Book Israeli Air Superiority in the 1967 Arab Israeli War An Analysis of Operational Art

Download or read book Israeli Air Superiority in the 1967 Arab Israeli War An Analysis of Operational Art written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the Israeli Air Force (lAF) practice of operational art in the planning and execution of the preemptive air strike against Egypt in the 1967 Six Day War. This key action shaped the Israeli victory and was the product of thorough planning and operational artistry. The lAF practice of operational art was influenced by a cohesive national strategy and a complementary military doctrine. The evolution of Israeli strategy and doctrine, through two previous wars, led directly to the development of an operational design to defeat Israel's enemies and ensure Israel's survival. The Israeli practice of operational art is analyzed by first examining the origins of the Six Day War to understand the basis of the Israeli strategy. Second, by examining the formulation of Israeli doctrine, the fundamental mihtary principles which guided lAF employment of air power. Third, by analyzing the lAF practice of operational art in terms of the present day concept of operational design, specifically the operational idea or scheme. Fourth, by relating relevant lessons from the IAF practice of operational art to the present day employment of air power. Israel's strategic vulnerability, small population, and limited resources required a substantial military qualitative advantage to avoid destruction. The sound practice operational art ensured this qualitative advantage was present. A clear understanding of the concepts of operational art provided a framework for superior planning and the execution of air power to achieve the operational, and in turn, strategic objectives necessary to win the Six Day War.

Book Air Superiority Battle In The Middle East 1967 1973

Download or read book Air Superiority Battle In The Middle East 1967 1973 written by Major Clarence E. Olschner III and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is an historical study of the strategy, tactics, and weapons employed by Israel, Egypt, and Syria in the battle for air superiority from 1967 through 1973. The study is developed chronologically beginning with the 1967 War, through the War of Attrition, and ending with the cease-fire in the 1973 War. It has been compiled from an extensive review of unclassified, primarily secondary, unofficial sources. The paper concludes that, in a mid-intensity war with modern air forces and air defense forces: 1) The achievement of strategic, tactical, and/or technological surprise can significantly influence the battle for air superiority, 2) Missiles have demonstrated the capability to significantly influence the air superiority battle in surface-to-air, air-to-air, and air-to-ground operations, 3) Air superiority can be achieved over the modern battlefield only by defeating both surface-to-air and air-to-air capabilities of the enemy, 4) The achievement of air superiority over the battle area requires the combined efforts of air and land forces of which long range artillery may be the most effective weapon for the suppression of surface-based air defenses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of how the Israeli Force achieved one of the most audacious and important air power victories in history, wiping out enemy air forces more than twice its own size in a single morning. This new illustrated study examines the planning, execution and aftermath of Operation Focus showing how it not only effectively won the Six Day War for Israel, but also impacted military thinking--in the Middle East and all over the globe--so profoundly that military leaders' perceptions of air superiority were practically transformed in its wake, signalling a turning point in the Cold War. The Israeli Air Force's Operation Focus was not only a watershed in the history of the modern Middle East but was one of the greatest and most effective air superiority campaigns ever waged. On a single morning, almost the entire IAF was committed to a surprise, preemptive airstrike against the air forces of the encircling Arab states. The attack was extraordinarily successful. Hundreds of Arab aircraft were destroyed, their airfields crippled, and the IAF gained almost complete air supremacy for the rest of the war.

Book Key to the Sinai

Download or read book Key to the Sinai written by George Walter Gawrych and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In both the 1956 and 1967 wars, Abu Ageila was the main gateway to the Sinai for the Israel Defense Forces. Yet there were marked differences between Egyptian and Israeli war plans, preparations, operations, and results in the two battles for the area. In 1956, Israel carried the burden of a constricting alliance with Britain and France and faced other extensive military problems. The result was that Israel fought a difficult and costly battle for Abu Ageila. In contrast, in 1967, the Israel Defense Forces developed a brilliant operational plan and achieved effective unit command and control and attained a decisive victory.

Book Arab Israeli Air Wars 1967 82

Download or read book Arab Israeli Air Wars 1967 82 written by Shlomo Aloni and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Israel's successful strategy of pre-emptive air strikes on Arab airbases in the Six Day War played a critical part in their unprecedented victory. It brought them air supremacy and vast territorial buffer zones: the Sinai Peninsula, The Gaza Strip, the Golan Heights and the West Bank of Jordan, but it did not bring peace. Egypt, with the help of the Soviet Union, masterminded a war of attrition against the Israeli Air Force using the latest missile technology. The USA inevitably took Israel's side and the arrival of F-4s and F-15s helped redress the balance. Israel then held of the Arab attack of October 1973 and won another surprise vicotry in the so-called Yom Kipper War. In spite of peace treaties, hostilities did not cease and in 1982 the conflict moved to Lebanon. This book traces the war in the air between Israel and its Arab neighbours during these troubled years." --Back cover.

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the Six Day War, the Arab-Israeli conflict of 1967, for the purposes of highlighting applications/violations of the principles of war outlined in AFM 1-1. This material will be incorporated into an AGSC block of instruction studying the principles of war as used in famous historical battles. This paper is divided into three separate sections. The first section reviews the background of the Arab-Israeli problem and highlights some of the major events leading up to the war. This section also presents a battle synopsis of the conflict including visual depictions of the battle progress. The second section provides an analysis of the use (or misuse) of the principles of war by each side—Arab and Israeli. The final section provides some discussion questions, with supporting rationale, in a guided discussion format for possible use in a seminar environment. The non-standard format for this project is at the request of ACSC/EDCJ to assist in building this particular block of instruction.

Book The June 1967 Arab Israeli Six Day War

Download or read book The June 1967 Arab Israeli Six Day War written by Tom Cooper and published by Helion and Company. This book was released on 2024-01-20 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1967 Israel, which seemed on the verge of being annihilated by its Arab neighbors, took six days to redraw the Middle Eastern strategic map in one of the most dramatic reversals of fortune in modern times. The success was over a decade in the making following the Suez Crisis, with the Israeli forces being radically changed to create an army and air force upon which the country would rely when it became obvious the international community would take no action to implement guarantees made after the events of 1956. The Israeli forces were honed in low level clashes during the 1960s, notably the Water Wars which the Israelis did so much to provoke. By contrast, the Arab forces became complacent, largely due to supplies of arms from the Warsaw Pact states. With proper training, this complacency could have been turned into military effectiveness but the Arab forces were plagued by internal rivalries and high commands too often depending upon politically reliable officers rather than those who were militarily effective. The Egyptian forces were further undermined by their commitment to the debilitating Yemen Civil War which meant they were in no condition to confront Israel. Syria and Jordan, whose forces could not fight the Israelis alone, complained loudly about President Nasser’s lack of action against Israel. Nasser’s decision in early 1967 to regain the prestige he had lost since the heady days of the Suez Crisis with a demonstration in the Sinai Peninsula was interpreted by the Israelis as preparations for an invasion. Nasser did nothing to persuade them otherwise and when it was clear the international community would do nothing the Israelis decided to strike Egypt, and in turn Syria and Jordan. The Israeli campaign was heralded by a massive surprise air attack first on the Egyptians and then on the other neighboring states, and ground offensives then followed in succession. Volume 1 of The June 1967 Arab-Israeli Six-Day War provides an in-depth background to the long running confrontation between Arab and Jew in the Middle East, a detailed overview of the rival air forces that would become embroiled in the conflict, and an account of the opening Israeli air strikes against Egyptian targets. This volume is illustrated throughout with original photographs and includes specially commissioned full color aircraft profiles.

Book The 1973 Arab Israeli War The Albatross Of Decisive Victory Illustrated Edition

Download or read book The 1973 Arab Israeli War The Albatross Of Decisive Victory Illustrated Edition written by Dr. George W. Gawrych and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes 8 maps and more than 20 illustrations Armies appear to learn more from defeat than victory. In this regard, armed forces that win quickly, decisively, and with relative ease face a unique challenge in attempting to learn from victory. The Israel Defense Forces certainly fell into this category after their dramatic victory over the combined armies of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria in the Six Day War of June 1967. This study analyzes the problems that beset Israel in the aftermath of its decisive victory in the Six Day War over the Arabs. In the 1973 War, Anwar Sadat, Egypt’s president, was able to exploit Israeli vulnerabilities to achieve political success through a limited war. An important lesson emerges from this conflict. A weaker adversary can match his strengths against the weaknesses of a superior foe in a conventional conflict to attain strategic success. Such a strategic triumph for the weaker adversary can occur despite serious difficulties in operational and tactical performance. The author suggests a striking parallel between the military triumphs of Israel in 1967 and the United States in 1991. In both cases, success led to high expectations. The public and the armed forces came to expect a quick and decisive victory with few casualties. In this environment, a politically astute opponent can exploit military vulnerabilities to his strategic advantage. Sadat offers a compelling example of how this can be done.

Book excerpt: This paper examines the Israeli Air Force (IAF) operational art employed during the 1967 Arab-Israeli Six-Day War. Its purpose is to create a blueprint of valuable lessons to guide our nation's future force employment. To set the stage, a short historical compendium of the political environment leading up to the conflict, followed by a summary of the IAF air operation is provided. Given this background, the scope of the operational art analysis is limited to examining the IAF's primary operational objective of establishing air superiority during the first two days of the war. The analytical method to derive major lessons learned will be to sift the elements of operational art employed by the IAF air operation against a screen of the nine enduring principles of war: Objective, Offensive, Mass, Economy of Force, Maneuver, Unity of Command, Simplicity, Security, and Surprise. This analytical framework revealed a golden
