Book excerpt: Celia Laighton Thaxter (1835-1894) was born in Portsmouth, NH. When she was four, her father became the lighthouse keeper on White Island in the Isles of Shoals. After resigning his post eight years later, he built a resort hotel on Appledore Island in Maine. The first of its kind on the New England coast, the hotel became a gathering place for writers and artists during the latter half of the 19th century. In her last year of life, Celia published this work, in which she lovingly describes her Appledore garden and its flowers. The flowers she grew in her cutting garden filled her own rooms and those of the hotel, and this work became famous for its descriptions of the old-fashioned flowers she grew there. Her island garden, a plot that measured 15 feet square, has been re-created and is open to visitors.

Book excerpt: This is the true story of a double murder that occurred in March, 1873 off the New England coast. The event was followed closely by newspapers across the country for months. It is unique because of the circumstances surrounding the crime and the controversy it raised. Reconstructed from old newspaper articles, court transcripts, the Internet and other source materials, it is as factual as I have been able to make it. Names and places are real, as is trial testimony. Where facts and dialogue were available from research and documented sources, they are accurate. Where they were scant or sustained by rumor yet necessary for the flow of the story and capture of emotions, the interpretations are mine. --author.

While authorities attempt to locate Mrs. Barker, intrepid newspaper reporter Jennifer Malone uncovers information the shooting is possibly related to a new memory wonder drug. Yet the harder she digs, the more twists and turns she unearths. Had Robert found out about Lynn's affair with the presidential candidate - a show guest that fateful morning? Or was it business related, as the candidate is the powerful Chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee that oversees the drug industry? Book The Isles of Shoals Through Time

Download or read book The Isles of Shoals Through Time written by Donald Cann and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are relatively few places in the world where time seems to stand still. Incremental changes have occurred on the Isles of Shoals, but they remain hidden beneath the natural and historical beauty that has been their hallmark since the late 1800s. Old Shoalers such as "Uncle" Oscar Laighton and the famed poet, Celia Thaxter, would still recognize the place today, from the grandeur of the Oceanic Hotel on Star Island and the wilds of Duck Island, to the stoicism of duty-bound White Island Lighthouse. The Isles of Shoals Through Time is a visual journey to this offshore haven, a reflection of summers past and a prediction of summers yet to come. Stepping off the boat at Star, we wander past cottages and monuments. On Appledore Island we witness the rugged, natural beauty that attracted artists of all types. As we cruise through the islands as the sun sets on the Maine and New Hampshire coastlines, we are reminded why visitors return year after year to this timeless place.

Book excerpt: The year is 1929 and Honora Beecher and her husband, Sexton, are just settling into a new marriage and a cottage on the coast of New Hampshire. While Honora fixes up the derelict house and searches for bits of sea glass on the beach, Sexton risks everything they own to buy the house they both love. Along with millions of other Americans, he is blindsided by the stock market crash and finds himself penniless. The only work he can find is at a nearby mill, where a labour conflict is erupting into violence. Shaken by forces they scarcely understand, Honora and Sexton try to build a marriage and home while overwhelmed by passions of every kind. Writing with the power and immediacy that have made her novels bestsellers, Shreve unfolds interlocking lives, each with its own share of love, loss and challenge. This is another gripping and unforgettable story of the human heart from one of the most accomplished novelists of our time.
