The Arroyo Center's role in the 1998 Spring Wargame is to assist TRADOC by (1) participating with the TRADOC Analysis Center (TRAC) in the development of the wargame Analysis Plan; (2) identifying the issues, derived from the game objectives, that were explored in the game; (3) participating with TRAC in the development of the Emerging Impressions Report; and (4) assessing game results. This report documents the Arroyo Center's analysis of the data collected during the game, and information gathered from various sources since the completion of the game, including our Initial Impressions Report (PM-809-A) and TRAC's Emerging Impressions Report to TRADOC. This report analyzes major issues and insights arising from the game and offers recommendations to improve the AAN process.

Book excerpt: Annotation "What will be the Nature of Warfare thirty years into the future, and what is the Army's long-term vision of how it will prepare for and fight those wars?" "To help address these questions, the Army After Next (AAN) cycle of events during fiscal year 1999 included games on Army Special Operations, Army Medical Department, Information Operation, Space, Force Projection, National Security, Campaign Planning, Pre-Assessment, and the Spring Wargame. The authors discuss issues that emerged from the games regarding coalition warfare, strategic preclusion, war with a nuclear-armed opponent, exploitation of space, sea control, air superiority, sustainment, combat in urban terrain, refugees during conflict, air mobility of battle forces, survivability of battle forces, and training battle force soldiers."--BOOK JACKET. Book Zones of Control

Download or read book Zones of Control written by Pat Harrigan and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 845 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at wargaming’s past, present, and future—from digital games to tabletop games—and its use in entertainment, education, and military planning. With examples from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Harpoon, Warhammer 40,000, and more! Games with military themes date back to antiquity, and yet they are curiously neglected in much of the academic and trade literature on games and game history. This volume fills that gap, providing a diverse set of perspectives on wargaming’s past, present, and future. In Zones of Control, contributors consider wargames played for entertainment, education, and military planning, in terms of design, critical analysis, and historical contexts. They consider both digital and especially tabletop games, most of which cover specific historical conflicts or are grounded in recognizable real-world geopolitics. Game designers and players will find the historical and critical contexts often missing from design and hobby literature; military analysts will find connections to game design and the humanities; and academics will find documentation and critique of a sophisticated body of cultural work in which the complexity of military conflict is represented in ludic systems and procedures. Each section begins with a long anchoring chapter by an established authority, which is followed by a variety of shorter pieces both analytic and anecdotal. Topics include the history of playing at war; operations research and systems design; wargaming and military history; wargaming’s ethics and politics; gaming irregular and non-kinetic warfare; and wargames as artistic practice.
