Book excerpt: On Thursday as they ate the Passover meal with Jesus, the disciples believed that the kingdom was coming and they were on the front end of a revolution. Then came the tragedy of Friday and, somehow even worse, the silence of Saturday. They ran. They doubted. They despaired. Yet, within the grave, God's power was still flowing like a mighty river beneath the ice of winter. And then there was Sunday morning. Real, raw, and achingly honest, A Glorious Dark meets readers in the ambiguity, doubt, and uncertainty we feel when our beliefs about the world don't match up to reality. Tackling tough questions like Why is faith so hard? Why do I doubt? Why does God allow me to suffer? and Is God really with me in the midst of my pain? A. J. Swoboda puts into sharp focus a faith that is greater than our personal comfort or fulfilment. He invites readers to develop a faith that embraces the tension between what we believe and what we experience, showing that the very tension we seek to eliminate is where God meets us.

Book For Cause and Comrades

    Book Details:
  • Author : James M. McPherson
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1997-04-03
  • ISBN : 9780199741052
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book For Cause and Comrades written by James M. McPherson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-04-03 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General John A. Wickham, commander of the famous 101st Airborne Division in the 1970s and subsequently Army Chief of Staff, once visited Antietam battlefield. Gazing at Bloody Lane where, in 1862, several Union assaults were brutally repulsed before they finally broke through, he marveled, "You couldn't get American soldiers today to make an attack like that." Why did those men risk certain death, over and over again, through countless bloody battles and four long, awful years ? Why did the conventional wisdom -- that soldiers become increasingly cynical and disillusioned as war progresses -- not hold true in the Civil War? It is to this question--why did they fight--that James McPherson, America's preeminent Civil War historian, now turns his attention. He shows that, contrary to what many scholars believe, the soldiers of the Civil War remained powerfully convinced of the ideals for which they fought throughout the conflict. Motivated by duty and honor, and often by religious faith, these men wrote frequently of their firm belief in the cause for which they fought: the principles of liberty, freedom, justice, and patriotism. Soldiers on both sides harkened back to the Founding Fathers, and the ideals of the American Revolution. They fought to defend their country, either the Union--"the best Government ever made"--or the Confederate states, where their very homes and families were under siege. And they fought to defend their honor and manhood. "I should not lik to go home with the name of a couhard," one Massachusetts private wrote, and another private from Ohio said, "My wife would sooner hear of my death than my disgrace." Even after three years of bloody battles, more than half of the Union soldiers reenlisted voluntarily. "While duty calls me here and my country demands my services I should be willing to make the sacrifice," one man wrote to his protesting parents. And another soldier said simply, "I still love my country." McPherson draws on more than 25,000 letters and nearly 250 private diaries from men on both sides. Civil War soldiers were among the most literate soldiers in history, and most of them wrote home frequently, as it was the only way for them to keep in touch with homes that many of them had left for the first time in their lives. Significantly, their letters were also uncensored by military authorities, and are uniquely frank in their criticism and detailed in their reports of marches and battles, relations between officers and men, political debates, and morale. For Cause and Comrades lets these soldiers tell their own stories in their own words to create an account that is both deeply moving and far truer than most books on war. Battle Cry of Freedom, McPherson's Pulitzer Prize-winning account of the Civil War, was a national bestseller that Hugh Brogan, in The New York Times, called "history writing of the highest order." For Cause and Comrades deserves similar accolades, as McPherson's masterful prose and the soldiers' own words combine to create both an important book on an often-overlooked aspect of our bloody Civil War, and a powerfully moving account of the men who fought it.

Book excerpt: Your loss and brokenness could turn into a doorway of discovering how much the sovereign God cares about you. That’s exactly what Mary experienced in grief when her youngest son died as a result of injuries from a car accident. The tragedy led her to review God’s actions in her life in prior experiences, which enabled her to trust in His demonstration of lovingkindness in the grief the family and community experienced. God is the divine Puzzle Maker, putting the pieces of our lives in place, one by one. He is a sovereign God who has the power to plan our lives for His glorious purpose. As we look for evidences of His care and tenderness in very difficult experiences of life as well in the good times, we are drawn in a close love relationship to this awesome God. Grief and loss can be an opportunity to draw us nearer to God. Glorious Puzzle is the account of Mary learning to trust and love God deeply through her experiences of infertility, miscarriage, adoption of a special needs child, career changes, the mental illness and incarceration of her oldest son and the death of her youngest son. Her account challenges us to open our eyes to see God’s hand at work in our hard times and then give Him the honor and praise. It is a story of putting Proverbs 3:5 & 6 into action in everyday life and in times of trial. As God is acknowledged, He frees us to experience joy, draw near to Him, and feel His awesome love for us, and we can respond in grateful service. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” (ESV)

Book No Flesh Shall Glory

Download or read book No Flesh Shall Glory written by Dr. Roberta Morrison and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-05-27 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God does not want us to worship idols but to worship Him. We need to acknowledge the power, presence and authority of God who is at work in our lives. We are a triune being: body, soul and spirit. As God uses us as instruments to the Body of Christ we cant make the mistake and believe that these gifts are ours and others should give us the glory. We have been created by God to worship Him and when we dont we will worship something else. Isaiah 42:8 states I am the Lord; that is My name! And my glory I will not give another, nor My praise to graven images. We need to lift up Jesus. When we lift Jesus up and seek His face then the glory comes. His glory will not come when we are lifting up idols or lifting up a man. We need to return to the basics and the simplicity of the gospel and lift up Jesus. The banner needs to be Jesus. When we deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow Him then His glory shines through us and others are led to Him.
