Book Is There a Brain Drain in Auditing The Determinants and Consequences of Auditors Leaving Public Accounting

Download or read book Is There a Brain Drain in Auditing The Determinants and Consequences of Auditors Leaving Public Accounting written by W. Robert Knechel and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates why auditors leave public accounting and the consequences of auditor departures. We find that audit competency is negatively associated with a departure decision. Specifically, audit partners and managers, as well as auditors generating more audit revenues and providing higher quality audits, have a lower likelihood of departure. However, female, young, non-Big 4 auditors, and those with better educational backgrounds have a higher likelihood of departing public accounting. In terms of consequences, we find that the audit firm is more likely to lose clients whose incumbent auditor departs. Clients that stay with the same firm, however, pay lower audit fees with no drop off of audit quality after their auditor's departure. In supplementary analyses, we also demonstrate that the determinants and consequences of auditor departures are different from those of auditor turnover. Specifically, while higher audit competency decreases the likelihood of auditor departures, it increases auditor turnover. Our study provides insights that should be of interest to the audit profession, audit firms, and regulators.

Book Auditor Going Concern Reporting

Download or read book Auditor Going Concern Reporting written by Marshall A. Geiger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-09 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Auditor reporting on going-concern-related uncertainties remains one of the most challenging issues faced by external auditors. Business owners, market participants and audit regulators want an early warning of impending business failure. However, companies typically do not welcome audit opinions indicating uncertainty regarding their future viability. Thus, the auditor’s decision to issue a "going concern opinion" (GCO) is a complex and multi-layered one, facing a great deal of tension. Given such a rich context, academic researchers have examined many facets related to an auditor’s decision to issue a GCO. This monograph reviews and synthesizes 182 recent GCO studies that have appeared since the last significant review published in 2013 through the end of 2019. The authors categorize studies into the three broad areas of GCO: (1) determinants, (2) accuracy and (3) consequences. As an integral part of their synthesis, they summarize the details of each study in several user-friendly tables. After discussing and synthesizing the research, they present a discussion of opportunities for future research, including issues created or exacerbated as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic. This monograph will be of assistance to researchers interested in exploring this area of auditor responsibility. It will also be of interest to auditing firms and individual practitioners wanting to learn what academic research has examined and found regarding this challenging aspect of audit practice. Auditing standard-setters and regulators will find it of interest as the authors review numerous studies examining issues related to audit policy and regulation, and their effects on GCO decisions. The examination of GCO research is extremely timely given the financial and business disruption caused by the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. This unprecedented global event has caused companies, auditors and professional bodies to revisit and reassess their approach to going concern, and to think even more deeply about this fundamental business imperative.

Book Determinants and Market Consequences of Auditor Dismissals After Accounting Restatements

Download or read book Determinants and Market Consequences of Auditor Dismissals After Accounting Restatements written by Karen M. Hennes and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the conditions under which financial restatements lead corporate boards to dismiss external auditors and how the market responds to those dismissal announcements. We find that auditors are more likely to be dismissed after more severe restatements but that the severity effect is primarily attributable to the dismissal of non-Big 4 auditors rather than Big 4 auditors. We also document that among corporations with Big 4 auditors, those that are larger and more complex operationally are less likely to dismiss their auditors. Combined, this evidence suggests that firms with higher switching costs and fewer replacement auditor choices are less likely to dismiss their auditors after a restatement, which is informative to the debates about the costs and benefits of mandatory auditor rotation and limited competition in the audit market. Additionally, we examine contemporaneous executive turnover and find evidence that boards view auditor dismissals as complementary rather than substitute responses to restatements. Finally, we investigate the market reaction to auditor dismissals after restatements. The market reaction to the dismissal is significantly more positive following more severe restatements (5.9%) relative to less severe restatements (0.6%) when the client engages a comparably sized auditor. This positive market reaction is consistent with firms restoring financial reporting credibility by replacing their auditors and highlights the important role that auditors play in the financial markets.

Book Determinants and Consequences of Auditor Conservatism

Download or read book Determinants and Consequences of Auditor Conservatism written by Essam Elshafie and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lu and Sapra (2009) provide a theoretical framework to investigate the causes and effects of auditor conservatism. They refer to the attestation of an auditor who, when in doubt, disapproves a favorable client report as auditor conservatism. In this paper I examine several factors that affect auditor conservatism. The majority of the extant research in this area uses accounting conservatism measures, such as the level of discretionary accruals or the Basu (1997) model to measure auditor conservatism. In this paper I use a new measure of auditor conservatism based on issuing an adverse internal control report for clients with no financial statements restatements, and I examine the effect of client's business risk, litigation risk, and client pressure on auditor conservatism. In addition, I examine the effect auditor conservatism has on information risk and audit fees. Data are collected over the period of 2004 to 2012, from Audit Analytics, Compustat, the Stanford Securities Class Action Clearinghouse website, and CRSP. The results show that auditor conservatism is positively affected by client business risk and the litigation risk, and negatively affected by client pressure. In addition, the results show that auditor conservatism reduces the information asymmetry and leads to an increase in audit fees.

Book Unaccountable

Download or read book Unaccountable written by Mike Brewster and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-10-21 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Role of the Auditor General in Public Accountability

Download or read book Role of the Auditor General in Public Accountability written by Bronwynn Adamson Nosworthy and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research seeks to examine the issue of lack of staff resources within the office of the Auditor-General of NSW, with reference to the Australian Audit Office (AAO). In particular, the lack of staff resources and the implications given the changes which have occurred sine the 1970Ís, when efficiency audit responsibilities were introduced into the public accounting sector auditing, are examined. The present responsibilities to conduct not only regularity/compliance audits but also efficiency audits, coupled with the increasing complexities within the public sector, have placed significant pressure upon the staff resources within the offices of the Auditor's-General. The intention of the research is to provide empirical evidence of these changes on the utilization of staff resources. The Auditor General now, has responsibility for the conduct of firstly, regularity/compliance audits, which are required by mandate and, secondly, efficiency audits, which are left to the discretion of the Auditor-General. The latter are expected because these audits result in more achievements in the process of accountability via special reports to the Parliament. With these changes many problems have been identified. These include: increased workloads due to the wider charter accompanied by less relative resources, loss of staff resources to the private sector and other government departments, the ambiguous relationship between the Auditor-General and the executive government. The executive government is a client of the Auditor-General's, but also determines funding levels, lack of public awareness of the importance of government auditing, little agreement with what efficiency auditing actually means, as this is not defined by the Act. Restraints placed upon the Auditor-General by the government, by way of budgets, are not designed to restrain the independence of the Auditor-General, but do so in reality.

Book Determinants of Low Balling of Audit Fees and Subsequent Recovery

Download or read book Determinants of Low Balling of Audit Fees and Subsequent Recovery written by Myojung Cho and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Auditors' low-balling in initial engagements is a longstanding concern for regulators and others. We examine the determinants and consequences of low-balling using more recent data. We provide evidence that auditors are likely to low-ball if they are “Big N” auditors, expect future revenues from non-audit services, or are quoting large, profitable, and important clients. Further, low-balling auditors tend to recoup their initial fee discounts in subsequent periods via increases in audit and non-audit fees. We also find that clients of low-balling auditors are more likely to restate in the subsequent period. Our findings suggest that low-balling is associated with greater future economic dependence on the client and have implications for auditor independence and audit quality.

The roles played by accountants and auditors, the standard-setting and oversight processes, the history, function, and current status of the discipline itself--all are treated systematically and with candor. Clarifying our understanding of what is wrong and what is right with accounting in the context of public interest, the author probes questions of public policy and shows where correction, standardization, and legislation are needed. He reviews solutions advanced by the courts, the Internal Revenue Service, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and researchers in other fields, then offers his own constructive suggestions.

Book The Audit Market Effects of Disputing a GAAP Deficient PCAOB Inspection Report

Download or read book The Audit Market Effects of Disputing a GAAP Deficient PCAOB Inspection Report written by Lawrence J. Abbott and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of its charter, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) has the authority to inspect and review the workpapers of all accounting firms that provide auditing services to publicly-traded companies. The PCAOB summarizes their findings in publicly-available inspection reports available on its website. Prior research suggests that the accessibility, variation and source creditability of the inspection reports creates a publicly-available audit quality signal that is used by various auditor choice stakeholders. This is particularly true for triennially-inspected auditors that receive a GAAP-deficient report. In a GAAP-deficient inspection report, the PCAOB alleges that the auditor failed to identify departures from generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) in the clients' financial statements. In this paper, we investigate whether and to what extent the auditor's response - which is also encapsulated in the inspection report - impacts the reaction to GAAP-deficient inspection reports. Using a sample of 59 GAAP-deficient auditors and their 466 audit clients, we find auditors that dispute the PCAOB findings are less likely to be dismissed by their audit clients and that this effect is magnified when a client has a CPA on its audit committee. Collectively, our results indicate that auditor choice stakeholders weigh both the PCAOB- and auditor-assessments of auditor performance.

Book Statutory Auditors Independence in Protecting Stakeholders Interest

Download or read book Statutory Auditors Independence in Protecting Stakeholders Interest written by Mitrendu Narayan Roy and published by Palgrave MacMillan. This book was released on 2019-09-08 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
