Book excerpt: This book discusses the different understandings of 'catholicity' that emerged in the interactions between the Church of England and other churches - particularly the Roman Catholic Church and later the Old Catholic Churches - from the early 1830s to the early 1880s. It presents a pre-history of ecumenism, which isolates some of the most distinctive features of the ecclesiological positions of the different churches as these developed through the turmoil of the nineteenth century. It explores the historical imagination of a range of churchmen and theologians, who sought to reconstruct their churches through an encounter with the past whose relevance for the construction of identity in the present went unquestioned. The past was no foreign country but instead provided solutions to the perceived dangers facing the church of the present. Key protagonists are John Henry Newman and Edward Bouverie Pusey, the leaders of the Oxford Movement, as well as a number of other less well-known figures who made their distinctive mark on the relations between the churches. The key event in reshaping the terms of the debates between the churches was the Vatican Council of 1870, which put an end to serious dialogue for a very long period, but which opened up new avenues for the Church of England and other non-Roman European churches including the Orthodox. In the end, however, ecumenism was halted in the 1880s by an increasingly complex European situation and an energetic expansion of the British Empire, which saw the rise of Pan-Anglicanism at the expense of ecumenism.
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of John Henry Newman written by Frederick D. Aquino and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Henry Newman (1801-1890) has always inspired devotion. Newman has made disciples as leader of the Catholic revival in the Church of England, an inspiration to fellow converts to Roman Catholicism, a nationally admired preacher and prose-writer, and an internationally recognized saint of the Catholic Church. Nevertheless, he has also provoked criticism. The church authorities, both Anglican and Catholic, were often troubled by his words and deeds, and scholars have disputed his arguments and his honesty. Written by a range of international experts, The Oxford Handbook of John Henry Newman shows how Newman remains important to the fields of education, history, literature, philosophy, and theology. Divided into four parts, part one grounds Newman's works in the places, cultures, and networks of relationships in which he lived. Part two looks at the thinkers who shaped his own thought, while the third part engages critically and appreciatively with themes in his writings. Part four examines how those themes have shaped conversations in the churches and the academy. This Handbook will serve as an important resource to critical and appreciative exploration of the person, writings, controversies, and legacy of Newman.
Download or read book Reclaiming Reason written by Adam Murrell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-01-26 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this compact, fluently written survey of logical fallacies, Adam Murrell provides myriad examples of ways we go about being illogical--how we deceive ourselves and others, how we think and argue in ways that are uncritical, disorganized, or irrelevant. From billboards to bumper stickers to radio to television, fallacious arguments are seemingly everywhere we look. Reclaiming Reason was designed to teach people how to counter this trend, how to reason with clarity, relevance, and purpose at a time when passions and emotion frequently override sound judgment. This concise handbook is essential for Christians as they study logic, the art of reasoning well--of learning to think God's thoughts after him. A book of remarkable sensibility, Reclaiming Reason is unassumingly relaxed, informal, and easily digestible.

Download or read book A Companion to Anglican Eucharistic Theology written by Brian Douglas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-11-25 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglican eucharistic theology varies between the different philosophical assumptions of realism and nominalism. Whereas realism links the signs of the Eucharist with what they signify in a real way, nominalism sees these signs as reminders only of past and completed transaction. This book begins by discussing the multifomity of the philosophical assumptions underlying Anglican eucharistic theology and goes on to present extensive case study material which exemplify these different assumptions from the Reformation to the Nineteenth century. By examining the multiformity of philosophical assumptions this book avoids the hermeneutic idealism of particular church parties and looks instead at the Anglican eucharistic tradition in a more critical manner.
