Book Bitter Freedom Ireland in a Revolutionary World

Download or read book Bitter Freedom Ireland in a Revolutionary World written by Maurice Walsh and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Irish Times Best Book of the Year Longlisted for the Bread and Roses Award for Radical Publishing "Sets Ireland's post-1916 history in its global and human context, to brilliant effect." —Neil Hegarty, Irish Times Books of the Year 2015 The Irish Revolution has long been mythologized in American culture but seldom understood. Too often, the story of Irish independence and its grinding aftermath in the early part of the twentieth century has been told only within a parochial Anglo-Irish context. Now, in the critically acclaimed Bitter Freedom, Maurice Walsh, with "a novelist's eye for detailing lives in extremis" (Feargal Keane, Prospect), places revolutionary Ireland within the panorama of nationalist movements born out of World War I. Beginning with the Easter Rising of 1916, Bitter Freedom follows through from the War of Independence to the end of the post-partition civil war in 1924. Walsh renders a history of insurrection, treaty, partition, and civil war in a way that is both compelling and original. Breaking out this history from reductionist, uplifting narratives shrouded in misguided sentiment and romantic falsification, the author provides a gritty, blow-by-blow account of the conflict, from ambushes of soldiers and the swaggering brutality of the Black and Tan militias to city streets raked by sniper fire, police assassinations, and their terrible reprisals; Bitter Freedom provides a kaleidoscopic portrait of the human face of the conflict. Walsh also weaves surprising threads into the story of Irish independence such as jazz, American movies, and psychoanalysis, examining the broader cultural environment of emerging modernity in the early twentieth century, and he shows how Irish nationalism was shaped by a world brimming with revolutionary potential defined by the twin poles of Woodrow Wilson in America and Vladimir Lenin in Russia. In this “invigorating account” (Spectator), Walsh demonstrates how this national revolution, which captured worldwide attention from India to Argentina, was itself profoundly shaped by international events. Bitter Freedom is "the most vivid and dramatic account of this epoch to date" (Literary Review).

Book excerpt: Tom Barry chronicles the action-packed life of the Commander of the Third West Cork Flying Column and one of the great architects of modern guerrilla warfare in Ireland's fight for freedom. 'The false surrender' controversy, during the decisive Kilmichael ambush, is brought into sharp focus in this book, as is the controversy regarding sectarianism during the 1920-22 period. The story of Tom Barry's life, peppered by his battles with the State and Church, and his constant endeavours to obtain an All Ireland Republic, makes him a unique and important figure in Irish history. In 1949, when he addressed huge crowds in New York, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Boston, his voice rang out: 'My one aim is to unite the Irish people - one race ... The Border will not fade away, or the Partition will not be ended until such time as the united strength is used in a supreme effort to get rid of it.' Tom Barry details his involvement on the fringes of the Treaty negotiations; his Republican activities during the Civil War; his engagement in the cease-fire/dump-arms deal of 1923; his term as the IRA's Chief-of-Staff and his participation in IRA conflicts in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950, right up to his death in 1980. With an extensive body of primary source material, including Tom Barry's papers, this action-packed biography will appeal equally to both the general reader and to students of Irish history. -- book back cover.

Book Protecting the right to freedom of expression under the European Convention on Human Rights

Download or read book Protecting the right to freedom of expression under the European Convention on Human Rights written by Bychawska-Siniarska, Dominika and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European Convention on Human Rights – Article 10 – Freedom of expression 1. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers. This article shall not prevent States from requiring the licensing of broadcasting, television or cinema enterprises. 2. The exercise of these freedoms, since it carries with it duties and responsibilities, may be subject to such formalities, conditions, restrictions or penalties as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society, in the interests of national security, territorial integrity or public safety, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, for the protection of the reputation or rights of others, for preventing the disclosure of information received in confidence, or for maintaining the authority and impartiality of the judiciary. In the context of an effective democracy and respect for human rights mentioned in the Preamble to the European Convention on Human Rights, freedom of expression is not only important in its own right, but it also plays a central part in the protection of other rights under the Convention. Without a broad guarantee of the right to freedom of expression protected by independent and impartial courts, there is no free country, there is no democracy. This general proposition is undeniable. This handbook is a practical tool for legal professionals from Council of Europe member states who wish to strengthen their skills in applying the European Convention on Human Rights and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights in their daily work.

Book excerpt: MAC IRELAND IS DESTINED TO BECOME YOUR FAVORITE IRISH HERO An intriguing, gripping and authentic Irish novel that eschews Irish stereotypes and Hollywood malarkey.Mac Ireland is the real deal - an authentic Irish rebel in the tradition of The Fenians and the men of the 1916 Easter Rising.Mac Ireland as a young idealistic Irish patriot sets out in the 1970s to drive England out of Ireland but quickly realizes he has to first drive British agents out of the IRA.The action-packed plot is brilliantly creative, with a theme that has not been touched on before: Mac Ireland hunts down British agents inside the IRA with the help of a Northern Ireland Protestant detective, whose family member is killed by agents of The Crown, and a Southern Irish detective, who is outraged by how the Dublin Government has sold out to the British Government.Mac Ireland is a man of action but also unexpectedly a man of learning. Book Defying the IRA

  • Author : Brian Hughes (Historian)
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book Defying the IRA written by Brian Hughes (Historian) and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the grass-roots relationship between the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the civilian population during the Irish Revolution. It is primarily concerned with the attempts of the militant revolutionaries to discourage, stifle, and punish dissent among the local populations in which they operated, and the actions or inactions by which dissent was expressed or implied. Focusing on the period of guerilla war against British rule from c. 1917 to 1922, it uncovers the acts of 'everyday' violence, threat, and harm that characterized much of the revolutionary activity of this period. Moving away from the ambushes and assassinations that have dominated much of the discourse on the revolution, the book explores low-level violent and non-violent agitation in the Irish town or parish. The opening chapter treats the IRA's challenge to the British state through the campaign against servants of the Crown - policemen, magistrates, civil servants, and others - and IRA participation in local government and the republican counter-state. The book then explores the nature of civilian defiance and IRA punishment in communities across the island before turning its attention specifically to the year that followed the 'Truce' of July 1921. This study argues that civilians rarely operated at either extreme of a spectrum of support but, rather, in a large and fluid middle ground. Behaviour was rooted in local circumstances, and influenced by local fears, suspicions, and rivalries. IRA punishment was similarly dictated by community conditions and usually suited to the nature of the perceived defiance. Overall, violence and intimidation in Ireland was persistent, but, by some contemporary standards, relatively restrained.
