Download or read book The Republic written by Charles Townshend and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping narrative of the most critical years in modern Ireland's history, from Charles Townshend The protracted, terrible fight for independence pitted the Irish against the British and the Irish against other Irish. It was both a physical battle of shocking violence against a regime increasingly seen as alien and unacceptable and an intellectual battle for a new sort of country. The damage done, the betrayals and grim compromises put the new nation into a state of trauma for at least a generation, but at a nearly unacceptable cost the struggle ended: a new republic was born. Charles Townshend's Easter 1916 opened up the astonishing events around the Rising for a new generation and in The Republic he deals, with the same unflinchingly wish to get to the truth behind the legend, with the most critical years in Ireland's history. There has been a great temptation to view these years through the prisms of martyrology and good-and-evil. The picture painted by Townshend is far more nuanced and sceptical - but also never loses sight of the ordinary forms of heroism performed by Irish men and women trapped in extraordinary times. Reviews: 'Electric ... [a] magisterial and essential book' Irish Times About the author: Charles Townshend is the author of the highly praised Easter 1916:The Irish Rebellion. His other books include The British Campaigns in Ireland, 1919-21 and When God Made Hell: The British Invasion of Mesopotamia and the Making of Iraq, 1914-21.

Download or read book Six Days of the Irish Republic written by Louis G. Redmond-Howard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Days of the Irish Republic: A Narrative and Critical Account of the Latest Phase of Irish Politics The following pages are an attempt at a simple narrative and criticism of what must appear the most inexplicable occurrence in Irish history. The climax of a century of arguments, futile only because of the proverbial dullness of the race to which they were addressed, the rising has lifted the Home Rule controversy at one stroke from the region of the village pump into the very midst of the counsels of Europe, for it was a challenge -of madmen, if you like - to the greatest Empire in the world, at the very moment of its gravest crisis, upon the most fundamental portion of its policy of interference with the affairs of the Continent, namely, England's claim to be the champion of small nationalities. Book History of the Sinn Fein Movement and the Irish Rebellion of 1916

Download or read book History of the Sinn Fein Movement and the Irish Rebellion of 1916 written by Francis P. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1917 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sinn Fein (Gaelic for "We Ourselves") was founded to promote the cultural revival and political independence of Ireland. History of the Sinn Fein Movement and the Irish Rebellion of 1916 is a detailed history of the movement, written by Francis P. Jones, a former member of the movement who had immigrated to the United States from Ireland. The book covers the period from the founding of Sinn Fein in Dublin in 1905 to the Easter Rising of April 1916. It deals with the economic, cultural, religious, and political aspects of Irish independence, as well as the twists and turns of British policy and the debates in Parliament over Home Rule. More than half of the book is a detailed account of the Easter Rising, based on documentary sources and the first-hand accounts of men involved in the fighting who had fled to the United States. The final chapters deal with the aftermath of the uprising, including the trial and execution of its leaders. A chapter on the "Women of the Nation" is by the author's wife, to whom the book is dedicated. The introduction is by John W. Goff (1848-1924), an immigrant from Ireland who was prominent in New York as a lawyer and judge. The appendix, "Ireland's Roll of Honor," contains a complete list of the names of the men killed in the fighting of April 1916 and of those sentenced to penal servitude, hard labor, or prison. The appendix concludes with details of the numbers of men deported and jailed without trial.

Book excerpt: A compelling and authoritative history of Irish nationalism from the award-winning and critically acclaimed author of Armed StruggleRichard English's brilliant new book, now available in paperback, is a compelling narrative history of Irish nationalism, in which events are not merely recounted but analysed. Full of rich detail, drawn from years of original research and also from the extensive specialist literature on the subject, it offers explanations of why Irish nationalists have believed and acted as they have, why their ideas and strategies have changed over time, and what effect Irish nationalism has had in shaping modern Ireland. It takes us from the Ulster Plantation to Home Rule, from the Famine of 1847 to the Hunger Strikes of the 1970s, from Parnell to Pearse, from Wolfe Tone to Gerry Adams, from the bitter struggle of the Civil War to the uneasy peace of the early twenty-first century. Is it imaginable that Ireland might - as some have suggested - be about to enter a post-nationalist period? Or will Irish nationalism remain a defining force on the island in future years? 'a courageous and successful attempt to synthesise the entire story between two covers for the neophyte and for the exhausted specialist alike' Tom Garvin, Irish Times
