Book excerpt: The riveting true story of how Ireland came to be, told through eyewitness accounts from a thousand years of struggle “A fascinating mixture of mythology and actual historical events. . . . Lovers of Irish and medieval literature will relish this book.”—Booklist For the first thousand years of its history, Ireland was shaped by its wars. Beginning with the legends of ancient battles and warriors, Wars of the Irish Kings moves through a time when history and storytelling were equally prized, into the age when history was as much propaganda as fact. This remarkable book tells of tribal battles, foreign invasions, Viking raids, family feuds, wars between rival Irish kingdoms, and wars of rebellion against the English. While the battles formed the legends of the land, it was the people fighting the battles—Cuchulain, Finn MacCool, Brian Boru, Robert the Bruce, Elizabeth I, and Hugh O’Donnell—who shaped the destiny and identity of the Irish nation. Brought together for the first time in one volume, Wars of the Irish Kings is a surprisingly immediate and stunning portrait of an all-but-forgotten time that forged the Ireland of today.

Book The Williamite Wars in Ireland

Download or read book The Williamite Wars in Ireland written by John Childs and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2007-08-20 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The comprehensive defeat of the Jacobite Irish in the Williamite conflict, a component within the pan-European Nine Years' War, prevented the exiled James II from regaining his English throne, ended realistic prospects of a Stuart restoration and partially secured the new regime of King William III and Queen Mary created by the Glorious Revolution. The principal events - the Siege of Londonderry, the Battles of the Boyne and Aughrim, and the two Sieges and Treaty of Limerick - have subsequently become totems around which opposing constructions of Irish history have been erected. Childs argues that the struggle was typical of the late-seventeenth century, principally decided by economic resources and attrition in which the 'small war' comprising patrols, raids, occupation of captured regions by small garrisons, police actions against irregulars and attacks on supply lines was more significant in determining the outcome than the set-piece battles and sieges.

Excerpt: The Irish War of Independence (Irish: , ) Anglo-Irish War, or Tan War was a guerrilla war mounted by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) against the British government and its forces in Ireland. It began in January 1919, following the Irish Republic's declaration of independence. Both sides agreed to a ceasefire (or "truce") in July 1921. The post-ceasefire talks led to the December 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty. This treaty ended British rule in most of Ireland and, after a ten-month transitional period overseen by a provisional government, the Irish Free State was established. However, six northern counties remained within the United Kingdom as Northern Ireland, with its own devolved parliament. After the ceasefire, political and sectarian violence (between republicans and loyalists, and between Irish Catholics and...

Book excerpt: The Battle of Britain, regarded by historians as one of the greatest air battles in the history of warfare, was an early turning point in the Second World War. In the summer of 1940, the German army had, with astonishing speed, mercilessly swept aside all before them and were perched on the northern coastline of France. Outright victory over all of Europe was impeded only by the expanse of the English Channel. The supremely confident, yet-to-be defeated Luftwaffe (German Air Force) were eager for continued action, to claim air superiority and victory over an outnumbered RAF and clear the skies for the amphibious invasions of Britain and Ireland. It was vital that the RAF deny them, and so a ferocious and highly strategic aerial battle began that was to rage for more than three months. Among those in the RAF’s Spitfire and Hurricane fighter squadrons were Irishmen, who were in the thick of the aerial exchanges, daring ‘dog-fights’, and intrepid interceptions of German bombers. A Bloody Summer: The Irish at the Battle of Britain for the first time tells the true and full story of their heretofore underestimated involvement in this epic aerial encounter.

Book Essays from The Irish Sword Ireland and the Crusades

Download or read book Essays from The Irish Sword Ireland and the Crusades written by Military History Society of Ireland and published by Essays from the Irish Sword. This book was released on 2006 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of a projected two-volume survey of Irish military history, this is a facsimile version of the original articles from the Middle Ages to the present day. The articles were first published in the Irish Sword, the journal of the Military History Society of Ireland. The Society was founded in 1949 with the aim of promoting the study of Irish military history, defined as the history of warfare in Ireland and of Irishmen in war. Among the essays on medieval warfare are an account of the part played by Irishmen in the Crusades and an analysis of the military history of the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are particularly well represented as warfare was frequent in that period, including the Tudor re-conquest, the rebellion of 1641 and subsequent overflow of the English Civil War into Ireland, and the Williamite war of 1689-91. Writers such as Cyril Falls on Hugh O'Neill, G A Hayes-McCoy on The Army of Ulster 1593-1603 and J G Simms on Cromwell at Drogheda feature in this section. In the part covering the eighteenth century the military exploits of Irish soldiers in foreign armies are examined by Micheline Kerney-Walsh, while Charles Petrie describes the position of Ireland in international strategic thinking in his Ireland in Spanish and French Strategy, 1558-1815. There are two papers on the rebellion of 1798: Richard Hayes The Battle of Castlebar 1798 and Paul Kerrigan's Weapons and Tactics of 1798.
