Book Islamic Perspective on Charity

Download or read book Islamic Perspective on Charity written by Khalil Jassemm and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tragedy and resulting tempest of September 11, 2001 forever changed the global scope and mechanics of nonprofit organizations in the US and around the world. In the aftermath of this tragedy, the nonprofit world changed forever and all nonprofits found themselves the focus of attention from the government, the media and the public at large. Muslim nonprofits found themselves under intense scrutiny with their operations being under a cloud of suspicion. Unfortunately, a number of large Muslim charities were closed administratively on the basis of what many in the Muslim and Arab community consider weak evidence or no evidence of wrongdoing and without due process. There is a need to educate the public on the concept of Muslim charity, on how Muslim charities operate and to offer a guide on how to operate a successful charity that is professional, open and transparent. Visualizing this need, Dr. Khalil Jassemm, one of the leading figures in the Muslim and Arab NGO sector with more than 15 years of experience, offers the reader a comprehensive guide for understanding Islamic charity and for running a successful nonprofit in the US. By taking the reader through an overview of the concept and significance of charity in Islam in a comparative context and the primary phases of founding, organization, management and practice, this book addresses important issues facing nonprofit organizations operating in the post-9/11 world. Charity work is not simple work. To many in the lay public, charity work is perceived as simply accepting donations and giving that money away. To professionals, it is about properly acquiring the donation, managing it, spending it, and publicizing the work. This book will be an invaluable nonprofit organizational and management reference tool, while also providing a comparative perspective on the act of Islamic charity. Regardless of mission type, this text will provide guidance for all nonprofits to becoming more professional and effective. Thought-provoking and groundbreaking, Islamic Perspective on Charity: A Comprehensive Guide for Running a Muslim Nonprofit in the US is essential reading for anyone interested in learning about the Islamic perspective on charity, how Muslim organizations operate in the US, and how to run a successful nonprofit. We hope for two outcomes from reading this book. We hope this book would make the general reader an informed donor that is aware of Muslim charities and their work, and we pray that this book would be a refresher course to professionals in this field to improve their knowledge and skills.

Book Giving to God

Download or read book Giving to God written by Amira Mittermaier and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giving to God examines the everyday practices of Islamic giving in post-revolutionary Egypt. From foods prepared in Sufi soup kitchens, to meals distributed by pious volunteers in slums, to almsgiving, these acts are ultimately about giving to God by giving to the poor. Surprisingly, many who practice such giving say that they do not care about the poor, instead framing their actions within a unique non-compassionate ethics of giving. At first, this form of giving may appear deeply selfish, but further consideration reveals that it avoids many of the problems associated with the idea of “charity.” Using the Egyptian uprising in 2011 and its call for social justice as a backdrop, this beautifully crafted ethnography suggests that “giving a man a fish” might ultimately be more revolutionary than “teaching a man to fish.”

Book Charity in Islamic Societies

Charitable endowments shaped Muslim societies and cultures in every era. Using written texts, buildings, images and objects to anchor the discussions in each chapter, the author explores the motivations for charity, its impact on the rich and the poor, and the politicisation of charity. Book Social Responsibilities and Human Welfare Developments

Download or read book Social Responsibilities and Human Welfare Developments written by Dr. Sulaiman Lebbe Rifai and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this short article is to highlight and pinpoint the significance of social responsibility and social welfare in Islam. No religion emphasises charity as Islam does. It is even claimed by some orientalists that the concept of charitable work was borrowed by Christians from Islamic traditions. From the formative period of Islam, Muslims started to donate and give abundantly for the sake of Islam. The Prophet Muhammad was an orphan, and his mission was funded and supported by his followers. Giving charity is one of the main pillars of Islam. Muslims are asked to purify their money and wealth by giving a portion of their money and wealth to the poor. Although Qur'an and prophetic traditions give such a prominent place for charity, it can be argued that Islamic charitable organizations are still primitive. Christian organizations and denominations are managed to develop charitable through hundreds of NGOs and other financial organizations and yet, Muslims have failed to develop any systemic organization to give charities. Yet, Muslims give more charities than any other community but not in any organized and methodical way. There are more than 53 Muslim countries in the world and yet, no Muslim country has developed any good systematic system to develop a good welfare system to help the poor and needy in Muslim communities. Muslims are giving to their charities individually even in this digital age. Charities such as Zakat and other Islamic charitable donations are not yet computerised and organised in any cooperative system. This article examines these challenges in this article in comparison with western welfare systems. A simple comparison is made between the social welfare and security systems of the West and Muslim countries to compare similarities and dissimilarities. The main postulate of this short article is that the west's material and socio welfare developments are not unattainable by the Islamic world. Some Muslim countries are rich enough to develop the best social welfare system and yet, political nepotism and autocracy do not allow Muslim economists and policymakers to come up with any fair system. This paper is divided into four parts: a). A brief history of social welfare developments in Britain. b) Islamic concepts of social responsibilities and welfare developments. c) The role of Christian missionaries in social welfare developments. d). The role of Islamic movements in social welfare developments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A free open access ebook is available upon publication. Learn more at www.luminosoa.org. Up to the twentieth century, Islamic charitable endowments provided the material foundation of the Muslim world. In Lebanon, with the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the imposition of French colonial rule, many of these endowments reverted to private property circulating in the marketplace. In contemporary Beirut, however, charitable endowments have resurfaced as mosques, Islamic centers, and nonprofit organizations. A historical anthropology in dialogue with Islamic law, God's Property demonstrates how these endowments have been drawn into secular logics—no longer the property of God but of the Muslim community—and shaped by the modern state and modern understandings of charity and property. Although these transformations have produced new kinds of loyalties and new ways of being in society, Moumtaz’s ethnography reveals the furtive persistence of endowment practices that perpetuate older ways of thinking of one’s self and one’s responsibilities toward family and state.

Book Muslim FBOs Charity and Development Karama Solidarity and The Islamic Cultural Center of Belgium

Download or read book Muslim FBOs Charity and Development Karama Solidarity and The Islamic Cultural Center of Belgium written by Yousuf Daas and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Pedagogy - Science, Theory, Anthropology, grade: 12, Leuven Catholic University, language: English, abstract: This thesis aims to discuss the current Islamic charity landscape in Belgium, and more, specificially, in Brussels. Charity is one of Islam ́s five pillars representing the concept of Islamic humanitarianism, charity is considered an act of giving that generates reciprocity; the cycle of reciprocity in the context of Muslim almsgiving is described under a different giving-act context. This act may also be related to dependency theory. However, any act of giving might create a cyclical relationship between donors and recipients that may, in fact, generate a cycle of dependency. It is noticed, however, that while the literature of development discourse does not focus on the role of Muslim charities, Islamic forms of charity, in turn, are claimed to play an important role in poverty alleviation efforts throughout history. Muslim faith based organization use the Islamic charities to fund their developmental and humanitarian projects; the Muslim community engages with Muslim Faith Based Organizations (FBOs) through the charitable practice. The overall aim of this thesis ist therefore to estimate the degree engagement of the Muslim community with prominent FBOs, namely, Karama Solidarity organization and the Islamic cultural center of Belgium, and on how such engagement actualizes crucial social solidarity; secondly to examine the importance of charity among the Muslim community, and the extent in which it figures as a central principle in Muslim FBOs and amongst Muslims themselves. The following questions will be asked: what are the possible effects on charity in practice? And where is the bulk of charity is going to; Brussels or abroad?

This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering insights and analysis in a field that has only recently come into existence, this book explores the ideals and institutions through which Middle Eastern societies—from the rise of Islam in the seventh century C.E. to the present day—have confronted poverty and the poor. By introducing new sources and presenting familiar ones with new questions, the contributors examine ideas about poverty and the poor, ideals and practices of charity, and state and private initiatives of poor relief over this extensive time span. They avoid easy generalizations about Islam and the Middle East as they seek to set the ideals and practices in comparative perspective.

Book Young Muslim Change Makers

Download or read book Young Muslim Change Makers written by William Barylo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Muslim charity sector is stronger than ever, attracting thousands of volunteers and millions of pounds in donations. In times of mobile internet and social media, young people have set up small scale charities in urban areas, providing general social services to Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Breaking away from bureaucratic non-governmental organisations and traditional faith-based charities, these smaller local associations are an attractive alternative to young people. This book offers an exploration of the Muslim charity sector, from multi-million pound NGOs to discrete grassroots charities who are quietly giving rise to the next generation of Muslim entrepreneurs, scholars, politicians and other influencers. From studies of eleven charities across France, Poland and the UK, it investigates key questions around this young and dynamic movement. What motivates these young Muslim volunteers? What shapes the socially-engaged behaviour of young Muslims? What is the place and the role of Islam in their involvement and commitment to their causes? What social impact do these organisations have in their local area? How do they understand religion, faith, participation and citizenship? What challenges do they face and how do they overcome these? The book also examines how these grassroots are successful in helping to prevent extremism, curb Islamophobia and challenge colonialism. The analysis of these small, local and original initiatives is fundamental in understanding the role of religiosity for these younger generations who are trying to articulate their multiple identities, cultures and traditions in a modern, secular society. Rich, detailed and vivid, the book sheds new lights on a popular field of research, unveiling exclusive key information on the subject of young European Muslims.

Book Human Security and Philanthropy

Download or read book Human Security and Philanthropy written by Samiul Hasan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muslims for hundreds of years have been involved in philanthropic activities targeting poor and needy people through varied types of ‘third sector’ organizations (TSOs). Nonetheless, many people in Muslim majority countries (MMCs), not having freedom from hunger, face human security crises. Not much is known about the TSOs or their human security provisions in MMCs. To fill this knowledge gap, this Volume documents and analyses philanthropy and all types of third sector organizations including the awqaf (Muslim endowments) vis-à-vis human security in MMCs. The study is comprehensive in treating the subject matter (analyzing the legal environment, characteristics, extent and functioning of all forms of the third sector and their human security performances) and in geographic coverage (incorporating all forty-seven Muslim majority countries in Africa and Asia). It is also innovative expounding TSO density analysis, state support score (SSS) and a third-sector capability measure (TCM) to study their interrelationships. It is an essential unique reference book for students and scholars of the third sector and human security, international organizations, development agencies, donor governments, security experts and in particular anybody with interests in Islam and MMCs.

Download or read book Islam and Social Policy written by Stephen P. Heyneman and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when more nuanced understandings of Muslim countries and their legal and social practices are urgently needed in the West, the appearance of this collection is especially welcome. In these illuminating and accessible essays, the contributors explain how Islam sees itself in terms of social policy, how it treats women, and how it encourages charity, education, and general social welfare. The essays encompass many regional cultures and draw on court records and legal debates, field work on government ministries, and an extensive reading of Islamic law. In his overview of waqf (similar to the Western idea of a foundation, in which an endowment is set aside in perpetuity for specified purposes), Ahmad Dallal explains how charity, a central organizing principle in Islam, is itself organized and how waqf, traditionally a source of revenue for charitable purposes, can also become a source of tension and conflict. Donna Lee Bowen, in her essay on the position of women in Islamic law, points out the crucial differences between the Islamic principles of family equity and the Western notion of individual equality. In a subsequent essay, Bowen addresses the problems surrounding family planning and the dilemmas that have arisen within the Muslim world over differing ideas about birth control. The two final essays look at specific instances of how the modern state has treated Islamic social policy. Gail Richardson examines zakat, an Islamic tax used to assist the poor, and its administration in Pakistan. Carol Underwood, meanwhile, explores public health policy in Iran, both before and after the Islamic revolution that deposed the Shah. Addressing some of the most profound misunderstandings between Islamic and Western societies, Islam and Social Policy will be of vital interest not only to scholars and policymakers but to anyone concerned with Islam's critical place in the modern world.
