Download or read book Woman and Nature written by Susan Griffin and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this famously provocative cornerstone of feminist literature, Susan Griffin explores the identification of women with the earth—both as sustenance for humanity and as victim of male rage. Starting from Plato's fateful division of the world into spirit and matter, her analysis of how patriarchal Western philosophy and religion have used language and science to bolster their power over both women and nature is brilliant and persuasive, coming alive in poetic prose. Griffin draws on an astonishing range of sources—from timbering manuals to medical texts to Scripture and classical literature—in showing how destructive has been the impulse to disembody the human soul, and how the long separated might once more be rejoined. Poet Adrienne Rich calls Woman and Nature "perhaps the most extraordinary nonfiction work to have merged from the matrix of contemporary female consciousness—a fusion of patriarchal science, ecology, female history and feminism, written by a poet who has created a new form for her vision. ...The book has the impact of a great film or a fresco; yet it is intimately personal, touching to the quick of woman's experience."

This title, written by "Rey Anthony," attracted the attention of a Robert F. Kennedy, in large part, we suspect, because of its pioneering feminist qualities, and the way its author championed the clitoris as the primary means through which most woman achieve orgasm, as opposed to the sex contained within. Publisher Ralph Ginzburg got six months.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At once practical and creative, this book was feminism's Whole Earth Catalog Originally published in 1973, The New Woman's Survival Catalog is a seminal survey of the second-wave feminist effort across the US. Edited by Kirsten Grimstad and Susan Rennie in just five months, The New Woman's Survival Catalog makes a nod to Stewart Brand's influential Whole Earth Catalog, mapping a vast network of feminist alternative cultural activity in the 1970s. Grimstad and Rennie set out on a two-month road trip in the summer of 1973, meeting and interviewing a range of organizations and individuals, and gathering vital information on everything from arts groups to bookstores and independent presses, health, parenting and rape crisis centers and educational, legal and financial resources. "These projects express a rejection of the values of existing institutional structures," Grimstad and Rennie wrote, "and, unlike the hip male counterculture, represent an active attempt to reshape culture through changing values and consciousness." Arranged in themed sections on art, communications, work and money, child care, self-help, self-defense and activism, The New Woman's Survival Catalog provides crucial insight into feminist initiatives and activism nationwide during the Women's Movement. It includes a "Making the Book" section that details the publication's production. Kirsten Grimstad and Susan Rennie are the coeditors of The New Woman's Survival Catalog and The New Woman's Survival Sourcebook (1975). They went on to cofound Chrysalis: A Magazine of Women's Culture, published out of the Woman's Building in downtown Los Angeles from 1977 to 1981. Grimstad is currently Co-Chair of Undergraduate Studies at Antioch University, Los Angeles; she is the author of The Modern Revival of Gnosticism and Thomas Mann's Doktor Faustus (2002). Rennie taught social sciences at Union Institute & University in Cincinnati, worked as a women's health activist and now lives in Venice, California.

Download or read book Country Commune Cooking written by Lucy Horton and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-22 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating culinary odyssey through the kitchens of America's flourishing country communes, here is an original and vastly entertaining cookbook-plus-"an organic cookbook with lapses''that combines more than 150 superb and distinctly different recipes with a wealth of communal lore encompassing cameo sketches of hip cooks from Vermont to California and informal, informative raps on everything from growing and preserving your own vegetables to hosting a communal feast.Gathered from forty-three communes in twelve states and Canada and exotically named for their exuberant young inventors or the spirit in which they were created (Total Loss Spinach Blintzes, T.A.'s Potato Volcano, Omelet Outrageous), the recipes range from variations on familiar American staples like pizza and cheeseburgers and traditional ethnic concoctions to wholly unique creations that reflect the astonishing variety of tastes and dietary theories that Lucy Horton discovered on her year-long quest through the often primitive but always prodigiously productive kitchens of country communes. She discovered, too, that group cooking (not group sex) is the central fact and preoccupation of communal life. A vital and formative part of Consciousness III is Food Consciousness, and it is from the awakening palates and enthusiastic experiments with organic foods -wholesome natural grains, a cornucopia of lovingly tended fruits and vegetables, exotic herbs and aromatic spices-of young people cooking on wood-burning stoves that Lucy has gleaned a treasury of recipes as innovative as they are delicious.Note: This is a 2019 reprint of the original 1972 edition with an updated Afterword by both the author and illustrator.
