Book excerpt: A variety of materials irradiation facilities exist in the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and are planned for the Advanced Neutron Source (ANS) reactor. In 1986 the HFIR Irradiation Facilities Improvement (HIFI) project began modifications to the HFIR which now permit the operation of two instrumented capsules in the target region and eight capsules of 46-mm OD in the RB region. Thus, it is now possible to perform instrumented irradiation experiments in the highest continuous flux of thermal neutrons available in the western world. The new RB facilities are now large enough to permit neutron spectral tailoring of experiments and the modified method of access to these facilities permit rotation of experiments thereby reducing fluence gradients in specimens. A summary of characteristics of irradiation facilities in HFIR is presented. The ANS is being designed to provide the highest thermal neutron flux for beam facilities in the world. Additional design goals include providing materials irradiation and transplutonium isotope production facilities as good, or better than, HFIR. The reference conceptual core design consists of two annular fuel elements positioned one above the other instead of concentrically as in the HFIR. A variety of materials irradiation facilities with unprecedented fluxes are being incorporated into the design of the ANS. These will include fast neutron irradiation facilities in the central hole of the upper fuel element, epithermal facilities surrounding the lower fuel element, and thermal facilities in the reflector tank. A summary of characteristics of irradiation facilities presently planned for the ANS is presented. 2 tabs.

Book excerpt: Following termination of the Advanced Neutron Source (ANS) Project, a program of upgrades to the Department of Energy's High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) was devised by a team of researchers and reactor operators and has been proposed to the department. HFIR is a multipurpose research reactor, commissioned in 1965, with missions in four nationally important areas: isotope production, especially transuranic isotopes; neutron scattering; neutron activation analysis; and irradiation testing of materials. For neutron scattering, there are two major enhancements and several smaller ones. The first is the installation of a small, hydrogen cold neutron source in one of the four existing beam tubes: because of the high reactor power, and the use of new design concepts developed for ANS, the cold source will be as bright as, or brighter than, the Institute Laue Langevin liquid deuterium vertical cold source, although space limitations mean that there will be far fewer cold beams and instruments at HFIR. This project is underway, and the cold source is expected to come on line following an extended shutdown in 1999 to replace the reactor's beryllium reflector. The second major change proposed would put five thermal neutron guides at an existing beam port and construct a new guide hall to accommodate instruments on these very intense beams.

Although not yet tested, the system is expected to have a thermal neutron flux of about 1.5 x 1014 cm−2 s−1. A delayed neutron counter is an integral part of the pneumatic tube, and all of the hardware is present to enable automated use of the counter. The system is operated with a Gould programmable controller that is programmed with an IBM personal computer. Automation of any mode of operation, including the delayed neutron counter, will only require a nominal amount of software development. Except for the lack of a hot cell, the irradiation facility has all of the advantageous features of an older pneumatic tube that has been in operation for 17 years. The design of the system and some applications and methods of operation are described.

Book excerpt: The computational ability to accurately predict the conditions in an experiment under irradiation is a valuable tool in the operation of a research reactor whose scientific mission includes isotope production, materials irradiation, and neutron activation analysis. Understanding of different governing physics is required to ascertain satisfactory conditions within the experiment: the neutron transport behavior throughout the reactor and the coupled behavior of heat transfer, structural mechanics and fluid flow. Computational methods and tools were developed for robust numerical analysis of experiment behavior at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), including fully-coupled thermo-mechanics in three plutonium-238 (238Pu) production targets. In addition, a new computational tool was developed that solves neutron transport using the discrete ordinates method on a finite element mesh and offers multiphysics coupling. The thermo-mechanical models of the 238Pu targets are solved using the COMSOL heat transfer and solid mechanics modules with irradiation behavior and thermophysical properties taken from measurements performed at ORNL. The experiments, placed in the permanent beryllium (PB) reflector, consist of neptunium dioxide/aluminum (NpO2/Al) pellets in Al containment, the model taking advantage of axisymmetry in two-dimensional R-Z cylindrical geometry. At times, extended analysis was needed for incomplete data sets and time schedules; however, the thermal-structure models ensured progression through three project phases of target qualification. The neutron transport equation was solved in COMSOL, using the discrete ordinates formulation in the weak form partial differential equation (PDE) interface. Validation studies were performed for the dimensions developed (one-, two- and three- dimensional Cartesian as well as two-dimensional R-Z cylindrical/axi-symmetric) and compared to external deterministic and stochastic codes. The method was then applied to a beginning-of-cycle (BOC) simplified HFIR core, with good comparison to other static solutions of the HFIR, and a time-dependent extension to this tool was created and exhibited for a benchmark problem. The research presented in this dissertation is the continued progress towards creating a comprehensive multiphysics methodology for studying the dynamic behavior of the HFIR core, and shows the capabilities of detailed space-time reactor physics studies and of multiphysics analyses for experiment qualification and safety analyses at a research reactor.

Book excerpt: An experiment to directly compare the effects of neutron fluence received at steady temperature on microstructure and mechanical properties of candidate fusion reactor structural materials to the effects of receiving 10% of the fluence at reduced temperature has been designed. The Varying Temperature Experiment is being fabricated for irradiation in a large Removable Beryllium (RB) position of the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). For this experiment, specimen temperatures are elevated and controlled whenever there is substantial neutron fluence to the specimens (reactor power> 10%). Half of the specimens are irradiated at two distinct temperatures, and half are irradiated at constant temperature. The capsule features to meet these requirements are described. The experiment will operate for ten reactor cycles beginning in early 1998. This project is a collaborative effort under the Japan-USA cooperative program (Jupiter Project).

Book excerpt: Development of silicon carbide (SiC) joints that retain adequate structural and functional properties in the anticipated service conditions is a critical milestone toward establishment of advanced SiC composite technology for the accident-tolerant light water reactor (LWR) fuels and core structures. Neutron irradiation is among the most critical factors that define the harsh service condition of LWR fuel during the normal operation. The overarching goal of the present joining and irradiation studies is to establish technologies for joining SiC-based materials for use as the LWR fuel cladding. The purpose of this work is to fabricate SiC joint specimens, characterize those joints in an unirradiated condition, and prepare rabbit capsules for neutron irradiation study on the fabricated specimens in the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). Torsional shear test specimens of chemically vapor-deposited SiC were prepared by seven different joining methods either at Oak Ridge National Laboratory or by industrial partners. The joint test specimens were characterized for shear strength and microstructures in an unirradiated condition. Rabbit irradiation capsules were designed and fabricated for neutron irradiation of these joint specimens at an LWR-relevant temperature. These rabbit capsules, already started irradiation in HFIR, are scheduled to complete irradiation to an LWR-relevant dose level in early 2015.
