Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature and function of language as Man's chief vehicle of communi cation occupies a focal position in the human sciences, particularly in philosophy. The concept of 'communication' is problematic because it suggests both 'meaning' (the nature of language) and the activity of speaking (the function of language). The philosophic theory of 'speech acts' is one attempt to clarify the ambiguities of 'speech' as both the use of language to describe states of affair and the process in which that description is generated as 'communication'. The present study, Speech Act Phenomenology, is in part an exam ination of speech act theory. The theory offers an explanation for speech performance, that is, the structure of speech acts as 'relationships' and the content of speech acts as 'meaning'. The primary statement of the speech act theory that is examined is that presented by Austin. A seconda ry concern is the formulation of the theory as presented by Searle and Grice. The limitations of the speech act theory are specified by applying the theory as an explanation of 'human communication'. This conceptual examination of 'communication' suggests that the philosophic method of 'analysis' does not resolve the antinomy of language 'nature' and 'function'. Basically, the conceptual distinctions of the speech act theory (i. e. locutions, illocutions, and perlocutions) are found to be empty as a comprehensive explanation of the concept 'communication'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a wide-ranging approach rare in jazz criticism, Ted Gioia's brilliant volume draws upon fields as disparate as literary criticism, art history, sociology, and aesthetic philosophy in order to place jazz within the turbulent cultural environment of the twentieth century. He argues that because improvisation--the essence of jazz--must often fail under the pressure of on-the-spot creativity, we should view jazz as an "imperfect art" and base our judgments of it on an "aesthetics of imperfection." Incorporating the thought of such seminal thinkers as Walter Benjamin, José Ortega y Gasset, and Roland Barthes, The Imperfect Art offers vivid portraits of the giants of jazz and startling insights into this vital musical form and the interaction of society and art.

Book The Speeds of Light

Download or read book The Speeds of Light written by Harry H. Mark and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves to update knowledge about light with the help of new actual data derived from the easily reproducible experiments described therein. They form the basis of a new theory that interprets up-to-date verifiable information according to the various speeds of the lights involved. In view of recent rapid advances in technology, one may be surprised to learn that at least two of the basic tenets of optics are over a thousand years old, namely the law of reflection, over two millennia old, and the law of reciprocity, which has not changed for over a thousand years. The aim of this treatise is to update our knowledge about light with the help of new actual data derived from easily reproducible experiments. Since light is in space and requires time for its motion, these terms are defined as the basis of actual new observations. Similarly, the second chapter furnishes a brief historical background. The chapter "Light Speed in Media" reports relevant new and old experiments with up-to-date interpretations while "Speeds in Space" examines anew light's general motions in space.
