Book Scholarship and Commitment

Download or read book Scholarship and Commitment written by Sunny Awhefeada and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2018-06-14 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Darah turned seventy on Wednesday November 22, 2017 and to celebrate his very productive career, his colleagues and many of those he has mentored thought it appropriate to mark his official exit from the university in a dignified way by commissioning for publication, in the now acceptable festschrift tradition, the highly compelling and outstanding collection of essays titled: Scholarship and Commitment: Essays in Honour of G.G. Darah. The book is a ground-breaking collection of essays; some are couched as tributes to the ebullient celebrant, there are others on more serious discourses in the areas of literary theories and criticism, language and linguistics, popular literature and politics, the African woman, identity and contemporary realities, oral literature, the news media and cultural studies. The essays, on their own, attest to the vivacity and liveliness as well as the encouraging state of health of publishing in the Nigerian academia, which in this collection alone, parades forty-two essays in different fields or discourses.

Book excerpt: Many descriptive grammars report the use of a linguistic pattern at the interface between discourse and syntax which is known generally as tail-head linkage. This volume takes an unprecedented look at this type of linkage across languages and shows that there exist three distinct variants, all subsumed under the hypernym bridging constructions. The chapters highlight the defining features of these constructions in the grammar and their functional properties in discourse. The volume reveals that: Bridging constructions consist of two clauses: a reference clause and a bridging clause. Across languages, bridging clauses can be subordinated clauses, reduced main clauses, or main clauses with continuation prosody.Bridging constructions have three variants: recapitulative linkage, summary linkage and mixed linkage. They differ in the formal makeup of the bridging clause. In discourse, the functions that bridging constructions fulfil depend on the text genres in which they appear and their position in the text.If a language uses more than one type of bridging construction, then each type has a distinct discourse function.Bridging constructions can be optional and purely stylistic or mandatory and serve a grammatical purpose.Although the difference between bridging constructions and clause repetition can be subtle, they maintain their own distinctive characteristics.

Book The Development of African Drama

Download or read book The Development of African Drama written by Michael Etherton and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, this book explores concepts such as ‘traditional performance’ and African theatre’. It analyses the links between drama and ritual, and drama and music and diagnoses the confusions in our thought. The reader is reminded that drama is never merely the printed word, but that its existence as literature and in performance is necessarily different. The analysis shows that literature tends to replace performance; and drama, removed from the popular domain, becomes elitist. The book’s richness lies in the constantly stimulating analysis of ‘art’ theatre, as exemplified in protest plays, in African adaptations and transpositions of such classical subjects as the Bacchae and Everyman, in plays on African history, on colonialism and neo-colonialism. The final chapters argue that the form of African drama needs to evolve as the content does.

After a subdued start to 2017, GDP growth accelerated to 1.1 percent in 2017, and the positive momentum continued in Q1:2018, although at a slightly reduced pace. The improved external outlook, together with the depreciation since mid-2017, are expected to energize the economy and lift GDP growth to 2.25 percent in 2018, before it gradually moderates to 1.75 percent over the medium term. Inflation is expected to increase to the upper half of the target band in 2018–19, and to subsequently revert to the mid-point.

Book African Cinema and Human Rights

Download or read book African Cinema and Human Rights written by Mette Hjort and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays and case studies exploring how filmmaking can play a role in promoting social and economic justice. Bringing theory and practice together, African Cinema and Human Rights argues that moving images have a significant role to play in advancing the causes of justice and fairness. The contributors to this volume identify three key ways in which film can achieve these goals: Documenting human rights abuses and thereby supporting the claims of victims and goals of truth and reconciliation within larger communities Legitimating, and consequently solidifying, an expanded scope for human rights Promoting the realization of social and economic right Including the voices of African scholars, scholar-filmmakers, African directors Jean-Marie Teno and Gaston Kaboré, and researchers whose work focuses on transnational cinema, this volume explores overall perspectives, and differences of perspective, pertaining to Africa, human rights, and human rights filmmaking alongside specific case studies of individual films and areas of human rights violations. With its interdisciplinary scope, attention to practitioners’ self-understandings, broad perspectives, and particular case studies, African Cinema and Human Rights is a foundational text that offers questions, reflections, and evidence that help us to consider film’s ideal role within the context of our ever-continuing struggle towards a more just global society.

Book The Isoko Ethnic Nationality

Download or read book The Isoko Ethnic Nationality written by Endurance O. Edafewotu and published by DENJOS. This book was released on 2019-11-09 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book, The Isoko Ethnic Nationality: In Time Perspective, is a concerted effort at interrogating the history and cultural practices of the mega Isoko clans with a concomitant foray into a concise discussion of the mini groups outside the main shores of Isoko. The approach of the author is novel and commendable. The author availed himself with existing literatures and interpreted same within the limit of new sources. The strong point of this work is the effort of the author in trying to weave the history of the Isoko people from the perspective of being one as epitomized by their intra-group relations. The view is that the Isoko were/are not a disparate ethnic nationality. The language of the author is acceptable and the font reader-friendly. The book is also illustrated with photographs. The book is recommended for scholars, administrators and all those truly committed to understanding who we are, where we are coming from, where we are, and what the future holds for us.
