Book Irish Genealogical Abstracts from the Londonderry Journal 1772 1784

Download or read book Irish Genealogical Abstracts from the Londonderry Journal 1772 1784 written by Donald M. Schlegel and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr. Schlegel has abstracted all notices of marriages, births, deaths, separations, estate settlements, and persons emigrating to North America which appeared in the "Londonderry Journal" between 1772 and 1784. While marriage notices predominate, researchers will also encounter references to births, deaths, and separations, estate settlements, and notices of persons emigrating to North America. Since many of the notices in the Journal make no mention of relationships but give useful clues to where people lived in Ireland, Mr. Schlegel has gathered those references into a separate appendix. All told, this fully indexed publication identifies some 2,000 Irish men and women. This book should be especially useful to those interested in tracing 18th-century Scotch-Irish ancestors, since the largest proportion of emigrants from Ireland prior to the American Revolution came from Northern Ireland, embarking as so many of them did from the port of Londonderry.

Book Missing Relatives and Lost Friends

Download or read book Missing Relatives and Lost Friends written by Robert W. Barnes and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers on the trail of elusive ancestors sometimes turn to 18th- and early 19th-century newspapers after exhausting the first tier of genealogical sources (i.e., census records, wills, deeds, marriages, etc.). Generally speaking, early newspapers are not indexed, so they require investigators to comb through them, looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. With his latest book, Robert Barnes has made one aspect of the aforementioned chore much easier. This remarkable book contains advertisements for missing relatives and lost friends from scores of newspapers published in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Virginia, as well as a few from New York and the District of Columbia. The newspaper issues begin in 1719 (when the "American Weekly Mercury" began publication in Philadelphia) and run into the early 1800s. The author's comprehensive bibliography, in the Introduction to the work, lists all the newspapers and other sources he examined in preparing the book. The volume references 1,325 notices that chronicle the appearance or disappearance of 1,566 persons.

Book Thomas Barclay 1728 1793

Download or read book Thomas Barclay 1728 1793 written by Priscilla H. Roberts and published by Associated University Presse. This book was released on 2008 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the first-ever biography of Thomas Barclay, the first American consul to serve the United States abroad and the man who, in 1786, successfully negotiated our first treaty with an Arab, African, or Muslim nation. It is the story of an Ulster-born immigrant building his fortune as a Philadelphia merchant in international trade, then losing it as he gives priority to his adopted country's fight to gain and build on independence. It tells how, after emigrating to Philadelphia in the 1760s, Barclay became a leading member of the Irish community, a successful merchant/ship owner, and political activist. This biography follows his move to France with his wife and three small children when the Continental Congress named him consul in 1781. There, before an American consular service existed, before Congress knew a consul from a consul general, Thomas Barclay did whatever was needed, wherever it was needed. To shipping, naval, and other tasks, Congress added an audit of American public expenditures in Europe since 1776. Then Jefferson and Adams added diplomacy in Barbary, where Barclay negotiated a rare tribute-free treaty of commerce and amity with the Sultan of Morocco. His personal relationships with Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson reveal as much about them as about him. On assignment for President Washington in 1793, he became the first American diplomat to die in a foreign country in the service of the United States."--BOOK JACKET.
