Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines a largely neglected phenomenon in the field of international relations--the concept of the isolated state. Deon Geldenhuys begins by discussing how he measures both voluntary and enforced international isolation by, among other things, membership of international organizations, official visits and international censure. He then presents a number of case studies of self-isolation. The remainder of the study is devoted to an analysis of the enforced isolation of Taiwan, Israel, Chile and South Africa. Using a wealth of statistical material, he demonstrates their varying degrees of isolation in the diplomatic, military, economic and socio-cultural arenas of the international community.

Book Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults

Download or read book Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social isolation and loneliness are serious yet underappreciated public health risks that affect a significant portion of the older adult population. Approximately one-quarter of community-dwelling Americans aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated, and a significant proportion of adults in the United States report feeling lonely. People who are 50 years of age or older are more likely to experience many of the risk factors that can cause or exacerbate social isolation or loneliness, such as living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, and sensory impairments. Over a life course, social isolation and loneliness may be episodic or chronic, depending upon an individual's circumstances and perceptions. A substantial body of evidence demonstrates that social isolation presents a major risk for premature mortality, comparable to other risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, or obesity. As older adults are particularly high-volume and high-frequency users of the health care system, there is an opportunity for health care professionals to identify, prevent, and mitigate the adverse health impacts of social isolation and loneliness in older adults. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults summarizes the evidence base and explores how social isolation and loneliness affect health and quality of life in adults aged 50 and older, particularly among low income, underserved, and vulnerable populations. This report makes recommendations specifically for clinical settings of health care to identify those who suffer the resultant negative health impacts of social isolation and loneliness and target interventions to improve their social conditions. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults considers clinical tools and methodologies, better education and training for the health care workforce, and dissemination and implementation that will be important for translating research into practice, especially as the evidence base for effective interventions continues to flourish.

Book Isolated Cases

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nancy Yousef
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2018-07-05
  • ISBN : 1501711385
  • Pages : 268 pages

Download or read book Isolated Cases written by Nancy Yousef and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature of the romantic period has consistently been seen as the source of modern concepts of the individual. Nancy Yousef maintains, however, that the dominant account of the self in romanticism is in need of profound revision. While individuals presented in central texts of the period are indeed often alone or separated from others, Yousef regards this isolation as a problem the texts attempt to illuminate, rather than a condition they construct as normative or desirable. As her argument moves from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, through both philosophical and literary writing, her book offers a new account of autonomy and of the complex romantic inheritance of enlightenment preoccupations with the origins of human association and the course of human development. In her richly interdisciplinary book, Nancy Yousef addresses the emergence of autonomy, demonstrating that the ideal was beset from its beginnings by profound concerns over the possibilities and grounds of human relations and interdependence. Isolated Cases draws attention to the strain of intersubjective anxieties and longings hidden within representations of the individual as self-sufficient and self-defining. Among the writers and thinkers Yousef treats at length are John Locke, John Stuart Mill, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Mary Shelley, and William Wordsworth.

Book Read Out and Coherent Manipulation of an Isolated Nuclear Spin

Download or read book Read Out and Coherent Manipulation of an Isolated Nuclear Spin written by Stefan Thiele and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-26 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis sheds new light on the worldwide first electrical manipulation of a single nuclear spin. Over the last four decades, the size of a bit, the smallest logical unit in a computer, has decreased by more than two orders of magnitude and will soon reach a limit where quantum phenomena become important. Inspired by the power of quantum mechanics, researchers have already identified pure quantum systems, having, analog to a classical bit, two controllable and readable states. In this regard, the inherent spin of electrons or nuclei with its two eigenstates, spin up and spin down, is a promising candidate. Using expertise in the field of single-molecule magnets, the author developed a molecular transistor, which allows quantum information to be written onto a single nuclear spin by means of an electric field only, and, in addition, enables the electronic read-out of this quantum state. This novel approach opens a path to addressing and manipulating individual nuclear spins within a very confined space (a single molecule), at high speed. Thus, the author was able to show that single molecule magnets are promising candidates for quantum information processing, which is triggering a new field of research towards molecular quantum electronics.

Book Elastic Response of Shock isolated Cylinders Buried in a Dense Dry Sand

Download or read book Elastic Response of Shock isolated Cylinders Buried in a Dense Dry Sand written by David C. Foster and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the study was to investigate the elastic response of a stiff, horizontally oriented, steel cylinder backpacked with a low-strength cellular concrete and buried in a dense, dry sand, whose surface was subjected to static and dynamic overpressures. Four series of tests were conducted on the cylinder (one static and one dynamic series without backpacking, and two dynamic series with backpacking). The cylinder had an outside diameter of 6 inches, a 0.120-inch wall thickness, and a stiffness of 164 psi. Static and dynamic surface overpressures ranged from 0 to 250 psi and from 100 to 250 psi, respectively. In the tests with backpacking, a layer of cellular concrete with a thickness of either 1-3/8 or 2-7/8 inches encompassed the cylinder. The cylinder was buried at a depth of 15 inches, which was held constant for all tests. Measurements were made of the strains and accelerations experienced by the cylinder, test chamber bonnet pressure, surface overpressure, and free-field pressure and acceleration. Backpacking reduced the peak strains experienced by the cylinder, and a redistribution of the strains in the cylinder occurred. For all tests utilizing backpacking, the accelerations of the cylinder were reduced to approximately 10 to 50 percent of those measured in corresponding tests without backpacking. (Author).
