Book Locally Mixed Symmetric Spaces

Download or read book Locally Mixed Symmetric Spaces written by Bruce Hunt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-04 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do the classification of algebraic surfaces, Weyl's dimension formula and maximal orders in central simple algebras have in common? All are related to a type of manifold called locally mixed symmetric spaces in this book. The presentation emphasizes geometric concepts and relations and gives each reader the "roter Faden", starting from the basics and proceeding towards quite advanced topics which lie at the intersection of differential and algebraic geometry, algebra and topology. Avoiding technicalities and assuming only a working knowledge of real Lie groups, the text provides a wealth of examples of symmetric spaces. The last two chapters deal with one particular case (Kuga fiber spaces) and a generalization (elliptic surfaces), both of which require some knowledge of algebraic geometry. Of interest to topologists, differential or algebraic geometers working in areas related to arithmetic groups, the book also offers an introduction to the ideas for non-experts.

Book Geometric Methods in Physics

Download or read book Geometric Methods in Physics written by Piotr Kielanowski and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Białowieża Workshops on Geometric Methods in Physics, which are hosted in the unique setting of the Białowieża natural forest in Poland, are among the most important meetings in the field. Every year some 80 to 100 participants from both the mathematics and physics world join to discuss new developments and to exchange ideas. The current volume was produced on the occasion of the 32nd meeting in 2013. It is now becoming a tradition that the Workshop is followed by a School on Geometry and Physics, which consists of advanced lectures for graduate students and young researchers. Selected speakers at the 2013 Workshop were asked to contribute to this book, and their work was supplemented by additional review articles. The selection shows that, despite its now long tradition, the workshop remains at the cutting edge of research. The 2013 Workshop also celebrated the 75th birthday of Daniel Sternheimer, and on this occasion the discussion mainly focused on his contributions to mathematical physics such as deformation quantization, Poisson geometry, symplectic geometry and non-commutative differential geometry.

Book Global Analysis and Harmonic Analysis

Download or read book Global Analysis and Harmonic Analysis written by Jean-Pierre Bourguignon and published by Société Mathématique de France. This book was released on 2000 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings of a meeting intended to gather researchers working in the fields of harmonic analysis and global analysis to discuss some questions of common interest. About twenty talks covered the principal topics, illustrating the recent interactions between these two fields. The meeting started with a survey on spin geometry and was followed by talks on the spectrum of the Dirac operator in hyperbolic, Kahlerian and pseudo-Riemannian geometry. Different aspects of representation theory were discussed: Schubert cells, unitary representations with reflection symmetry, gradient operators, and Poisson transformations. Another series of talks was devoted to the systematic use of representation theory in global analysis; in particular on the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand sequences in parabolic geometry, the construction of conformally covariant operators, and some refinements of the Kato inequality in Riemannian geometry. Various presentations ranging from general relativity to harmonic maps, by way of $4$-dimensional geometry/topology, Seiberg-Witten theory and the index theorem in $2$-dimensional hyperbolic geometry illustrated the diversity of applications of techniques from harmonic analysis.

Book Differential Geometry and Symmetric Spaces

Download or read book Differential Geometry and Symmetric Spaces written by Sigurdur Helgason and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2024-04-05 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sigurdur Helgason's Differential Geometry and Symmetric Spaces was quickly recognized as a remarkable and important book. For many years, it was the standard text both for Riemannian geometry and for the analysis and geometry of symmetric spaces. Several generations of mathematicians relied on it for its clarity and careful attention to detail. Although much has happened in the field since the publication of this book, as demonstrated by Helgason's own three-volume expansion of the original work, this single volume is still an excellent overview of the subjects. For instance, even though there are now many competing texts, the chapters on differential geometry and Lie groups continue to be among the best treatments of the subjects available. There is also a well-developed treatment of Cartan's classification and structure theory of symmetric spaces. The last chapter, on functions on symmetric spaces, remains an excellent introduction to the study of spherical functions, the theory of invariant differential operators, and other topics in harmonic analysis. This text is rightly called a classic.

Book Loops in Group Theory and Lie Theory

Download or read book Loops in Group Theory and Lie Theory written by Péter Nagy and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-06-24 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the theory of binary systems is considered as a part of group theory and, in particular, within the framework of Lie groups. The novelty is the consequent treatment of topological and differentiable loops as topological and differentiable sections in Lie groups. The interplay of methods and tools from group theory, differential geometry and topology, symmetric spaces, topological geometry, and the theory of foliations is what gives a special flavour to the results presented in this book. It is the first monograph devoted to the study of global loops. So far books on differentiable loops deal with local loops only. This theory can only be used partially for the theory of global loops since non-associative local structures have, in general, no global forms. The text is addressed to researchers in non-associative algebra and foundations of geometry. It should prove enlightening to a broad range of readers, including mathematicians working in group theory, the theory of Lie groups, in differential and topological geometry, and in algebraic groups. The authors have produced a text that is suitable not only for a graduate course, but also for selfstudy in the subjectby interested graduate students. Moreover, the material presented can be used for lectures and seminars in algebra, topological algebra and geometry.

Book Topological Methods in Algebraic Transformation Groups

Download or read book Topological Methods in Algebraic Transformation Groups written by Kraft and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been increasing interest and activity in the area of group actions on affine and projective algebraic varieties. Tech niques from various branches of mathematics have been important for this study, especially those coming from the well-developed theory of smooth compact transformation groups. It was timely to have an interdisciplinary meeting on these topics. We organized the conference "Topological Methods in Alg~braic Transformation Groups," which was held at Rutgers University, 4-8 April, 1988. Our aim was to facilitate an exchange of ideas and techniques among mathematicians studying compact smooth transformation groups, alge braic transformation groups and related issues in algebraic and analytic geometry. The meeting was well attended, and these Proceedings offer a larger audience the opportunity to benefit from the excellent survey and specialized talks presented. The main topics concerned various as pects of group actions, algebraic quotients, homogeneous spaces and their compactifications. The meeting was made possible by support from Rutgers University and the National Science Foundation. We express our deep appreciation for this support. We also thank Annette Neuen for her assistance with the technical preparation of these Proceedings.
