Book Ireland and the European Union

Download or read book Ireland and the European Union written by Michael Holmes and published by . This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how Ireland's relationship with the EU was affected by a succession of crises; the financial crisis, the migration crisis and the Brexit crisis, in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The various crises were not of equal significance on the island of Ireland. The financial crisis was a huge issue for the Republic but not Northern Ireland; Brexit had a major impact in both polities; the migration and populism issues were less controversial; and foreign policy challenges had a minimal impact. The book provides a summary of the main features of each of the main crises to be considered, from both the EU and the Irish perspective. It also explores a number of policy areas which are central to the understanding of each of the crises and the impact each crisis has had for Ireland. Chapters examine issues such as security, migration and taxation as well as protest politics, political parties, the media, public opinion and the economic impact of each of these crises on Ireland's relationship with the EU. The book is also the first of its kind to provide a comprehensive analysis on British-Irish relations in the context of Brexit assessing in particular the Withdrawal Agreement and Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland, the devolution settlement and the 1998 Agreement as well as the European dimension to Northern Ireland's peace process. Leading academics from Ireland, the UK and the EU have combined to provide a thought-provoking book which will be invaluable to anyone interested in contemporary Irish politics and economics. Analysts of the EU, particularly those interested on the impact of the financial crisis, populism and Brexit on Ireland's relationship with the EU will also find it essential reading.

Book A Union Forever

  • Author : David Sim
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2013-12-15

Download or read book A Union Forever written by David Sim and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-nineteenth century the Irish question—the governance of the island of Ireland—demanded attention on both sides of the Atlantic. In A Union Forever, David Sim examines how Irish nationalists and their American sympathizers attempted to convince legislators and statesmen to use the burgeoning global influence of the United States to achieve Irish independence. Simultaneously, he tracks how American politicians used the Irish question as means of furthering their own diplomatic and political ends. Combining an innovative transnational methodology with attention to the complexities of American statecraft, Sim rewrites the diplomatic history of this neglected topic. He considers the impact that nonstate actors had on formal affairs between the United States and Britain, finding that not only did Irish nationalists fail to involve the United States in their cause but actually fostered an Anglo-American rapprochement in the final third of the nineteenth century. Their failures led them to seek out new means of promoting Irish self-determination, including an altogether more radical, revolutionary strategy that would alter the course of Irish and British history over the next century.

Book excerpt: They came from the poorest parts of Ireland and Italy, and met as rivals on the sidewalks of New York. In the nineteenth century and for long after, the Irish and Italians fought in the Catholic Church, on the waterfront, at construction sites, and in the streets. Then they made peace through romance, marrying each other on a large scale in the years after World War II. An Unlikely Union unfolds the dramatic story of how two of America's largest ethnic groups learned to love and laugh with each other in the wake of decades of animosity. The vibrant cast of characters features saints such as

Book Ireland

  • Author : Oliver MacDonagh
  • Publisher : London : G. Allen & Unwin

  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book Ireland written by Oliver MacDonagh and published by London : G. Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 1977 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oliver MacDonagh described the first version of Ireland: The Union and its Aftermath, published in 1968, as 'a very small book with very large themes'. The book rapidly reached the status of a classic and remains a thought-provoking survey of the history of Ireland from the Act of Union of 1800 until modern times. MacDonagh regarded the Act of Union as the most important single factor in shaping Ireland as a nation in the modern world. Although subordination to Britain had influenced Irish development before 1800, it took a rapidly different form under the Act of Union: 'The experience of being assimilated by, and resisting assimilation into, a powerful and alien empire -- perhaps the master-culture of the nineteenth century -- was truly traumatic.' Book Ireland Since the Union

Download or read book Ireland Since the Union written by Justin H. McCarthy and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland Since the Union: Sketches of Irish History, From 1798 to 1886 Home Rule is the question of the hour. Every one is talking of it, thinking about it, writing upon it. The newspapers daily devote leading articles to the consideration of every phase of the subject, couched in the most contrasting terms of approval and disapproval. Most of them allot a portion of their columns to the reception of outside opinion of the most varied kind upon the problem. Statesmen of every school seem eager to express their views, on the platform and in print, upon the question whether Ireland is entitled to any form of self-government or not. Mr. Morley, Mr. Labouchere, Mr. Stead, and others write and speak upon the subject with the same cool, keen good sense, and the same steadfast adhesion to Radical principles, which make them the true representatives of a Radical Party in and outside the House of Commons. The so-called 'Unionist, ' on the other hand, fumes and flares. He is consumed by fiery indignation. He is all for an appeal to the god of battles. The good old principle of might meaning right animates and sustains him, and his attitude towards the Irish people appears to be the old-fashioned 'Squelch them, by God!' one. Book Acts of Union and Disunion

Download or read book Acts of Union and Disunion written by Linda Colley and published by Profile Books. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Kingdom; Great Britain; the British Isles; the Home Nations: such a wealth of different names implies uncertainty and contention - and an ability to invent and adjust. In a year that sees a Scottish referendum on independence, Linda Colley analyses some of the forces that have unified Britain in the past. She examines the mythology of Britishness, and how far - and why - it has faded. She discusses the Acts of Union with Wales, Scotland and Ireland, and their limitations, while scrutinizing England's own fractures. And she demonstrates how the UK has been shaped by movement: of British people to other countries and continents, and of people, ideas and influences arriving from elsewhere. As acts of union and disunion again become increasingly relevant to our daily lives and politics, Colley considers how - if at all - the pieces might be put together anew, and what this might mean. Based on a 15-part BBC Radio 4 series.
