Writers, critics and scholars from Southeast Asia, South Asia, Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, North America and Britain addressed some of the major contemporary literary issues, including the ""Other and I"", the formation of identity in two or more cultures, the loss and recovery of tradition, the re-creation of meaning, and the re-writing of literary paradigms and history. A central impetus is the concern with the importance and fullness of ""I"" when it is ""the Other"". This is linked to challenges posed by the rich varieties of other worlds."

Book The Politics of English as a World Language

Download or read book The Politics of English as a World Language written by Christian Mair and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2003 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complex politics of English as a world language provides the backdrop both for linguistic studies of varieties of English around the world and for postcolonial literary criticism. The present volume offers contributions from linguists and literary scholars that explore this common ground in a spirit of open interdisciplinary dialogue. Leading authorities assess the state of the art to suggest directions for further research, with substantial case studies ranging over a wide variety of topics - from the legitimacy of language norms of lingua franca communication to the recognition of newer post-colonial varieties of English in the online OED. Four regional sections treat the Caribbean (including the diaspora), Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and Australasia and the Pacific Rim. Each section maintains a careful balance between linguistics and literature, and external and indigenous perspectives on issues. The book is the most balanced, complete and up-to-date treatment of the topic to date.

Tadiar probes the consequences of dominant Philippine imaginations by examining a broad range of phenomena which characterize the contemporary Philippine nation, including the mass migration overseas of domestic workers, the 'prostitution economy', urban restructuring, the popular revolt toppling the Marcos dictatorship, as well as various works of art, poetry, historiography, and film. Book The MacArthur Highway and Other Relics of American Empire in the Philippines

Download or read book The MacArthur Highway and Other Relics of American Empire in the Philippines written by Joseph P. McCallus and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-04-30 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been more than a century since the American conquest and subsequent annexation of the Philippines. Although the nation was given its independence in 1946, American cultural authority remains. In order to locate and lend significance to the relics of American empire, Joseph McCallus retraces the route Gen. Douglas MacArthur took during his liberation of the country from the Japanese in 1944 and 1945. While following MacArthur's footsteps, he provides a historical and geographical account of this iconic soldier's military career, accompanied by a description of the contemporary Philippine landscape. McCallus uses the past and the present to explore how America influenced the country's political and educational systems and language, as well as the ramifications of the continued U.S. military presence and the effects of globalization on traditional Filipino society. He examines the American influence on its architecture and introduces to the reader the American expatriate business community—people who have lived in the Philippines for decades and continue to help shape the nation. The MacArthur Highway and Other Relics of American Empire in the Philippines is an absorbing look at how American military intervention and colonial rule have indelibly shaped a nation decades after the fact.

Book Beyond the Nation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Martin Joseph Ponce
  • Publisher : NYU Press
  • Release : 2012-02-01
  • ISBN : 0814768075
  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book Beyond the Nation written by Martin Joseph Ponce and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the American Literatures Initiative Series Beyond the Nation charts an expansive history of Filipino literature in the U.S., forged within the dual contexts of imperialism and migration, from the early twentieth century into the twenty-first. Martin Joseph Ponce theorizes and enacts a queer diasporic reading practice that attends to the complex crossings of race and nation with gender and sexuality. Tracing the conditions of possibility of Anglophone Filipino literature to U.S. colonialism in the Philippines in the early twentieth century, the book examines how a host of writers from across the century both imagine and address the Philippines and the United States, inventing a variety of artistic lineages and social formations in the process. Beyond the Nation considers a broad array of issues, from early Philippine nationalism, queer modernism, and transnational radicalism, to music-influenced and cross-cultural poetics, gay male engagements with martial law and popular culture, second-generational dynamics, and the relation between reading and revolution. Ponce elucidates not only the internal differences that mark this literary tradition but also the wealth of expressive practices that exceed the terms of colonial complicity, defiant nationalism, or conciliatory assimilation. Moving beyond the nation as both the primary analytical framework and locus of belonging, Ponce proposes that diasporic Filipino literature has much to teach us about alternative ways of imagining erotic relationships and political communities.

Book Deconstruction After All

Download or read book Deconstruction After All written by Christopher Norris and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of interviews, reflections, and creative criticism presents Christopher Norris's vigorous polemics with Hayden White, Michel Foucault, Jean Baudrillard, Jean-Francois Lyotard, Thomas Kuhn, Emmanuel Levinas, Pierre Bourdieu, Richard Rorty, and Stanley Fish. Alongside Norris's uncompromising critiques there emerge passages of close and careful reading of Jacques Derrida's texts, as he cites and reiterates Derrida's philosophical contexts in the works of Immanuel Kant, Gaston Bachelard, and Georges Canguilhem, and in the current discursive fields of epistemology and philosophy of science. The book also offers a coda of essays on Frank Kermode, Terry Eagleton, and Terence Hawkes. This collection, prefaced with the author's own academic memoir, provides an accessible and provocative introduction to Norris's critical thought, and highlights the wide range of his interests and philosophical engagements.
