Book Islamic Education in Indonesia and Malaysia

Download or read book Islamic Education in Indonesia and Malaysia written by Azmil Tayeb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their close geographic and cultural ties, Indonesia and Malaysia have dramatically different Islamic education, with that in Indonesia being relatively decentralized and discursively diverse, while that in Malaysia is centralized and discursively restricted. The book explores the nature of the Islamic education systems in Indonesia and Malaysia and the different approaches taken by these states in managing these systems. The book argues that the post-colonial state in Malaysia has been more successful in centralising its control over Islamic education, and more concerned with promoting a restrictive orthodoxy, compared to the post-colonial state in Indonesia. This is due to three factors: the ideological makeup of the state institutions that oversee Islamic education; patterns of societal Islamisation that have prompted different responses from the states; and control of resources by the central government that influences centre-periphery relations. Informed by the theoretical works of state-in-society relations and historical institutionalism, this book shows that the three aforementioned factors can help a state to minimize influence from the society and exert its dominance, in this case by centralising control over Islamic education. Specifically, they help us understand the markedly different landscapes of Islamic education in Malaysia and Indonesia. It will be of interest to academics in the field of Southeast Asian Studies, Asian Education and Comparative Education.

Book Brunei History Islam Society and Contemporary Issues

Download or read book Brunei History Islam Society and Contemporary Issues written by Ooi Keat Gin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brunei, although a relatively small state, is disproportionately important on account of its rich resource base. In addition, in recent years the country has endeavoured to play a greater role in regional affairs, especially through ASEAN, holding the chair of the organisation in 2013, and also beyond the region, fostering diplomatic, political, economic and educational ties with many nations. This book presents much new research and new thinking on a wide range of issues concerning Brunei largely drawn from Bruneian academics. Subjects covered include Brunei’s rich history – the sultanate formerly had much more extensive territories and was a key player in regional affairs; the country’s economy, politics, society and ethnicities; and resource issues and international relations.

This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sabah's 2020 election was Malaysia's pandemic election. While attention has centred on the impact the election had on the increase of COVID-19, this collection brings together scholars, journalists and social scientists who were on the ground on Sabah to analyse what happened, why, and the broader implications of the outcome for Sabah and Malaysian politics. The book is the first in-depth study of a Sabah election. It is multidisciplinary, with authors from different perspectives, and the majority of the authors are from Sabah. Traditional explanations prioritize the federal-state relationship in shaping Sabah politics. This collection challenges this paradigm, suggesting that politics in Sabah should be better understood as a reflection of conditions within Sabah—as Sabahans struggle to navigate and survive on Malaysia's periphery.

Book Borneo Studies in History Society and Culture

Download or read book Borneo Studies in History Society and Culture written by Victor T. King and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book is the first major review of what has been achieved in Borneo Studies to date. Chapters in this book situate research on Borneo within the general disciplinary fields of the social sciences, with the weight of attention devoted to anthropological research and related fields such as development studies, gender studies, environmental studies, social policy studies and cultural studies. Some of the chapters in this book are extended versions of presentations at the Borneo Research Council’s international conference hosted by Universiti Brunei Darussalam in June 2012 and a Borneo Studies workshop organised in Brunei in 2012. The volume examines some of the major debates and controversies in Borneo Studies, including those which have served to connect post-war research on Borneo to wider scholarship. It also assesses some of the more recent contributions and interests of locally based researchers in universities and other institutions in Borneo itself. The major strength of the book is the inclusion of a substantial amount of research undertaken by scholars working and teaching within the Southeast Asian region. In particular there is an examination of research materials published in the vernacular, notably the outpouring of work published in Indonesian by the Institut Dayakologi in Pontianak. In doing so, the book also addresses the urgent matters which have not received the attention they deserve, specifically subjects, themes and issues that have already been covered but require further contemplation, elaboration and research, and the scope for disciplinary and multidisciplinary collaboration in Borneo Studies. The book is a valuable resource and reference work for students and researchers interested in social science scholarship on Borneo, and for those with wider interests in Indonesia and Malaysia, and in the Southeast Asian region.

Book Borneo in the Cold War 1950 1990

Download or read book Borneo in the Cold War 1950 1990 written by Keat Gin Ooi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although by about 1950 both British Borneo, including the protected sultanate of Brunei, and Indonesian Borneo seemed settled under their different regimes and well on the way to post-war reconstruction and economic development, the upheavals which affected Southeast and East Asia during the Cold War period also deeply affected Borneo. Besides the impact of the Korean and Vietnam Wars and the Malayan Emergency and communist uprisings in other Southeast Asian states, there was within Borneo the attempted communist takeover of Sarawak from the 1950s, a failed coup d’état in Brunei in 1962, Sukarno’s Konfrontasi (confrontation) with Malaysia, and the horrific purge of Leftists and ethnic Chinese in the late 1960s. This book details these momentous events and assesses their impact on Borneo and its people. It is a sequel to the author’s earlier books The Japanese Occupation of Borneo, 1941-1945 (2011) and Post-War Borneo, 1945-1950: Nationalism, Empire, and State-Building (2013), collectively a trilogy.

Book Traditional Malay Monarchy

Download or read book Traditional Malay Monarchy written by Haji Awg Asbol bin Haji Mail and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-19 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable book brings to an English-speaking audience detailed scholarship originally conceived and written in the Malay language and with a Malay perspective. It examines the nature of monarchy in the Malay world, which includes present-day Malaysia and Indonesia, before and during the onset of Western colonialism when the Malay world was ruled by a large number of separate Muslim sultanates. It highlights that monarchs were the highest authority in the social, political, legal and economic system, rather than the government of a clearly defined territory; the notion of Dewaraja (god-king) and what a model monarch’s attributes should be; and how the monarch’s role related to Islamic principles, including the Islamic ideal of the Caliph of God meting out fair judgement and punishment. Two prominent and pivotal concepts of traditional Malay society, that of daulat (sovereignty) and derhaka (disloyalty) are here analysed and evaluated against the background of the period of absolute monarchy. Moreover, this volume also discusses the parts played by leading ministers and viziers, who often exercised enormous power, explores the role of monarchs in managing and regulating economic activity, and outlines differences between the different sultanates.

Download or read book CONVERGENCE written by Shireen Naziree and published by Galeri PETRONAS. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progressive societies place emphasis on the holistic development of its people in the cultivation of mind, body, soul and spirit. Throughout history, great civilizations are marked not only by material wealth but also the flourishing of artistic and cultural expressions. PETRONAS’ role as custodian of the country’s oil and gas resources encompasses its mission to develop and add value to Malaysia’s petroleum assets while contributing to the wellbeing of the people and nation. In support of this principle of holistic development, PETRONAS is privileged to play its part in supporting arts and culture through GALERI PETRONAS as part of its greater commitment to the development of people of Malaysia. In this respect, GALERI PETRONAS as an important icon in the Malaysian art landscapes, provides crucial arts engagement platform for Malaysian artists and audiences. Since its inception GALERI PETRONAS has given continuous support for the development of emerging Malaysian artists, art practices and expertise in art support infrastructure. PETRONAS believe that by uplifting our Malaysian heritage of arts through GALERI PETRONAS, we would inspire Malaysians to greater appreciation and awareness of the beauty and value inherent in our own artistic heritage. We also encourage the appreciation of arts and culture from different societies, as our philosophy centers on the promotion of a holistic individual and a progressive society able to interact as a global citizen. Therefore, our arts and culture programmes promote the sharing of traditions of various peoples and timeframes – blending East and West, modern and traditional. Arts and culture are dynamic elements, and while we seek to preserve them in their pure and authentic state, we also work to develop a new generation of practitioners who refine and find new applications for the arts, to create political and social awareness, for healing and wellness, to spark creativity, intelligence and imagination; to promote unity and harmony through greater understanding of our cultural identities and appreciation of the beauty in each other’s customs and traditions. In this manner, the PETRONAS Art Collection has brought together traditional and contemporary artworks by established and emerging Malaysian artists and artworks of different mediums, such as textiles, crafts, sculptures, paintings, and photography, which are displayed and documented to create awareness and develop appreciation of the richness of Malaysian visual arts. Over the last few decades the PETRONAS corporate art collection has grown considerably to include works from Malaysia’s modern masters and as a corporate gallery, it would be a difficult and challenging undertaking to exhibit our complete collection to the public and art enthusiast. With the publication of the book; Convergence: Past, Reality and Future, it is hoped that we are able to widen the accessibility of our PETRONAS Art Collection to the people. Equally important is the pursuit of art development in Malaysia. A key component to this endeavour is the research and writing efforts that culminates into a book publication. These scholastic efforts in turn greatly assist the students of art where the publication will serve as a repository for future references and hopefully new knowledge. PETRONAS wishes to add our contribution through the publication of Convergence: Past, Reality and Future to this noble and sustainable cause. We hope that the publication Convergence: Past, Reality and Future will further make art in its various forms more accessible to the general public and will touch the lives of Malaysians from all walks of life, and nurture a more sophisticated, culturally-aware and enlightened society. It is also our hope that the publication would be a good addition to the growing publication on Malaysia fine arts. Lastly, the book is our effort to recognize the Malaysian artistic talents and salutes these artistic standards that have grown in tandem with the growth of Malaysia as a nation.

Book Encountering Islam

  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN : 9814379921
  • Pages : 413 pages

Download or read book Encountering Islam written by Yew-Foong Hui and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2013 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume seeks to introduce and deepen the understanding of Islam and its role in politics as encountered in different national and transnational contexts in Southeast Asia, eschewing the neo-orientalist approach that has informed public discourse in recent years. In Encountering Islam, the book lingers beyond the summary moment and reflects on the multiple impressions, suppressions and repressions, whether coherent or incoherent, associated with Islam as a socio-political force in public life. To this end, it is not adequate simply to represent the divergent identities associated with Islam in Southeast Asia, whether embedded in state-endorsed orthodoxy or Islamic movements that contest such orthodoxy. It is also important to examine religious minorities in political contexts where Islam is dominant and Muslim communities in national contexts where they are minorities. By situating these religious identities within their larger socio-political contexts, this volume seeks to provide a more holistic understanding of what is encountered as Islam in Southeast Asia.
