Book Canada Saskatchewan South River Basin Study

Download or read book Canada Saskatchewan South River Basin Study written by Study Board for the Canada-Saskatchewan South Saskatchewan River Basin Study and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Saskatchewan River is the most reliable supply of good quality water in the southern half of the province. However, Alberta also uses the resources of the river extensively for irrigation. Both Alberta and Saskatchewan had plans to develop more irrigated land and Saskatchewan also had development plans for recreational use, leading to concerns over the adequacy of the resource. The Canada-South Saskatchewan River Basin study was undertaken to provide information to guide water management and to help ensure that the water resources of the basin can meet the needs of existing and future users. This technical appendix to the report summarizes the water quality of the water resources of the Saskatchewan portion of the river basin. It identifies the water quality issues in the basin; evaluates existing water quality data bases; fills information gaps; establishes basin-specific water quality objectives for specific uses; and recommends a monitoring plan for the basin. Background information on the study and the water resources of the study area are also included.

Book The Water Transfer System in Southern Alberta

Download or read book The Water Transfer System in Southern Alberta written by Feinan Long and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade the South Saskatchewan River Basin (SSRB), the most water scarce watershed in southern Alberta, has attracted strong criticisms for implementing a water license transfer system. National advocacy organizations have raised the concern that it may set precedent for a larger liberalized water market. This study aims to assess this concern through 21 unstructured in-depth interviews with governmental, non-governmental, and the local irrigation stakeholders. The theories of policy paradigms and Ostrom's collective action model were used to assess the findings. It was found that a community-based policy paradigm, based on collective action to managing scarce water resources, was historically key in SSRB. Furthermore, the decline in both community-based and state-based paradigms over Alberta's water policy within the past two decades have allowed the market-based paradigm to become more influential. Hence this study predicts that a liberalized water market will likely develop in the near future in Alberta.
