Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron Ore Mines at Wabana, Newfoundland, of the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Co. Limited Bell Island's clifis rise perpendicularly for several hundred feet and in many cases they overhang, the incessant ravages of the sea hav ing worn away the base. Geologists assert that the island is a remnant of an immense syncline or trough of sediments deposited in Cambrian times. The general outline of Conception Bay was then the same as now but larger. It is supposed that it was the estuary of a large river that flowed down from the higher land to the west, and a series of ripple marks found on the island strengthens this belief. Enormous quanti ties of sediment were evidently carried into the estuary, and the bay began to fill up. There was a continual readjustment of pressure and eventually this whole portion of Newfoundland was gradually lifted above sea level. Book excerpt: For seventy-one years, iron ore was mined at Wabana, Bell Island: half the output was used in Canada; the other half was shipped around the world. When the mine shut down on June 30, 1966, it was Canada's oldest, continuously operating iron mine. The miners worked three miles under the ocean in Conception Bay, in what was, during its lifetime, the world's most extensive submarine iron mine. This is the story of the miners, of their workday, of the conditions in the mines, the story of the horses and the rats, of the fun that relieved the tedium and of the tragedies.

This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports and Testimonials Relating to the Iron Mines of Nova Scotia: With the Charter of "the Acadian Iron and Steel Company" The General Mining Association, under a royal charter grant ed to the late Duke of York, have been for upwards of twenty five years engaged in working the extensive mines of coal which occupy a large area of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton. By vir tue of this charter that association claims, for a term of years, all mines and minerals existing in or upon all the ungrant'ed lands of the Crown, and upon all granted lands where the mines and minerals were reserved to the Crown in the original grants. It happens, howeve'r, that certain extensive districts were granted to the early settlers, without any reservation of mines or mine rals, or with reservation only of the precious metals; and it is not a little remarkable that the most valuable deposits of iron ores, hitherto discovered, exist in localities to which the Duke's charter does not apply.
