For the first time for many years--more even than he could remember--Israel had a sleepless night, following the day that revolutionised his fortunes. For the first time also, after an equally long interval, did he dream, or at least do the tiling nearest to dreaming that his not very imaginative nature permitted. He gave way to the tide of emotion that flowed in upon him, while letting his thoughts sway hither and thither as they pleased, knowing how easy it was for him to bring them back, and compel them into the appointed channel. He thought of David--his rebellious, and yet timid boy, and as he thought, somehow the lad's instincts as regarded the mine appeared less unmanly and more deserving of attention than before; and he went so far as to speculate as to the possibilities before many years were gone of raising him to be at once a gentleman and a mineowner--as his partner. 'Israel Mort and Son, ' he thought would sound well some day. He thought also of his wife; but that kind of thinking was too much out of his way for Trim to dwell long on it. She was asleep, but he woke her, to ask, 'Do you think old Simon would take twenty pounds a year for that house and garden?' 'Yes. But nobody seems inclined to make him an offer.' 'As soon as you have had your breakfast, go to him and say if he will I think I can find him a tenant.' 'Very well.' Again silence. The wife rose and began to dress. And, again, Israel spake after a little while: --'Barrett has left the neighbourhood and gone far away into Scotland. He has let his house, but hasn't managed to dispose of his furniture, which would cost too much to remove. Set somebody--not yourself, mind, for Barrett hates me--set somebody, I say, to find out the.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Israel Mort, Overman, Vol. 1 of 3: A Story of the Mine The light, which almost needs some other word to express its inconceivable splendour, is at first too dazzling for the spirit-vision to see aught that it can comprehend. And when the eye has grown accustomed to the fierce blaze of sunshine, and to its reflections in the vast and near mirror, the sea, the difficulties, while changing, grow rather than lessen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Israel Mort, Overman, Vol. 3 of 3: A Story of the Mine Every object, however mean or insignificant to others, seemed full of interest for him. At that dingy cottage, with the thatched roof looking in its sodden blackness as if the fingers that put it together must have done their last stroke of work centuries ago, he had once drunk a draught of milk under circumstances that made it seem ever after to him the climax of a boy's felicity in the quenching of thirst. Book Irregular Army

Download or read book Irregular Army written by Matt Kennard and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2012-09-17 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the launch of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars—now the longest wars in American history—the US military has struggled to recruit troops. It has responded, as Matt Kennard’s explosive investigative report makes clear, by opening its doors to neo-Nazis, white supremacists, gang members, criminals of all stripes, the overweight, and the mentally ill. Based on several years of reporting, Irregular Army includes extensive interviews with extremist veterans and leaders of far-right hate groups—who spoke openly of their eagerness to have their followers acquire military training for a coming domestic race war. As a report commissioned by the Department of Defense itself put it, “Effectively, the military has a ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy pertaining to extremism.” Irregular Army connects some of the War on Terror’s worst crimes to this opening-up of the US military. With millions of veterans now back in the US and domestic extremism on the rise, Kennard’s book is a stark warning about potential dangers facing Americans—from their own soldiers.

Book Matthew s New David at the End of Exile

Download or read book Matthew s New David at the End of Exile written by Nicholas G. Piotrowski and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew crowds more Old Testament quotations and allusions into the prologue than anywhere else in his gospel. In this volume, Nicholas G. Piotrowski demonstrates the narratological and rhetorical effects of such frontloading. Particularly, seven formula-quotations constellate to establish a redemptive-historical setting inside of which the rest of the narrative operates. This setting is defined by Old Testament expectations for David’s great son to end Israel’s exile and rule the nations. Piotrowski contends that the rhetorical effect of this intertextual storytelling was to provide the Matthean community with an identity—in a contentious atmosphere—in terms of God’s historical design for the ages, now fulfilled in Jesus and his followers.

Book excerpt: As European empires crumbled in the 20th century, the power structures that had dominated the world for centuries were up for renegotiation. Yet instead of a rebirth for democracy, what emerged was a silent coup – namely, the unstoppable rise of global corporate power. Exposing the origins of this epic power grab as well as its present-day consequences, Silent Coup is the result of two investigative journalist's reports from 30 countries around the world. It provides an explosive guide to the rise of a corporate empire that now dictates how resources are allocated, how territories are governed, and how justice is defined.

Book The Left s Jewish Problem

Download or read book The Left s Jewish Problem written by Dave Rich and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a sickness at the heart of left-wing British politics, and though predominantly below the surface, it is silently spreading, becoming ever more malignant. With three separate inquiries into anti-Semitism in the Labour Party in the first six months of 2016 alone, it seems hard to believe that, until the 1980s, the British left was broadly pro-Israel. And while the election of Jeremy Corbyn may have thrown a harsher spotlight on the crisis, it is by no means a recent phenomenon. The widening gulf between British Jews and the anti-Israel left - born out of antiapartheid campaigns and now allying itself with Islamist extremists who demand Israel's destruction - did not happen overnight or by chance: political activists made it happen. This book reveals who they were, why they chose Palestine and how they sold their cause to the left. Based on new academic research into the origins of this phenomenon, combined with the author's daily work observing political extremism, contemporary hostility to Israel, and anti-Semitism, this book brings new insight to the left's increasingly controversial 'Jewish problem'.
