Book My Trip to the Orient Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Trip to the Orient Classic Reprint written by Alma White and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Trip to the Orient I have tried to take my readers over land and sea, and let them participate in the various experiences on this trip, and enjoy the sights and scenes which continually met my vision. It was in the divine plan for me to see the land promised to Abraham and his seed forever, so that by personal experience and observation I might bring light and truth to others. The Old Testament brims with new life and inspiration, after one has seen Egypt, the land of the Pharaoh's, where God's ancient peo ple were once in bondage. The history of the exodus bridges the flight of ages, and it seems but yesterday since Miriam and Moses sang their song of deliverance on the banks of the Red Sea. The author. Note - The first edition of M y Trip to the Orient was so well received that it was soon exhausted, but owing to the fact that a number of other books had to be printed, and because issues were still unsettled in the great war, it was considered best to pospone the publishing of the second edition, which seems now to have been providential. Through the delay, proof has been furnished to statements made in the first edition concerning the restoration of Israel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Recovery of the Ancient Orient By your kind and flattering invita tion am I come, and by my own choice am I to speak of the only sub ject to which I may claim to have right of public utterance. The field of human knowledge has sensibly wid ened since those large days in 1776, when some of our forebears fought to found a new commonwealth, while others, even amid rumors of war in the distracted colonies, dared to meet and found a learned society.1 They were men who might hope to compass the field of learning as none may dare in these days, least of all one whose whole life has been given to a field circumscribed within narrow limits. Book The Soul of the Orient Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Soul of the Orient Classic Reprint written by Z. L. Cavalier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soul of the Orient IN the far-away ages of the past, in China, Japan, India, Chaldea, and Egypt, the most learned men were set apart for study of the heavenly bodies, and the laws which govern the universe. If astronomy be commended as a study of the stars, why should astrology not be even more important, as the language of the celestial bodies? The very fact that astrologers in various countries are in accord as to the nature and influence of the various planets proves that some of the wisest men in the world have been, and are, believers in the usefulness of astrology. In the Old and New Testament constant allusions are made to the planetary system as it affected or influenced the human race. In Deborah's beautiful song, she, as one of the mothers of Israel, makes special mention (judges v, 20) of the stars in their courses fighting against Sisera. In Revelation xii, I mention is made of the Signs of the Zodiac. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Obvious Orient Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Obvious Orient Classic Reprint written by Albert Bushnell Hart and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Obvious Orient The world abounds in sketchy books upon the East, and the title chosen for this volume is the writer's admission that no one can learn all that there is in the most ancient and inscrutable of the continents in an eight months' experience. On the other hand, the Orient is so unlike the western world that it still has the stimulating effect of novelty and variety. It is astonishing how the books that one reads beforehand on the East fail to include the things which instantly come before the eyes the moment one lands in Asia; even the hasty traveller's record, therefore, adds something to the knowledge of the bewildering and picturesque detail of Oriental life. For this study of the East I have had some advantages in the way of previous investigation and reflection, and the friendship of former students and others now settled in the Orient. Americans in that part of the world never lose their nationality, and the travelling American finds himself welcomed to a partnership in their experiences. Book Ethics in Ancient Israel

Download or read book Ethics in Ancient Israel written by John Barton and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics in Ancient Israel is a study of ethical thinking in ancient Israel from around the eighth to the second century BC. The evidence for this consists primarily of the Old Testament/ Hebrew Bible and Apocrypha, but also other ancient Jewish writings such as the Dead Sea Scrolls and various anonymous and pseudonymous texts from shortly before the New Testament period. Professor John Barton argues that there were several models for thinking about ethics, including a 'divine command' theory, something approximating to natural law, a virtue ethic, and a belief in human custom and convention. Moreover, he examines ideas of reward and punishment, purity and impurity, the status of moral agents and patients, imitation of God, and the image of God in humanity. Barton maintains that ethical thinking can be found not only in laws but also in the wisdom literature, in the Psalms, and in narrative texts. There is much interaction with recent scholarship in both English and German. The book features discussion of comparative material from other ancient Near Eastern cultures and a chapter on short summaries of moral teaching, such as the Ten Commandments. This innovative work should be of interest to those concerned with the interpretation of the Old Testament but also to students of ethics.

The commentary is completely revised, and the introduction in particular is here much extended and addresses fundamental questions regarding the book of Daniel and the apocalyptic movement it inaugurates (with 1 Enoch). Daniel is an indispensable trove and reference about issues like the apocalyptic vision of world's periodized history, the notion of Son of Man, messianism without a messiah, the belief in resurrection, the kingdom of God, the centrifugal spread of divine revelation, and the positive role of the Jewish diaspora. This edition is meant for scholars, college and university researchers, and students of the Bible (of the Old Testament and New Testament) in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Text, Theology, and Trowel consists of ten essays on the understanding and reception of the Hebrew Bible in Judaism and Christianity. Textual exegesis, historical contexts, and modern reception of the Hebrew text are placed side by side to encourage interdisciplinary study. Two theologically minded essays are included to help overcome the biblical studies/theology dichotomy. By placing such divergent approaches together, this volume will help expand ways of thinking about the Bible and its cognate fields.
