Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Nationalities, Vol. 1: Who Are the Irish? Is the question one of Birth, or Blood 9 If birth, the son of Irish parents, when he chanced to be born while his mother was visiting England, never gained the coveted rights; while the equally fortuitous birth of another in Erin, though of English parentage, procured for him the privileges. If of blood, some awkward difficulties arise. A vast number of comfortable officials would have, on that principle, to retire in England were the Home Rule theory reduced to practice. Who, then, would cease to rule in Ireland? As genealogies are not preserved now, except among the landed aristocracy, if reputed Scotch and English were to be excluded from State affairs in Ireland, and the origin be decided by the question of names, nearly all the prominent Irish leaders would be immediately silenced, since they clearly belong to that hated race that conquered Ireland. Must Irish freedom be gained in blood, or will the comity of nations, led by the United States, shame a weakened England into putting into practice at home the principles which are so loudly trumpeted for the benefit of Germany? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wanted an Irish Univeristy: Also, Essays on University and Kindred Subjects The Bill was, at all events, before the House of Commons, and had been for some time. What was Irish Ireland doing? Should the Bill in question ever become an Act of Parliament, it was bound to have far-reaching effects, whether for good or ill, on the fortunes of the National language as well as of Irish nationality. The Gaelic League might have reasonably been expected to show marked signs of activity, but apparently such was by no means the fact. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Life and Character I hope I have achieved the object which I have had in view in writing this book, namely, to give a clear, full and faithful picture of Irish life and character, illustrated by anecdotes and by my own recollections and experiences during a twelve years' connection with Irish journalism. Hitherto no attempt has been made to do for Ireland what Dean Ramsay, in his ever popular Reminiscences of Scottish Life and Character, has done so well for Scotland. There is no complete collection of real, genuine Irish anecdotes which throw light on the character, customs, manners, and ways of thought of the Irish people. Book Irish Recollections Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Recollections I was born in the City of Cork, a city sur rounded by some of the most picturesque, poetic, and delightful regions to be found anywhere throughout the island. It is divided by the River Lee, and the Lee itself passes down through a district ornamented by beautiful, although not lofty hills and through exquisite plains, rich meadows, and delightful gardens, then streams through the city, and at last pours itself into the harbour of Queenstown, called in my early days the Cove of Cork, or more commonly by the abbreviated name of Cove, into the open sea. The home which I remember best in Cork was made up of a small house with a garden running down to the edge of the river, and when one had closed the gate behind him he seemed to be removed entirely from the commonplace working day world of business and traffic. He was stand ing at one end of a pretty garden with its little meadow, its fruit trees, and its abundant owers, and just beneath him owed the River Lee, there a narrow, rushing stream along whose opposite bank were meadows and trees, and in the farther background gently sloping hills. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and History of Irish Names of Places An addition of knowledge On Holy Ireland: - These were the first words of Gilla-na-Neeve O'Heeren, when he undertook to complete the description of Ireland, which his predecessor, John O'Dugan, had left unfinished; and they form a very suitable motto for the book 1 now offer to the notice of the public. For this book completes the work that was only half accomplished by the first series of "The Origin and History of Irish Names of Places." When I first took in hand to write a book on Irish Local Names, I thought I could grasp the whole subject in a single volume; and in the attempt to do so, I compressed as much matter into the First Series as any readable book of the size could conveniently hold. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Pedigrees, or the Origin and Stem of the Irish Nation Eminent historians have written the History of Ireland but it may be matter for surprise that the Irish Gene alogies were never published. This surprise, however, lessens when we reflect that the distracted state of Ireland in the bitter past, and the passions that have agitated her different sects and parties may have supplied motives for their suppression. Those passions are happily subsiding I therefore trust there is no irregularity in now unveiling the Irish Genealogies. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catholics and Citizenship, And, the Influence of Women in Catholic Ireland We are blessed to see the day for which others fought and prayed. Whatever may be said regarding certain re strictions in our Constitution, the broad fact remains, clear as the light of day, that our civil authorities, from the President to the. Humblest member of the guard, are our very own. We must, then, exorcise the old spirit which prompted us to despise, outwit, oppose, harass the representatives of civil authority. We have rulers now whom we cannot but regard as lawful, and we must learn to cultivate towards them that spirit of reverence and honour which the Apostle commands. They have heavy burdens to' bear, and should have our sympathy and cc operation as well as our respect. Helpful criticism is whole some; but in speaking or writing we should remember that we are dealing with men who wield the authority given them by God.
